He pits them from the top. Nice trap by the way.

Wardogs are always handy to keep around. Just don't get attached to any of them as they usually are something along the lines of a one use missile where they either die or get seriously wounded after attacking one thing (that isn't a kobold or a groundhog).

I use them to saturate my defense so that no dwarf is unprotected at any time. I also have a mod with war spiders, which are weaker than dogs, but have webbing to trap creatures. Really cool when a spider webs a goblin, then the dogs rip it to shreds.

The dogs are definitely the anti-kobold, though.

Hell, I've had kittens kill kobolds after a short battle, war dogs tear out their throats outright.

That's what I thought. I suppose that means you have to deactivate your other dump zones when you dump dogs, or do dwarves automatically pick the dump zone the closest to the cage?

You don't use a dump zone, you use a pit zone.  Then, while selecting the pit (i), you can use (P) to decide what animals to throw in there.  It's kinda like cages in that aspect.

lmao  that's just a little whoopsie, huh?  I've got Mengosed the WarDog chained just inside the double doors waiting for the next sorry bugger to stick his head through.  wish I could craft some leatherarmor for him.  metal would realistically weigh him down too much, but I ca't see too much of a problem with leather

That's actually a really awesome idea that is definitely true to life. I look forward to a time (which I'm sure is coming) when animal equipment is added in and we can have armor and collars (that menace with spikes!) for war dogs, halters, bridles and saddles for horses, nose rings and bells for bovines...and so on and so forth.

My dwarves would never ride horses anyway.

Onward, my mighty muskoxen!  Charge!

Personally, I think the dwarves will use the war dogs as mounts.

No, they use mountain goats...
Well, maybe tamed goblins

Unfortunately, you can't tell which animals are already in a pit and which are still available for pitting, right? I have that problem with my livestock pits. I'd really like to pit just the ones that get loose, but I can't tell which ones are which from the pit screen.

You can't even tell which sex they are, if you'd like to use the males for guard dogs and the females - and one male - for breeding.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Now if i could only catch a female in my current fortress, then we'd be in business.

This quote out of context is hilarious.

Some one post the bear cavalry meme please.  :D

Also, i'm pretty sure any sort of dwarf cavalry would include giant eagles, giant  bats, giant rats, etc.
