I always go with CREST as my starting word since it is mostly made of the most commonly used letters in English.

I usually go with RATES (suggested by Aoi).  It instantly makes most games more interesting by ruling out E and/or R, forcing me out of my comfort zone for as long as possible.  And the S at the end immediately lets me know if there's any plural shenanigans.

Do most of you pick different starting words for wordle or do you have a standard first guess?

I always go with CREST as my starting word since it is mostly made of the most commonly used letters in English.

I open with EARLY and PIOUS to cover all vowels + Y, plus some consonants often found in clusters. Unless I manage to snatch at least 3 clues(one being green) with the first word I prefer not to go for a guess on the second word.

Not many words end that way... *comes up with two wrong ones* 

Does Wordle even do simple plurals? If it doesn't, that dramatically diminishes the value of a final S... which, now that I think about it, may be of questionable use anyways-- you're still in the dark about the remaining four letters, and there's still the risk of a psychological red herring where you're stuck on a pluralized word when it's a legit 5-letter word ending in S.
