I have captured a goblin in a cage, and want to free him. How do I do this? I cannot find any help on the wiki, for what it tells me to do won't work.

Build the cage he's in, attach a lever to the cage, pull the lever.

The cage will be destroyed and the mechanism used to link the cage will be ejected.

So, don't free him if he's in a Masterpiece cage.

The cage won't be destroyed, it will just be deconstructed.  Just means it won't be fixed to that position anymore.  No worries.

OH! Thats what I did wrong, I didn't build the cage, it was just sitting in the stockpile.

Well, you could just designate a pit and chuck the goblin into it. From there, either open a door and let it go, or stab it to death and REALLY free it.

You could capture a whole goblin siege, strip them of their gear, set up their cages on the edge of the map, and let them go.

Will they come back?

Will they come back equally naked?

Will they bring more iron when they come back?

Hey, I like this idea! Didn't I hear that goblin ranks get depleted - well, unless dwarf ranks do, I guess - which keeps them from attacking until the young ones grow up? If you strip the goblin prisoners and then release them, wouldn't that keep them coming?

I pretty much doubt it that the exact same goblins will come back. Right now sieges are "generated". Later on, once Toady will finish the Army Arc, sieges will be realistic. IE Civilizations will create armies, and send those to attack you. Maybe after that point, if XY creature will flee, there will be a nice chance that you will met with that creature later on.

Or just encourage their armies to give up, instead of fighting to the death.
