Prehistoria
« on: November 12, 2007, 09:22:00 pm »

I'll be updating my 'prehistoric' critters to the new version slowly (as my fortresses fall, basically, since I can't add new creatures or make major changes to them mid-fortress). I've got my stegosaurs, ankylosaurs, t-rexes, triceratopses, and pterodactyls working to a minimal degree in my current game (ie, they appear and their by-products are tradable for), although they all need a lot of work to update them fully and they were never really balanced well.

I'll probably also add in prehistoric vermin, plants, and sea creatures as I get time and inspiration. Most, if not all, of the additions would be for savage areas only. I'm going to keep this mod fairly focused, if at all possible.

Suggestions for additions are welcome.

Nice, especially if you can tame them. War Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptors sound good to me!

War training is one of the things I'm looking at doing - although probably not for the really big guys. War T-rexes might be a bit excessive.

Make them dungeon master tameable. Also, I suggest you add some of the small buggers dinosaurs, like verociraptors and such. Maybe some vegetarians too?   :D And make other dinobirds, think of some   :D

I always like the (googles spelling)Archaeopteryx. It could be a savage version of the chicken? And add some sea monsters like plesiosaurs, and liplourodons?

In DF, there is no such thing a excessive when it comes to violence.

Utahraptors are approximately as large as the Jurassic Park raptors. Admittedly, JP calls them velociraptors (which were indeed fairly small), but saying that all raptors are tiny is just plain false.

"Raptor" is short for velociraptor, not the name of the general type of dinosaurs. I am aware of other bigger dromaeosauridae but everybody seems only intent on adding the most overhyped variety.

Not really, no. It's short for any kind of raptor, of which there are several. To wit: Wikipedia disambiguation for Raptor, which says "An informal term to refer to certain dinosaurs, most notably the Dromaeosauridae, including the Velociraptor, Deinonychus, Utahraptor and some other theropods such as the Oviraptor and the Gigantoraptor".

Not to mention that Raptor is also a generic term for any bird of prey.

Aren't there veachels called Raptors to?

I really agree that if Toady added 9 kinds of gibbons we should include ALL kinds of unknown and awesome creatures in a prehistoric mod, not just the boring standard hyped ones like velociraptors, I expect trilobites (of course they wouldn't be called simply trilobites, but have dosins of varieties like a dwarven translation of some name in this list) to be somewhat like carp, and have bode definitions including cephalon, thorax and pygidium.

(the trilobites is just an example, I'm no special trilobite expert, just looked it up on wikipedia, and found an extremely long and fun list of them)

And don't forget the tricordites and ginkos (the trees) and all the other neat creaturs!

The giant crocodilians that snacked on dinos, like Sarcosuchus, and their earlier amphibian analogs would be cool. Some pliosaurs might have gotten a bit bigger, but they also didn't run out of the water and chase you  :)
