I'm ok with sex being not displayed in the game, but I realy wish my adventurer could start a dynasty. Sadly, this is not possible without reproductive behaviour. ;)
I once explained Dwarf Fortress to my girlfriend, using The Sims as an example. That game has sex implemented, but manages to go around the delicate parts.

As for exciting storytelling: Love > Sex. And even though storys of rape could be intresting, many people wouldn't enjoy them, I guess.
Adventurer romance and dynasty forming is planned. Not for a while yet though probably. And actual sex isn't likely to get further than the "time-passes" screen.

Expect to have to write poetry or something to get anything moving.

Good points. I guess my only follow up to the comments tending to "what is the point" would be that sex is something that even very small organisms do, some in a very similar manner. It is profoundly basic, and the ways it could be relevant to a story (something I've often heard touted about Dwarf Fortress is the stories it generates through play) are as diverse as the ways terrain can be generated. I guess it just feels like the story is not all there.

Entertainment reflects truth back to the consumer. I think skewed and unhealthy views on sex are a problem globally, but being able to observe it in a safe environment can help with discovery and becoming a more whole person. I think Dwarf Fortress teaches a lot about the consequences of hate over time, isolation, friendship, what ever it simulates it does so in a neutral way, and that is teaching.

I understand there is a balance between making a marketable product and a piece of art. I remember standing at a museum where the game was on display as a piece of the second.

Imagine one character being an unsatisfying lover, or unappreciative? How will their partner respond? How do they improve their life? Imagine seeing a model of how to improve your love life, demonstrated infront of you, honestly with a game that isn't patronizing you.

Romance is modeled in the game, though, already, see. I guess there aren't jilted lovers in the game, yet. But, a dwarf who fails to attract a mate by being a social klutz will fail to get happy thoughts from their marriage (and sad ones as well, if something bad happens to their loved one).

Mechanical reproduction is modeled in the game as well, to a surprising degree. There is animal husbandry, and egg-layers require a different strategies. And then there are the night trolls, who can only reproduce by capturing a creature of opposite sex from another culture, converting him or her into a night troll, and breeding with him or her. That's a pretty complicated life cycle for a creature in a game, but the reason it's included is that has huge storytelling potential.

I guess other people want to see more sex in the game, too, since we have, e.g. the Succubus Dungeon mod. I haven't played it but it says it has "multi-lover" support.

As other posters have said, it's all about what stories you're trying to make possible, and who you're trying to entertain. I think there is clearly a line, though, where too much graphic sex would turn some people away from the game. But there's also clearly room for a few more tiptoes before the devs cross it.

One more thing, I think seeing how a relationship becomes sexual is also interesting. Are advances tame or bold, what does that show about each individual, and how does that kind of person handle different, non-sexual parts of their life.

I imagine there's NSFW mods for entertainment, but I think I am talking about something a little more...organic? Emergent?

Though not too dissimilar from other systems in the game. Just how a wound in combat may change an entity's lifestyle, so too might a fetish.

Dwarves reproduce by sporulation as far as I know...? As for descriptions of intercourse in game, this is unlikely to happen. Luckily for you, there are other text based games that catter to this kind of audience. Good luck learning the game !

In ancient versions of the game, yes. Hasn't been true for a while. Dwarves need to be in contact to reproduce these days (with some weird edge cases involving reproduction through cages...).

Yep. The spores only travel one tile out now though, so the partners in question need to walk past each other. It's a touch. But that's about it.

....Remember when spores were whole-map-radius? Maaan we could have used animal gelding back then!

As mentioned, the male and the female have to spend some time next to each other (or on the same tile) and it doesn't happen 100% of the time. Caged males can impregnate females next to the cage (free ranging or chained up, but not caged), while caged females can't be impregnated (but if already impregnated, they'll give birth while caged). As far as I think I've seen, female dorfs won't get pregnant when sleeping beside an inactive husband, but I think I've seen females getting pregnant while being inactive next to a sleeping husband: however, that needs confirmation ("seen" means using a DFHack script to check whether the female is pregnant or not when the pair enters and exit possible impregnation configurations).

I remember being quite confused when my female cats were suddenly giving birth to kittens without any males around. Took some time to figure out that merchants had brought a caged male cat with them and impregnated every single one female cat wandering next to it.
