Autumn, 1890, Design Phase. The Light Gun Modernization Project, is a program with the intended goal of creating a new set of light naval guns (6 inches and smaller) meet the navy's increasing need for better guns. The program comes in two part the guns them selves and the ammo they fire.
The guns are to be designed to handle the new Lorem powder propellants at 1.5 times the expected maximum load to ensure safe margin. Unlike the previous generation of light naval guns these new ones have replaced the old BL screw blocks with QF sliding wedge breach blocks, the gun barrel will be of a new build type which will be called "radially expanded", unlike other build types which used hoops or wire to reinforce the barrel it used a technique called autofrettage to strengthen the barrel itself to be able to handle the high pressures experienced in the gun chamber. This results in a single piece barrel that is as light as wire wound while being cheaper and fast to make. Instead of having the rifling be engraved directly onto the interior of the barrel it self an internal liner with the rifling is placed inside which can be replaced when the rifling is worn out greatly extending the service life of the barrels. With the anticipated increase in power from the new Lorem powder and thus recoil, all gun will have hydraulic recoil pistons to cushion the recoil ensuring that the gun mount do not get shaken apart from repeated firing.
For the Ammo all shells are improved using the latest in steel forging technique and metallurgy allowing for stronger shells for better armour piercing for AP shells and for thinner shell walls for increased HE capacity for HE shells. additionally AP shells tipped with a soft metal cap to help resist against shattering for better armour piercing against face hardened armours. the shells are to be filled with Ecrasite. for guns smaller than 4 inches they use fixed ammunition where as 4 inches and above use semi fixed ammunition for ease of handling and to allow for variable propellant charges.

The Light Gun Modernization Project is expected not to take very long before its results can enter service, however, its expected to be a bit costly, and the initial progress on the project is a bit behind schedule. Sill, despite this, it is likely to not take more than another season to finish development of the project and the gun designs included inside it. Just a bit more expensive than we would like.

The results of the Light Gun Modernization Project have gone...Fairly well. While we have a large number of guns that we need to test and create, the early tests show that all of these light guns have improved performance over their predecessors. Due to the use of the new Lorem power and designed to properly exploit it, the guns can fire at a fairly long range compared to most of our older guns, in fact, the largest gun of the project, the QF 6"/45 Lorem M1890, is able to get to a maximum range of about 16,500 yards Most noticeably however, with the forging technique used and the rifling being separate, all the guns are shockingly reliable, especially compared to their older predecessors. They practically never jam, and nothing short of getting directly hit by a shell will disable it.
The other guns are good too, the QF 5"/45 Lorem M1890 has a max range of about 14,000 yards, the QF 4"/45 Lorem M1890 12,000 yards, the QF 3"/40 Lorem M1890 6500 yards, and the QF 6 pounder 2"/40 Lorem M1890 4500 yards. All of them are also just as reliable and durable. The issue however, is cost. The construction method is a bit time consuming, and it requires the creation of rifling linings to be inserted into the barrel rather than made into it. So, it is expected to cost a bit more than our current guns, but that is to be expected when it comes to quality.
Face hardened armour(harvey armour)
Face hardened armour is a new type of armour that has the benefits of the now obsolete compound armour while be made of a single armour plate. This is done be a process called face hardening where the face surface of the armour plate is covered in charcoal and heated for 2 to 3 weeks increasing the carbon content of one side of the plate before being quenched ine oil and than water. This leaves a plate with a hard face to shatter impacting shell while also having a tough and amaluable back to minimize the risk of the armour plate shattering or spalling and with a single armour plate which removes the risk of armour plates separating like compound armour.

The starting progress on the new Armour is at an average pace, but the end of our work is a long and expensive road ahead from what we can gather. There are quite a few idea's and techniques to go through however we have found one very promising one that we are quite likely to use, but we still will experiment with the best way to apply this technique and mix of an alloy to make the sturdiest armour currently available to us.

While we have only called this 'face hardened armour' it might be best for us to come up with a different name as to make it more distinct. Regardless, early on we have found that the face hardening technique could be taken a much more effective step further, specifically by utilizing carbon-bearing gases to the heated steel rather than simply leaving coal or charcoal on the surface of the metal. Additionally, we have applied a small amount of chromium instead of nickle steel. The results, from some early tests compared to the original idea, show that the application of this different kind of armor means we will save about two inches of armour thickness and weight while retaining the same strength as two extra inches of the original method of creating this steel armour.
The only issue we have found is that this makes it more likely to cause spalling despite the weight reduction, however it is possible through time and futher testing we can find a way to fix this issue and perfect our little armour creation we have going for ourselves. After all, we have plenty of time before we will be finished with our work, and its best to perfect it while its on the drawing board still rather than when its already on our ships. Still, the future looks very bright and promising for this new idea, even if its stuck a bit further in the future than we'd like due to the time we have roughly estimated it would require. Still, we can use both variants of it once we are finished with our work. Though, in the end we might only stick with one...
