Ball Lightning Company
Ball Lightning Company is named after, well, ball lightning (and, yes, several members of the company have had giggles about the name), and ball lightning captures the spirit of the group -- extremely sudden, extremely bizarre, extremely mobile, and extremely dangerous. Veterans of several mercenary conflicts (many of them rather shady in nature), the Ball Lightning Company is a core of people that are largely genuine friends, and also largely (to be blunt) massive assholes. The gargantuan assholishness of the members of this outfit, however, is a boon rather than a curse.

The members of the BLC specialize, as their Methods of Engagement, in being extremely disruptive to the actions of enemy outfits, through a combination of attacks, diversion, and surprisingly asymmetric warfare, something their nature as a bunch of dickheads helps them excel in -- they're frankly ingenious at finding ways to infuriate and distract foes to a level disproportionate to the amount of actual damage they deal; though they are far from harmless, they tend to focus on performing rapid strikes at vulnerable pieces of an element or high-value targets such as officers and transports before melting away or sticking around the outskirts of the enemy force to harass them more before hitting them again. Sometimes, they're even known to directly taunt the enemy vocally in these actions, just to be aggravating.

For these purposes, they tend to lean towards consisting primarily (though not entirely) of Light Assaults and Infiltrators. The Australia, for obvious reasons, is the main infantry platform of the Outfit, and their Light Assaults in particular use this weapon during their strikes, often paired with a Wellington Mk2 (their primary tool against vehicles) as well as a UBM Clyde-II and UBM Kaczynski to provide a devastating and sudden anti-infantry tool and to make the first strikes of the rifle devastating respectively. Infiltrators of the company use the Australia R/O, making use of its nature as a light sniper rifle to be able to shoot targets and rapidly reposition before enemy forces can actually bear down on them.

(Favoured Weaponry: Light weaponry with powerful alpha strikes (like the Wellington Mk2, or the Australia fitted with a Clyde. Maybe the R/O counts for this?))

Alcatraz Moddable Pistol

All-class secondary

The "little brother" of the Australia rifle that is our mainstay, the Alcatraz gives our troops a backup weapon in combat in case they run out of charge before the enemy dies, or in the case of sniper-rifle wielding soldiers, if they get too close for their weapon to be effective. It's design is slim, built for the quick draw. Unlike the Australia, it is a beam weapon - the idea being that if you need to use it, you're in a situation where you can't really take the time to aim. It has two mod slots to enhance functionality similar to Australia, and can accept the same universal mods (although the effects are proportional to the gun). By default, the beam focuses on power over accuracy and duration, but of course modules can change that.

SWT-3 Charlotte Scout Walker

At this point, it's half a matter of effectiveness, and half a matter of principal. No, this isn't sunk cost fallacy, what are you talking about? Our scout tank is slower than our main battle tank, and that will not do. Besides that, the dense urban space of our current battlefield is such that an Arachne that worked as desired would be very effective.

The Charlotte is, in essence, an Arachne with some upgrades. The main armament is left alone, mostly; an Eta Alcor was bolted to the side to be controlled by the gunner if engaging infantry, and that's about it. What changes is it's mobility and armor. The legs have been updated, again. Strong gripping claws were added so that the Charlotte can climb buildings. The joints were reinforced to handle the ability to jump and land from it, although the legs also have light jets (not meant to hover, but to add some oomph to the jump and soften the landing). The goal is, in essence, to allow the Charlotte to jump onto high ground and climb around on it at an angle that enemy vehicles will have difficulty firing on.

With that in mind, the armor isn't very heavy; the Charlotte isn't meant to take on tanks in a fair fight, so all it needs is light armor, sufficient that small arms fire won't pierce it. No going Rambo on this spider tank.

Goats have been requisitioned by the more superstitious members of the design team to sacrifice for good luck. We're kinda worried about them.

SWT-3 Iktomi Scout Walker

While NC engineers are torn on whether the Iktomi is truly next-gen, they widely agree that "stupid fucking piece of shit asshole design better get fucking good now".

The Iktomi doesn't, for the largest part, upgrade matters of armament, or really even most things that have to do with direct combat -- the largest concession that sees is 15mm armor added to the Iktomi's body and legs, with the goal of making sure that small arms aren't enough to dissuade the thing from moving across environments ahead of the rest of the army. Mostly, it just keeps the armament of the Arachne.

Instead, the vast majority of work on the Iktomi involves the legs, with the goal of making the Iktomi the quick-moving, terrain-climbing, terrifyingly-jumping monstrosity that it was always meant to be. The legs are made bigger, thicker, with the goal of giving their joints much more volume and their segments much more strength. These larger, heavier-duty joints are meant both to withstand shock much better, and to be able to exert much more force -- the upside of this is that there's much less need to worry about a couple of the legs folding in uneven terrain and bringing the whole tank down. The eight legs, being each stronger, are better able to balance the tank like they should, even over extremely uneven terrain -- after all, the much stronger joints are capable of better articulation and range of motion. They're also meant to allow the tank to jump like it was always supposed to, as all eight legs together are able to exert quite a bit of force. The fact that the leg segments are stronger and tougher also allows the Iktomi to climb, at least so long as the building in question can hold its weight -- the legs are simply meant to punch through surfaces, with the eight legs working in tandem to make this a secure grip despite the lack of claw or other paraphernalia. (And, well... what other things might this be able to punch through?)

End goal: tank parkour. (Maybe that is pretty darn nextgen, huh?)

Turn 1 Design Phase

Proposal: SWT-3 Iktomi Scout Walker
Difficulty: Easy
Result: (6+2)+1=9, Above Average

Building off of our plentiful experience regarding what not to do with walking tanks, and our development of properly articulating spider-like legs, the Iktomi is essentially just an upgraded Arachne that functions as it was designed to. The Iktomi retains the spike launcher and 10mm particle cannon of it's predecessor while adding much needed 15mm armor, reinforced and strengthened limbs, nearly unrestricted joints, and - most importantly - precision controls that allow Scout Walkers to jump and pounce.

Each limb ends in a large piston rod seated all the way through the core of the bottom leg segment. These pistons can be fired in controlled increments through solid objects in an attempt to find purchase enough to support the vehicle. The Iktomi is slower than more conventionally designed armored scout vehicles with a top speed of 60km/h, but it is hardly slowed by obstacles so long as it can find a way to climb up, over, or around them. The leaping capabilities of the Iktomi require a couple seconds for all of the vehicle's subsystems and parts required for the task sync up, but results in a rapid burst of movement of nearly ten meters. This ability requires that crew are strapped in at all times, but that's better than being crumpled against sensitive equipment or battering your skull against the radio.

Overall the Iktomi performs well, but it could be better. As is, it will see it's use at an (EXPENSIVE) level. It fills the same role as the Arachne, but better, diminishing what attention it did get and making it (OBSOLETE). Any Arachne currently in circulation will no longer be supported by the Nextgen Consortium, as they are now decidedly last gen.

IT IS NOW THE REVISION PHASE.

Roofs OS
The slowness of the Iktomi and the fact that it requires a couple of seconds to pause in the middle of combat for its subsystems to sync up suggests that a problem has once again reared its ugly head: our software in parts is awfully last-gen, much like in the original Volley-0. If there is an issue with performing the tasks that Iktomi does appear to have the physical capacity to now do, then the software would appear to be having issues balancing multiple precision commands at once, requiring that the walker slow down in order to be able to process all of the precision control required for movement. The Roofs OS is a less last-gen option, with the Iktomi's computers reworked to have several powerful processing cores, with the tasks of operating the walker seamlessly jumping between them in multi-threading that rapidly adapts to the next tasks given. What this means is that the Iktomi should be able to move faster, processing everything involved with being a walking, climbing tank more quickly, and that the sync-up period for the jump should disappear, as the operation of systems and subsystems of the tank will be divided up among processor cores sufficiently to keep each of these systems constantly either moving or maintaining a balanced state so that there's no need to suddenly resync all of them when only a couple of systems should be out of place at a time.

R/O Long Range Rifle Scope:

The fact is, the R/O is basically just worse than actually putting a Ruby and an Oswald module into the Australia. A significant part of that is that our only targetting equipment that's used with it is the reliable for normal use, but rather last gen for long range use, Mk.1 Human Eyeball. So we're fixing that, by giving the R/O a scope. It's not much. But it's hopefully going to dramatically improve effectiveness, since now soldiers can actually make use of it's effective range. The scope has variable zooms of 4x, 8x, and 16x, and a toggled thermal vision mode. Since this scope is a modification to an infiltrator-only piece of equipment, it's only usable by infiltrators.
