"Your exalted Trader must be a truly efficient man if a meeting of this length is cause for concern. I have heard nothing from his Highness the Governor, a silence that no doubt promises that your master is safe. Rest assured that there is nowhere in the expanse that he could possibly be safer."

Kedia scoffs with annoyance and barely hesitates before passing the embarrassment off on her comrade.
"I see. It is just that my friend here is getting nervous because nothing horrible has happened yet. She is from a death world, you know. Always wary, this one."

"I suppose these terms are amenable. I'll also need an assurance of autonomy in my field of expertise. I will answer to you, not to coequal officers.
And lastly, when invited to join a secret mission, I expect a reasonable upfront payment, in case of unforeseeable outcomes."

"Of course, Captain Ruori. You're a specialist in your field, and I'd be loathe to bring new blood into the Ark Royal only to have them as gofers to those who've been around longer."

"What sort of upfront payment? Standard currency and goods for expenditure or anything more specific?" Marco knows that despite his diminished stature at the moment, Ruori is still (technically) part of a Trader dynasty, even if his vendetta with Icewhite is the most compelling proof he isn't just a charlatan.

On the other hand, I understand you come well-equipped for a more useful offering. In exchange for my services with a minimum of questions, I'll accept personal ownership of one fighter craft, fuelled and supplied, in functional condition. Of course, as my personal property, it will remain at your disposal as long as I do; but if the need to hastily unwind our contract should arise, perhaps due to whatever information may have been withheld from me, I shall take it in lieu of payment."

"It'd be offensive to my fellow captains' intellects if I pretended I don't have the best void assets in the moment. I assume that's fairly obvious. What about your vessel, Captain Triggvaldr?"

"The Inscrutable Horse is receiving servicing at the moment, much like someone else I could mention, but it's only a short trip to retrieve her. I assure you she's an entirely capable craft, likely one of the best you'll find around these parts.

"Yes, mine is one. I can give you as much information as I've given Captain Ruori, which isn't much since I'd rather be discreet until I can reveal the information. Business as usual.

"But ship to ship combat is expected at some point, at the very least and possibly against heretical raiders and most certainly against a xeno capital ship some time in the future."

[Stirk]

"I see. You're thinking, then, that it certainly can't hurt to have another ship by your side in your ship to ship combat.
All right, I'll humor your interrogation. I am an excellent and highly trained captain. My specialty is mercantile, but I am quite capable in combat. I will admit that I have never personally engaged a xeno capital ship in direct combat, but I... have some familiarity with them, and I do not think this would be beyond the range of my abilities. I will, of course, expect a share in the profits of your undertaking no less than the largest offered to another participant, and it will be understood that I may call upon your assistance for a favor at some future time in exchange for my service. Moreover, my ship answers to me and what I choose to do with her in the furtherance of our agreement is my own business. You will have to have faith in my professional judgement."

Kedia stares at the guard for a second before turning around and walking away without so much as a "Sorry for bothering you."

"I've been wondering. Indaria, do you know anything about this 'Regent Guilliman', uh, person? The one who undersigned the agreement between the captain and that harlequin?"

"Supposedly he's some really old space marine that has been sleeping since the Emperor took the Throne. Woke up recently, and the Emperor said Guilliman's his son and made him second-in-command. Apparently wants to fix things and let humanity regain stuff we lost over time since back then. He's important to me because he has told the Inquisition to calm down and be less murdery, and as a result is probably why I'm still alive."
