Vikram, a lowly servant and helper to the mages bows his head. "Sirs, if I may offer my opinion... I wish for the ritual to go on. The cost tis great, yet the the cold grows each day."

Vikram takes a moment to gesture toward the cold plains stretching far beyond. "Even here, the chill grows. Even if the souls are lost, it will not matter. The ice will take us soon, and there will be no more ancestors or souls to be guarded. Please forgive me for saying this... but what is a god without followers?"

Tyraz, former Tyrant of the Free City of Azcaland, and one of the assembled mages, gestures forcefully with his staff. "Feh. You god fearers are all the same. Don't do this, don't do that, it's blasphemy or heresy or an abomination before the eyes of eggplant. Convey your delusions to the commonfolk if you wish, should any survive the coming years, but I will seize true immortality, the immortality of the spirit, for all of us before I fall. What other frontier is left for one such as me?"

Eadgert, nephew to the acclaimed mage Sybeth, mournfully approaches the circle. "If it works, if this ritual works, do you think I'll see father again? What about everyone we've lost to the cold?"

((Don't forget to chime in if you feel the Question's been answered; we can always explore what happens next later))

Fallas, eldest(but not most skilled) of the mages in the circle, responds. "You will, child. I've checked Sybeth's work. We all have. The Law of Primes is used doubly, as there are thirteen of us here, which is a prime, and is the seventh prime, and seven is itself a prime. The Law of Unity is used, as all but one of us play the same part in the ritual, and we have taken pains to make ourselves as alike as possible once the ritual begins. The Law of Symmetry is used, as we stand in a circle, the most symmetrical shape. Many more Laws are used properly to boost the ritual, from the Laws of Resonance and Law of Proportional Sacrifice, and often intertwine to boost each other, in ways we still don't fully understand. Mm." Fallas turns to Sybeth. "Sybeth, there is still one more Lunar Resonance Point we could wait for before we enter the Lesser Lunar Cycle, though it would not be ideal. We may have checked the ritual and found it good, but your eyes may see more than we do. You are the lead mage. This must be your decision. Do you wish to go through with this ritual now? Your decision must be swift. The Lunar Resonance Point approaches, and we still have not donned our masks. Once we begin, there will be no turning back."

"Aye, ought we do this task most foul quickly, and allow our peoples the life eternal. Aft'rall, have we not already crossed the point of evil, the point where our very Essence has withered ont the vine, and the Dream taken our organs for her own game?" The Councillor from Lotheraislle donned her mask and awaited for Sybeth's word, knowing full well that it was more than likely that their own souls would be shredded to oblivion after this ritual was completed. They deserved it, did they not? The blood of her own daughters was still fresh on her hands and she was more than sure that her fellow magi had prepared their own anima in likewise methods.

"Aft'rall, godspeaker, did the Prophet of Green not say upon her deathbed that the Righteous will find Paradise at the end of the Age, and after a great sacrifice had been made? Have we 13 not made great sacrifice already, and does not this grand chill end our grand age upon this Land of Once-Dark and Once-Sleep? The Augerines haft already retreated into their carapace-pods and ast we kan't not follow suit, we must embrace the End and create what the gods will: A Life Eternal for their Beloved Apostles."

Sybeth considers Fallas' suggestion and shakes her head slowly. "No. Every night we wait is another night our elders and children weaken. We cannot afford to delay the ritual. Anlald, the crystal."

Anlald and two robed youths solemnly place the crystal at the center of the circle.

Sybeth looks into the primordial honey crystal, a relic from a time when the bees held sway over the lands, and dons her mask, trying to banish her guilt over the preparations.

"Esteemed fellows, let us now begin."

Scene concluded! The Question has been answered

Quote
What value does an afterlife hold for the people given the terrible cost of the ritual?
Eternal life, immortality, and continued existence. With such a price, it will surely last for another age and more.

Next step: micelus, create a new Period, Event, or Scene, preferably related to the current Focus, the unknown inventor of the ritual.

Quote from: Timeline
Light: After long ages, the Generation Ship has finally reached its destination.
  • Dark: The ship's ADI (Automated Djinn Intellect), quickly forces its living cargo to awaken and make landfall, harrying them forth, declaring that it could not ensure the ship's stability in these Dream-infested lands. The bleary-eyed occupants soon arrive on the shores of a dark and seemingly arid land with the ship no where in sight, though precious supply containers have luckily been deposited alongside them.
  • Dark: Mysterious purple-skinned figures that roam in the night are discovered as inhabitants of this world, it seems a mutual equilibrium between the people are created and tensions between them have both led to avoidance. It seems the migrants, weren't the only one here like they hoped.

OK, now that we've completed our current Focus, I hand over the position of Lens to micelus, who will select a new Focus and create either a Period/Event/Scene or two (with one nested in the other). In the meantime, Roboson may update his Legacy with any item (be it a person, a concept, an item, a nation, or anything else, really) from the last Focus.

The book suggests that we take a short break to discuss what we liked or found fascinating without giving away what we're planning on doing next. For myself, I liked the detail put into the characters during the scene and finding out just how the world came to freeze and need an afterlife in the first place.

Focus: What did the settlers escape from and how?

Timeline:
  • Light: Curious members of the purple-fleshed race eventually make contact with the settlers and in time, a kind of mutually intelligible communication is set up between the two groups. It comes to past that the Augerines, as they called themselves, were people of the Dream like those Outside were people of the Essence. Both groups mostly leave each other alone, save for the curious.
Dark: The settlers from the Generation Ship are enslaved.
Light: Renewed hope for escape unites the people, bringing them closer together than ever.
