Or, given the pteroleons demonstrate high levels of both intelligence and social bonding, perhaps the act was sacrificial rather than an unknown and unobserved form of mind-control. That's a sacrifice we can't readily afford, and I agree with labelling the river as dangerous until we have further observations.
That's my gut instinct. It could be a like sacrifice to a volcano god, except in this case the volcano god is a large, extremely dangerous amphibious creature, and one smart enough to demand tribute(!) specifically of pteroleons instead of other meat.

I am going to nix my idea of exploring the rivers in dugout canoes. We can revisit that idea once we have battleship grade weapons. Multiple battleship grade weapons.

I will name my new friend Daedalus, after the myth of Icarus and Daedalus, may I never forget to heed his wisdom and never fly into the sun.
I'm surprised that he can fly with me.

I'd like to prospect the wetlands. We can look for a place to carve a footpath down to it, which will have to suffice until we can build a ramp for the quad.
In particular, we should try to find more giant turnips, search for downed trees or cut them down ourselves to test for how useful their wood is, look for bog iron, and collect samples of potentially edible plants.

The next time Nigel met Daedalus, he showed him his datapad, with a handful of carefully selected pictures from home. His house, his family, and various scenes of natural beauty. He made sure there was nothing too surprising, like photos from space or anything suggesting what the Followers of Zoab could become.
A gift for a gift, but all the colony could spare was stories.
(To be clear, the datapad isn't the gift. He's just showing the pictures and talking about them.)

Grace proposes that we must investigate the Loreleis with a drone, despite (and in fact because) of their danger. Should they posses mind control, it stands to reason they will use it on other creatures. Observing (and figuring out the rules) this behavior is a clear prerequisite to safe river exploration. This should be a simple side-task that we can accomplish together with a more involved main task. Since the turnip has turned out to be nutritious (breaking the theory of Mutual Inedibility of space organisms and perhaps supporting the Panspermia theory?!) she supports the wetland proposal.

My desire to search the edge of the badlands for the best place(s) to fashion the slope into a ramp — and we will want a ramp if we are bringing any significant load up from the swamp — can reasonably be folded into either of the current proposals.

As it stands, I like the forward thinking on both. Gonna vote "wetlands" so as not to tie.

The drone will be in use for the scouting main mission: what's below us as we descend the slopes, or what's above us under the forest canopy, get a recording of these rocks from a 360° angle, that sort of thing.

If we're just window shopping, I'm for it, but I don't think we can fold ramp-carving into anything until we have building materials to make it easier.

I'm against investigating the Loreleis with anything other than an underwater drone set to passively wait and observe. If it lures in Pterleons by anything other than psionics, which there is no evidence of, then it can likely detect a flying drone and be agitated by it.

In a few turns, I might be able to use pictures to ask Daedalus what happens if they don't feed themselves to the Lorelei. I'm not sure what answer would indicate psionics, but it would be easy enough to ask if it attacks if they don't feed it. And so, make sure we save photos of the Lorelei for later use.

Yes, I meant scouting for the place(s) with the least work needed to become a proper ramp, not making one this phase. I'm a bit confused why we couldn't carve a ramp without building materials, though. The stone itself will be the material; our practical ability to alter its contours is one of the factors of site selection.

Poor word choice on my part. Carving a ramp would cost the same, but my thinking was that it would be easier to make a ramp with logs or gravel than by carving it on the spot.

On second thought, maybe not. If we tried to "build a quarry," we'd still mostly be carving rocks with hand tools and very limited manpower. We could probably get some limited automation, even without the exoskeleton, but that's countered by the distance and having to get large blocks of stone down a cliff and into place by hand.

I would like to point out that our inventory is explicitly stated to have materials suitable for making explosives. If we want to expedite creating a ramp, I can set bombs (pretty sure that's a Defense specialty) to trigger a landslide or similar.

TURNTURNTURN

Exploration phase 2: from a drip into the rain. (roll: [1+2+2] -2 (Normal) = 3, There Is A Problem)

At the initiative of Nigel (influence +1), the crew decides to prospect the wetlands. They start out by searching the edge of the badlands for the best place to fashion the slope into a ramp.

As before, reconnaissance missions with the quad are mainly used by Phryne, since she can defend herself if necessary, while the other defense specialists remain at the base for safety. Her inspection reveals three suitable spots, each having different pros and cons.

The first spot she finds is next to the small waterfall, where the creek descends the slope. It naturally carved itself a way into the slope, greatly reducing the amount of work needed to create a traversable slope. Unfortunately, it leads to a particularly soggy part of the wetlands with ponds, quiet streams and very wet mud.

If the aim is to set feet on a relatively dry part of the wetlands, a much better place would be the point where the badlands meet the mountains, to the south. The drawback there is that the shale seems harder and you'd need to cut away more of it. Then again, this would make the ramp more durable in the long run, too.

Finally, Phryne scouts the slope further to the northeast. She discovers the third spot, which is the easiest one of all, because it turns out the steep slope gradually tapers off into a much more gradual slope! The only drawback is that it is further away and closer to the river, which you have a healthy respect for now. The ground to the northeast is not composed of the same shale as your base location, but more of a sandy clay. Here is an expanded Local Map, showing the new discovery. Note: the clearing on the other side of the river is shown as "shale badlands" for now, but the actual composition of this terrain isn't certain yet.

In the meantime, the drone is used to explore the wetlands themselves. The wetlands stretch out into a vast distance. Far to the east, the trees seem even to grow even taller. The drone catches glimpses of numerous weird unknown flora and fauna, too many to list them all in a forum post. So let's just have a look at a few notable species.

These animals seemed to be moving slowly and didn't make a single sound. The stand about 4-5 meter tall.

It hid itself between the trees as soon as it spotted the drone.

And yes, the drone spots more herds of the crawling things that you've witnessed the Pteroleons eating before.

Grace points out one striking difference with terrestrial forest: there are no flowers to be seen anywhere.

Now the crew sets out to gather more plant material in person. Phryne and Nigel cram themselves together on the quad with cutting tools and a bag, entering the wetlands from the north in order to gather plant samples and maybe even, as Nigel is hoping, a lump of bog iron. As the two of you arrive at the first tree growth, you're forced to stop. The terrain is really hard to navigate; the growth quickly gets very dense and the ground too soggy to drive or even walk through. Bugs of all kinds are assault you here. You wonder if you should have worn thicker protective clothing, although it would be uncomfortable in the warm, moisturous weather. Nonetheless you gather a few of the flora.

The most common type of tree turns out to have a trunk made out of spongy material, too soft for solid construction. You saw off a part for further analysis.

A less common and smaller type of tree does turn out to be made out of sturdy, dark woodlike material. This one is more work to saw, but you manage.

The most common type of plant is this prickly weed. You pull a small one from the ground and take it with you.
Spoiler: prickly weed (click to show/hide)

Another fairly common one you gather is something looking more like an oddly shaped mushroom.
Spoiler: oddly shaped mushroom (click to show/hide)

You want to keep searching, hoping to find at least one giant turnip, ignoring a soft drip of rain. But you stop in alarm as a thunder sounds above you. Dark clouds have gathered above you as you were busy and it starts to pour down. You decide to return. The badlands are not good at absorbing water and quickly become drenched. Your quad gets stuck in a muddy pool on the way back. You get off and start to pull. You're both tired, but Phryne uses the strength of her exoskeleton to get it unstuck. As you're finally done, looking at the situation and soaking wet, you wonder if it is wise to have the quad carry two persons in these conditions.

And then Nigel hears a familiar call. Daedalus descends from the grey skies, looking at the two of you with its peculiar large eyes. Nigel, in a hunch, walks over to the dangerously large beast and pats it. Daedalus bends into a low position, allowing Nigel to get onto its back.

"Are you really sure about this?" asks Phryne suspiciously.

"Relax Phryne, I'll be fine." says Nigel.

Daedalus slowly takes off, careful not to let this strange creature fall from its back. All it has to hold onto his skin is a weak pair of claws. It flies at low altitude to the shiny thing with the other creatures in it.

Back at the base, Nigel can't wait to carry out an idea he had, in spite of his limbs feeling like lead. Full of excitement he runs back outside, where Daedalus still lingers. He uses a datapad to show the beast a few pictures of his own house back on Mars. Nigel feels a pang of homesickness himself, but Daedalus doesn't really seem to understand the function of the tablet. He gives it a wet sniff and is distracted.
Nigel tries pictures of his family. This briefly catches the attention of the beast. But when Nigel shows a scene of Earthly nature, Daedalus emits a few screeches and flies off to a group of other Pteroleons. With a sigh, Nigel resigns and finds himself a warm dry bed.

While this is all going on, Lucy uses her artificial intelligence to sharpen the closest available camera images of the Lorelei into this enhanced picture.

It is now the Expansion phase. You get to propose any sort of ways to expand, build structures, reorganise yourself, conquer new terrain, etc.
As always, please don't hesitate to name things.

I'm starting to detect a pattern: most of the interesting critters in these parts are giants by terrestrial standards. Thankfully only the lorelei has shown any aggressiveness so far, but the implication is that we will need to add extra bracing to anything we construct just to prevent accidents.

I was just thinking how useful clay could be in the medium-near future. Being mixed with sand makes it difficult to use, though. And sand has its own uses, but being mixed with clay ruins the purity. "This planet can be quite frustrating."

I'd like to call those tall creatures striders.

Nigel, do you want a parachute or something? Taking rides is getting to be a thing with you.

----------

Ramp time!
- The stream option has too much water at the bottom, and at the top, too. It'll be prone to flooding and/or washing out.
- I don't think anybody wants to go that close to the river on a regular path right now.

So that leaves the path that is hardest to carve.
I would like to point out that our inventory is explicitly stated to have materials suitable for making explosives. If we want to expedite creating a ramp, I can set bombs (pretty sure that's a Defense specialty) to trigger a landslide or similar.
Turo rolls his eyes. And here I was thinking the Engineers would calculate the appropriate drilling points to break up the rock. I'd rather see a series of much smaller detonations that loosens a bit at a time. Though if you have experience in handling such things, any help will be much appreciated.

Any input on security concerns would be helpful, too. I'm thinking that any sections that require blasting should be limited in depth and height (making a sort of open-sided tunnel, or even a true tunnel if there's a prominent fin in the rock) so as to exclude the larger beasts from climbing to the plateau. I know we've discussed having a quad-sized ramp, but both the scope of the project and the size of the fauna make me think it would be safer to start with person-sized and work from there.

(From the update, we know that the quad can get down to the wetlands even if it can't use the new ramp, it just has trouble hauling any significant mass back up.)

We can use the Quad to haul wood on a travois, which is a sled attached to the back,
We can also whip up some travois for human use, in the form of a backpack attachment that lets the ground take some of the weight. It may be more tiring (for those of us without exoskeletons *I'm not jealous*) but we ought to be able to manage reasonably sized lumber. Note that any corners and switchbacks in the ramp need to include room for the trailing load to swing around.

I can't think of a better expansion action than a ramp near the mountain, that's only large enough for a human with a timber travois. There's no point in using irreplaceable explosives or precious time to make the ramp big enough for the quad, if the quad can't be used in the swamp.

If we had a renewable source of materials for it, yes.

That wasn't a promising response to the pictures by Daedalus. Next time, I'll show him photos from around our camp, and of myself. I want to try to see if there's some recognition of what a photo is. In a future turn, after bringing it up with my colleagues, I might try to teach him what the drone is, and that we see what it sees.

I reiterate my earlier call to prospect for farmland. We have mushrooms, but we could really use more. We should establish some infrastructure near the base for now that can experimentally grow a few different plants in at least semi-controlled conditions. I want to see how Earth plants like beans and tomatoes do here, and also, break ground for any other promising specimens we find in the environment. It's not necessarily my specialty to do this, but Phryne doesn't mind heavy labor at all.

I don't disagree with expanding our farmland. Rather, the main purpose of the ramp right now is to make it easier to collect farm-ready material from the wetlands. I don't think there's enough moss to scrape up for what we want to do.

Come to think of it, a mix of sand and clay makes a nice base for farm soil, more balanced than either of its constituents. Since the plateau naturally tapers into the sandy clay area, we wouldn't need a ramp to connect it. So, farm expansion is a valid idea. (Though I suspect Phryne will be on lookout duty for a riverside expedition(s) and not doing the heavy labor – even without exoskeleton help I'd rather it be her than just shoving a laser pistol in random hands. :) )

But (to no one's surprise) I'm voting for the ramp. I promise I will support field expansion next phase as an Exploit action.

P.S.
make a water cistern,
I actually wrote up a cistern proposal that I decided not to post back in the first turn because we have our magitech water recycler. Our thoughts match that once we have water needs (e.g. crop fields) beyond its capacity, a cistern will be a very good idea.

TURNTURNTURN

Expansion phase 2: .. and I'm digging a hole. (roll: [4+3+4] -2 (Normal) + 1 (Engineering specialty)) = 10, Unexpected Boon)

Turo (+1 influence) takes a hike with the quad to the point where the edge of the forest meets the edge of the mountains. Pteroleons are flying by as he travels, but he got used to that and ignores them. As soon as he arrives, he whips out his digital notepad, his laser rangefinder and he starts sketching.

The first observation he makes is that the ground here is definitely not the same type of shale as the badlands directly surrounding the base. It seems to be sandstone instead. Which is good news; solid enough for a sturdy tunnel, but easy to work with. But then he makes a more exciting discovery. A noticeable crack in the side of the mountain draws his attention. At close inspection, it is not just a crack, but a narrow opening. A quick measurement with his rangefinder shows that it leads into some sort of hollow at least 25 meters deep, perhaps a cave.

That same evening, Turo excitedly explains his finding to the crew and sets people to work. The chemicals are used to mix small explosive charges. Turo discusses his approach with the other engineers, showing them his notes. The following day, a small expedition sets out early in the morning with plenty of supplies. As there is only one quad, most of them travel by foot this time; a 15 km hike. The sky is clear and the starlight of Delta Pavonis warms their bodies.

They start by digging into the crack with razor sharp chromium-hardened steel picks to make it larger. Soon, the hole is large enough for a person to enter. Indeed, it turns out to be the entrance of a cave! Phryne enters with a lasergun and a lantern. She soon returns. As she reports, this is not just a small cave, but seems to be an expansive network. She avoided going too deep, as she didn't want to get lost, but she heard the noise of an underground waterfall further down.

In the following weeks, the crew explores the nearby reaches of the cave, staying close enough to be absolutely safe. It turns out that there is a natural pathway inside which reaches relatively near the forest floor. It is decided to carve a tunnel from there. Picks are used to dig out small openings that can be used to insert the explosive charges. After a few rounds of explosions, rock collapses to show open air.. the forest floor. Phryne stands ready for any striders or other animals entering, but no animals are to be seen.. except for a group of Pteroleons flying overhead and making excited noises. Maybe the explosions scared the forest fauna? In any case, you do not await the answer. Instead, Turo immediately instructs the crew on the installation of a titanium locked grill door, that he constructed from leftover materials, no longer needed at the base. The defense specialists advised this measure to prevent Striders or other wildlife from entering. In addition, he installs a small wireless security camera, so that the entrance can be monitored.

A second grill door is installed at the main pathway leading deeper into the cave. Here, you install a remote infrared camera to spot any wildlife in the darkness of the cave. Smaller openings leading into the deep are sealed, by collapsing them with a small explosion. You haven't found any lifeforms there yet, but better not to take any risks for now. A quick analysis of the stone here reveals that it is indeed partly sandstone. The cavern floor also contains quartz and you even find a cluster of rubies exposed to the surface.

Now that all entrances are secure, Phryne and Grace can't wait to take a few steps into the forest. It is obviously a somewhat different biome down here. The ground is more dry; it's actual clay, not soggy mud or sandy clay. You do not notice any trees of the two types you found nearby the river. The trees here look almost terrestrial.. although the trunk is really tall and quite thin. Grace explains that this might be a result of the slightly lower gravity. The pair of them break off a small sample and take it with them. It smells a bit like rotten peanut. Phryne has her new Travois with her that she can use to carry larger chunks, but doesn't need it at this time.

Spoiler: rotting peanut tree (click to show/hide)

Of course, producing the explosives depleted some of your Rare Mineral. Where some means about 20%.

Here is an update of the Local Map. It now shows two known tunnels: one connecting to the forest floor and one leading deeper into the mountains. As mentioned, both exits are closed off by a locked gate. Also shown is the difference between wetlands and the more dry forest, which is a slightly different biome. The border between them isn't necessarily completely accurate, but more like your current best estimate. (Also note that the transition is more gradual, in reality.)
Spoiler: Local Map (click to show/hide)

The next morning, the camera shows a few Striders approaching your newly installed forest gate. They try to stick their neck through. But then, to your amazement, you hear a familiar screeching. Pteroleons fly over and scare the striders away! As you all watch this happening, Nigel becomes a little uncomfortable. He has been studying them while the others were busy digging. And he could swear that the number of them flying (or sometimes idly sitting) nearby the base is slowly increasing. And you can't shake the feeling they are watching you. They watched while you were digging, they watch you while you sleep. Nigel feels conflicted. Is Daedalus really his best new friend? Daedalus obviously knows more about the Lorelei.. what else does he know, but unable to tell? Or, maybe even.. unwilling?

It is now the Exploitation phase. You can start exploiting known resources, or build / invent new methods of exploitation.

Turo: you get to name your tunnel. (Of course anyone is welcome to come up with a better name for the rotting peanut tree, or any other species / location, as always. An updated complete list with pictures can now be found in the first post.)
Nigel: Please let us know if (and what) you tell the crew about your suspicions about the Pteroleons.
