If Rimworld have an independent forum, then that would be a possible successor.

Nah. Rimworld tries to control what you get too much.

One day the forum will die (probably because of irreparable backend instability)

All those shitposts will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

The gitpg flrums are transitikning to new servers, I’m sure someone with enough tech savvy could do something akin to it with our lovely forums maybe possibly if Toady was okay with it.

All of this false information going around is covering up the truth, when they pass away the game and all files related to it are going to put in a safe then thrown into a volcano!

If the dwarf carrying the safe doesn't get himself washed down a waterfall on the way there.

What is dead may never die, etcetera etcetera.

That said, if such a thing did come to pass I imagine I'd just relocate to Revelation of Doom. It even uses SMF!
I'm still yet to find a forum with anywhere near as good an atmosphere for forum games, bizarre discussions and general silliness, though.

We will make out own forums when the time comes, and we'll call it Bay12 2 because we're really creative.

More than even the MoMA, though, the brothers are putting their faith in the community to keep the dream alive long after they're gone. "I don't think we'd actually need to do anything, even release the source, for Dwarf Fortress' community to carry on," he says. "It would just be better if people could make their own changes."

1. So the plan is NOT to release the source code?

2. My question was about the forum. It has upkeep costs and human moderation.

What happens to the poems in creative writing, the legacy fortress stories, the forum game archives? I care about this stuff and want to see it preserved!

So make an archival copy and store it somewhere. There's programs that'll nab up entire websites to make an offline copy of everything public facing.

Hmm, as I read the OP, then the question is not about the Dwarf Fortress game, but about the Bay12 community.

I hope we would have time to agree on a new forum to migrate to.
If Rimworld have an independent forum, then that would be a possible successor.
I.e. part of what makes the Bay12 forum is that there is one central game that everyone (I guess) have some interest in, but it allows people to take a break from managing dwarfs, and just hang out in the lower forum until the interest is rekindled or a new version arrives.  :)
Why won't they pass on the forums to whoever will be in charge of DF?

The quote seems to say that he believes the community is dedicated enough to exist without the source code, and then immediately adds in the next quote a reason why he thinks it'll be better to release the source.

Since the game is developed in C++ (?) decompiling the exe and manipulating memory to reverse-engineer everything is pretty laborious, but honestly I think some people would be willing to go through a comprehensive hack-through to achieve a reasonably accurate rewrite. Even if he were opposed to releasing the source (he obviously isn't) he's probably right in that it would only delay the project's continuation.
