X gives in to pain
« on: July 17, 2008, 03:01:07 pm »

Recently I've been finding alot of people and megabeasts just lying on the ground, either outside their cave or somewhere behind a house, giving into pain and going in and out of consciousness for no apparent reason. What's up with that? Dying of old age? No signs of combat, they seem fine except for this.

These are creatures that lost or damaged limbs in worldgen. That's why they are in pain.

During worldgen, entities don't reconize pain. Their limbs loped off? No problem, they take out a dragon.

However, once you can influence the world, they reconize pain. You are literally the bringer of pain. Suddenly, people get knocked out from agony. Kobolds are mortals, and Elves are pansies, despite how many things they ate.

From what I'm able to gather, it has a lot to do with the fact that injuries resulting in removed body parts never get better, so the associated pain from said injury never lessens either. You'd figure an eye you lost three years ago would stop feeling exactly the same as the moment it got gored out by a foul blendec, but no.
Not sure if that's exactly the case, but it sounds right, so I'm saying it. HAR!

Sacrifice.

A game that transcends the boundaries of common gaming, and rises up as a god among mere mortals.

And as for wounds/pain,  I like to think that severe injury causes a peculiar form of memory loss.  The creature forgets that they have lost the limb/organ, and goes about its life as if nothing happened.

Then, in a sudden realization, the mental barriers that were blocking out the truth fall down and the creature cries out in pain "OW MY EYE!", and promptly faints from having their eye ripped out of their skull.

Even if it did happen three years ago.

Weren't those the mutants?
Tragically, grubs/infectious polyps aren't available items, but you can be damn well sure that the instant they and guts become actual items, they will be the mainstay of my arsenal of cheese.

The game also does not check for body structure when doing damage. For example, my MA mod has all humanoid bodies have a neck bodypart between the upper body and the head. During worldgen, one crossbowman had his neck torn off. Unabated, he still scored some kills. When I came to visit him in a town, his head promptly fell off and he bled to death.

Well, that had to be an awkward conversation.

Hopefully a future version of DF will fix this. Someone who loses a limb but does not die as a result of the injury does recover eventually, that's why prosthetic limbs exist.

Yes, but are you seriously suggesting a prosthetic neck? Because that would be awesome.

I can't wait for future version of Dwarf Fortress to have glass eyes...
