I'm working my way up to Margit, feels a lot like Gascoigne or the gargoyles in DS, the "did you actually learn how to play or are you still flailing around till you get lucky" boss.

One thing I've noticed is that being speedy seems like the way to go.  Bloodborne style bosses with fast sequences of attacks and heavy stamina costs on hit, I can't imagine a fat roller getting far.  Went with the knight starting class, using greatsword, have my endurance enough to stay at medium encumbrance.

Definitely a lot of framerate issues in the open world, but I'm hoping they'll get fixed.  Removing depth of field and motion blur seems to help a bit, and both of those things tend to make games look worse anyway.

Beat Margit.  Switched to

Also is anyone else finding the entire "souls" concept a little strange?  At this point we're up to what, five separate fromsoft universes, all of which are basically built around justifying the souls game mechanics?  Like this is literally dark souls 4, except it's in a different universe, which also happens to have immortal warriors who are linked to little spots on the ground and can spend a weird currency to make themselves stronger, except all the nouns are different.

I would be a lot harder on them for all the similarities between the games if I didn't love them all so much.

Like sure, this is open world Dark Souls, But. so what? Sure, its a little disappointing, but with how rich and flavorful the world is its hard to be properly angry.
I do really appreciate them really changing up the lore though and not just making it DS4. New lore to devour is very nice.

Also, I could just be imagining it but the 1.03 patch did seem to noticably improve frame rate.
---
I dunno how strong other stuff is, but I've been playing as a mage (as I do in every DS game cause I'm an idiot that loves mages despite them not being the funnest way to play the game) and the starting spells feel really strong and great, while most of the other spells are kind of useless so far.

Its honestly a little sad how the starting spells are so strong, because mostly I just kill 90% of enemies with them at range before they can even close while not using all the neat other spells I bought cause they are slightly weaker or just flat out useless.

Remember that spells can be charged, IIRC, which produce different effects depending on the amount of charge.

I cleared Roundtable Hold and never found the Beast Clergymen. Am I just blind? A friend of my mentioned him but I never found them even after going over it twice.

Anyone who tries to say ER isn't just Dark Souls 4 has drank too much of the koolaid.

Lots of names don't work for me. "Site of Grace" doesn't roll off the tongue like "Bonfire." "Finger--" anything just sounds like GRRM's dirty old man mind at work. I don't mind "Runes" as a concept and name and sorta wish Souls had started out with that. Various other things here and there where I feel like the naming conventions don't quite work.

I found
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My biggest wow moment was finding the Ashes of War vendor in Limgrave. Up until now I'd gotten weapons arts and yadda yadda but wasn't using most of them or seeing the true utility. But he has a list of basic Ashes of War and the possibilities really delighted me. Quickstep on Ultra Greatswords. Kick on your shield. Adding parry to shields that don't already have it. Making any shield into a "Weapon Art" shield. The list goes on. While this is only somewhat amazing for playing through the game, the possibilities for PvP are kind of endless. Even if I don't get much into ER PvP, the channels I watch are going to have content for years to come.

Also fought and killed my first invader last night with a buddy. In the ~10 hours we've done coop, that is the first and only invader we've gotten. I imagine it's such a target rich environment for invasions that there's more people to invade than invaders doing it. (And they're all probably still trying to beat them game.) Still. With a 3 man coop squad we played for quite a while together and never saw an invader. It's just surprising for a soul's game. I wonder if people who say they're open to being invaded in SP or what have you get the lion's share of invasions, and people doing coop get what's left over.

All THAT said.....I'm still using the Longsword >.>. I have yet to find another straight sword. And I think it's contributing to my feeling underpowered. Evergaol bosses seem to give me troubles where most other stuff I can just block/casually dodge and eventually figure it out. Evergaol bosses though seem to challenge your build both by the confined space and the fact, of the two I've fought, they're of radically different "builds."

after looking through his youtube, that guy is a professional troll so... get baited lol

can't believe people make so much money copy pasting videos, and changing out the game titles. whats great about this troll is that his very existence, his 'success', is kind of a troll in it's own right, so even if you dodge the bait you still think about him and get angry.

The recent patch fixed some of my issues. I get better frames, the areas load in, and I don't fall through the map any more. Most importantly, I finally got Torrent! I couldn't before the patch, the Site of Grace that is tied to the cutscene where you get him wouldn't let me touch it.

The only thing wrong is that most enemies are still invisible. And most NPC's are invisible. And Torrent is invisible:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That being said, I said "Fuck it" and did what I was gonna do anyway: completely ignore the main objective and start exploring. Holy shit do I have so much freedom. I can't see any of the threats on the map, or a lot of the animals, so the world feels really empty, but even though I can't see the threats, Torrent runs fast enough to let me outrun absolutely everything, and this lets me see the huge, awesome world largely unmolested. I managed to jump over a ravine and got into a section of the map I obviously wasn't meant to be in yet. Tried going into these little dungeons that are littered all over, turn around flee from those dungeons after getting my shit shoved in by invisible stone gremlins.

I found several side quests that I promptly ignored because fuck it, I'm exploring. I found an elevator that deposited my ass into this awesome underground cavern. I just barely manage to make my way through it and luckily had a Stonesward key to activate another elevator... that leads into a place that looks like hell on earth. Holy shit. I seriously fucked up when I found an NPC that was telling me about another sidequest about a nearby town, but a giant ass doggy followed me to his hut and killed him. I really don't like fucking myself out of content like that, but oh well, I hope he wasn't important. He said he was a sage, but he wasn't very smart to be living next to the scariest doggo ever in a ramshackle hut. I'm only level 5, I have a handaxe and no armor whatsoever, and I can't hurt shit in this evil-ass land.

I feel I've uncovered a majority of the map already, and I can't wait for the game to be patched so I can actually see the enemies I need to kill, so I can actually progress along the intended storyline.

You have not.

The map is insanely huge, I really can't believe how much stuff is in this game, and how much of it seems to be completely optional.  One thing that's really cool but also a little nerve-wracking is the lack of copy-paste ubisoft style content.  On one hand, everything is really cool and unique.  On the other, the map is so huge and the "content" areas are so... "not sitting underneath a big neon sign that says GAMEPLAY HERE" that I'm continually worried I'll walk past something cool or useful and just never even know it was there.

Also pro tip, use a notebook, or sticky notes, or something.  When you meet an NPC, place a marker.  There's no quest log or markers for the most part, and you'll want to keep track of things you find because it may be hard to find them again.

As Cthulhu says you are misled here. Not by any fault of your own, but presumably by fromsoft making the starting viewable map size very small to troll people intentionally and keep mystery. The actual map is pretty damn meaty.
