Godbound: Forsaken Shore (5/5)
« on: October 10, 2024, 09:23:53 pm »

Ancalia is a cursed place. The Uncreated, demons from the darkness outside the world, crawl over the land, spreading destruction wherever they go. The dead also walk, brought to horrific unlife by a terrible plague. Survivors huddle where they can, fighting for every day of survival. Reavers pillage the coast, barren of the defenses that once kept them at bay.

Ancalia has been dead for five years. The other nations have turned their gaze and hope that they are not next. Woe to those who step foot on the shores of Ancalia, for land is tainted by plague and worse.

You were on a ship, bound to a distant port, when the storm came. It was violent and sudden, and before you knew it the ship was breaking around you. You were in the water, and you knew no more.

A dragon roars, and breaks.

You awake on the shore of a beach, dark clouds in the sky. Despite being water-logged and half drowned, you feel a strange vitality coursing through you. Words, echos of celestial power and might, echo through your soul. A power enough to change a kingdom’s, a world’s, fate.

You are Godbound.

What that means is for you to determine.

This game will run based on the RPG Godbound, made by Kevin Crawford and the rules can be found for free over on Drivethrurpg (and probably other stores). A guide to character creation can be found there.

This is going to be a Sandbox game, driven by the player’s goals. While there will be threats and quests for you to go on, ideally most adventures will be driven by the PC’s. So when designing a potential character, give them goals and ideals that they would strive for, even if it is unrealistic or impossible. You are Godbound, anything can be achieved given enough time and power.

This game will mostly run on the forum, though combat may be resolved through posts on discord to go a little faster. So Discord is necessary for this game:

Let me know if you have any questions, or if I forgot anything. I’ll look for around ~6 characters.

Having to go back and forth across the sheet always leaves me worried I missed something, but I don't think I did.

I slightly changed the third fact so he's not dealing with the responsibility for losing a boatload of refugees, just for losing his crew.
I can change it back if you like.

Beach Day

The chill wind blew over the beach, home to scattered wreckage from the ship destroyed by the storm. Dark clouds still cover the sky, remnants of the tempest.

Nahaniel, a fisherman from a nearby coastal village, carefully sorted through a pile of debris. Times were desperate, and if there was anything of value Nahaniel would find it. Maybe it would buy another day of survival for his family.

Nahaniel froze as he saw movement, as wreckage shifted around and five figures stumbled to their feet.
Nearest was a young thin man, his hair a frosty white. Despite being tossed by waves and thrown onto a sandy beach, not a hair appears out of place and his clothes remain impossibly immaculate. Tales of the fae Cousins flashed through his mind, of their beauty and their trickery.

Another rose, a wealthy nobleman with skin the color of ash. Nahaniel flinched as he saw his ruby red eyes. Next to him was a man devoid of all pigment, and his eyes a glittering purple.

Further along the beach rose a tall Ancalian. He, thankfully, did not appear to be a fae. And next to him was an old man, clad in gray. They stood around a man, dressed in a garishly green and red outfit, who began to retch loudly, trying to clear any of the seawater he swallowed.

Nahaniel backed away slowly. Breen, his companion, was already by the boat and pointing further inland. Perhaps drawn by the wreckage, a shambling horde of the dead began to emerge from the trees. A few of them looked up at the sound of the other man's hacking, and began to shuffle towards the beach.

Nahaniel let out a quiet curse and looked at the strangers on the beach. A part of him wanted to warn them and offer a spot in the boat, but they were so strange. If they were fae, they should be able to handle themselves. And if not, they would buy time for them to escape.

He scrambled towards his fishing boat, under the sight of the godbound as the moans of the dead rose from the woods further inland.

Godbound, welcome! You are on a beach, there are a few undead shuffling towards you, but these guys aren't moving fast yet so you have some time. There are a couple fishermen discreetly trying to slip away on their boat, and another poor survivor who is trying to hack some seawater out of his lungs.

What do you do?

Vax uses the death word to command as many undead as he can, telling them to stop approaching.  He then find one of the fishermen and demands to know where he is.

Maksimilian's icy gaze falls on the fishermen. "You there. Men of hook and net. If you wish to leave alive, you shall heed this offer. You shall bind yourselves to my service as guides while I have need, and I will guarantee your safety in my presence. When I dismiss you, you may leave freely, provided that you tell your people that the Lord of Frosts has come."

Thyraxxus clicks his tongue as the frost nymph grabs some new employees before he can. First offer tends to win out with desperates.

Stretching, he notes the undead with an aloof turn of the head. Vermin, beneath his notice except to impress the locals.

That left his apparently empowered companions, unfortunate mortal, and the wreckage. He considers the odds of finding treasure in any of them.

"Surviving a shipwreck requires mixed luck," he finally states with a grin, slapping the mortal on the back to help clear his lungs. "They say that's a good sign for a sailor."

Assist the coughing man. I'm familiar with sailors and probably shipwrecked ones.

Vax strides forward towards the oncoming dead. He raises a hand and commands them to halt. The shambling mass of undead stops in place, staring dumbly at their new master.

Maksimilian offers his offer to the two fishermen, to serve as his guides in exchange for a promise of safety. Obviously concerned, they agree to the deal. Better that than risking the Lord of Frosts anger.

Thuraxxus slaps the coughing man on the back, helping him expel the last remaining seawater. The man groans and flops onto his back, garish clothes ruined by seawater and sand.

“Nicomos,” he introduces himself as he sits up, extending his hand. He’s a sailor from Vissio, a proud son of the independent city.

Nahaniel and Breen tell the gathered Godbound that they are on the eastern shore of Ancalia, a few hours boat ride North from Nekoik.

“Merda,” Nicomos mutters. “We’re cursed. If you step foot on the land, you get the plague that’ll turn you into…” he gestures at the undead standing not too far away. “No one will risk us bringing the curse to their shores.” He glances at the assembled Godbound, from frosty haired Maksimillion to the albino Vax.

“They might not have taken us anyways. “

Nahaniel tells the group about their fishing village, not too far away.

 He pauses.
“Well, to be straight with you all, there’s… an arraignment. Some Ulstanger Vikings offered their protection in exchange for a cut of everything we make. And… that includes people.”

He shrugs, “It was either that or die.”

The fisherman offer their boat and their knowledge. Their coastal village is not too far, or they could guide you to the port of Nekoik, where unscrupulous traders and pirates drive hard bargains with the desperate. What do you do?

Note: if you miss a turn no big deal, you’ll get priority on any actions or questions in the next update.

Thyraxxus gives another toothy smile.

"Everyone takes opportunities. Let's see what Nekoik has to offer."

"Ulstangers." Lord Yared Althere says the name like a curse. "We haven't been able to deal with their raiders properly since the night roads opened."
He looks toward Vax. "Your control of the husks is impressive. If you could do the same to their draugr, then we could teach them a lesson."
As he speaks the sky turns to storm, and Yared realizes he's the cause. "And it appears I have a few tricks of my own. We should go to this village and show these invaders they are still  unwelcome in Ancalia."
