WALK-TALK Radio: Transistors are still the future! MXETE may have ended up slightly bigger than planned, but that's okay. We have another use for transistors: radio. Our old radios need bulky vacuum tubes- our new radios will have svelte transistors! Meet the Wireless Audio Local Kommunicator-Transistor Assistance Lowers Kost Radio. A two-way radio you can hold in your hand, with better battery life than equivalent vacuum-tube-based units. "But transistors are expensive", they say. Tell that to the innovators of Mereth, and our low-cost labour just waiting to be exploited. We hear the distant land of 'Japan' is looking to become a leader in electronics? Not if Mereth can beat them to it!

Transistor radios are poised to plummet in price and size this year. Presumably we have the technology to build radios already; this revision is just replacing vacuum tubes with transistors, basically.

It really should have been trivial to accomplish this. Our engineers are scratching their heads in a mix of confusion and frustration. One particularly nosy engineer had the gall to tell us that the three months allocated to "Innovative Acronym Solutions" were responsible. He was promptly demoted to maintaining the MXETE.

The Wireless Audio Local Kommunicator-Transistor Assistance
The WALK-TALK Radio is still competent for what we set out to do. It's a relatively small radio able to be fit into the palm of one's hand. It has a respectable range that should allow our forces to always stay in touch, it's made using transistors, and it works.

Our unfortunate setback takes the form of the newly-formed Union of Electronics Workers. As soon as we began looking for cheap competitive labor to build the WALK-TALKs, this union just popped into existence. In addition to ridiculous demands such as "humane work conditions", they also require insane salaries. Any attempts to break the union have been met with fierce and frankly just surprising amounts of resistance. The WALK-TALK would be cheap, but this union effectively makes the entire process Complex, raising it to Expensive.

The WALK-TALK costs 1 Ore and is Complex.

Your higher-ups forgot to submit the request earlier, and the importing will be done at the beginning of 1956 - whatever you import will arrive quick enough to be effective to base this year's designs off of. The next import decision will be in conjunction with the revision phase of 1956.

Fuels that don't need oxygen are the basis of rockets...and this is a really good fuel....

Shall Mereth be of into space?



Anyways, we can get the Sorraia (Though it's probably better to get the 20mm autocannon in case we want to develop a halfway decently-armed vehicle), though I'd also like to get us a jet fighter, preferably the Lightning Streak, because then we'll also rule the skies right from the start, or at least have a good basis for it.

Pretty sure we can't afford a jet fighter. As in, it'd be a National Effort. The autocannon would also be acceptable... perhaps better, even.

UT-56 Burrower: You want mad? We got mad. The Burrower is a medium-sized vehicle, tracked, the most notable feature of which is the large drill on the front. Not one of those comical pointy drills, because that would just be silly. No, it's one of those big flat round ones, like the ones used to dig tunnels. Broken up rock and dirt is pushed to the back of the vehicle, where it can either stay, closing the tunnel behind it, or be removed, creating a tunnel through which further troops and materiel can be moved.
The Burrower's main innovation are its GOFAST-burning engines, which enable it to move at a substantially faster pace than conventional tunnel-boring-machines. It can manage up to several miles per hour!
The Burrower requires a two-man crew. It has room in the back for half a dozen soldiers. An autocannon (Velociraptor) may be deployed above ground to clear the area of hostiles, although of course ideally the Burrower will not encounter any hostiles, emerging well behind enemy lines. When not digging through the earth, it moves at a moderate pace. It only has light armour, although the drill itself provides some protection from frontal fire.

All in all, I agree, the Mole-APC would give us fantastic mobility if it pans out, and the Velociraptor is more or less timeless.

I have serious doubts as to the usability and logic behind this tank, and am even more concerned about the stealth aspect of tunnel-drilling, and even more concerns about the stability of such tunnels.

AS-AC18: An advanced primer ignition autocannon, which ignites cartridge primers before the round is fully chambered. It fires the new, large, 20x100mm round, fed from a top-mounted 25 round C-shaped magazine with a powerful spring, usually armor piercing, about 600 times per minute. The weapon is quite large with a simple action but heavy barrel, weighing over 40 kilograms, and it requires being mounted to a carriage, foundation, or vehicle to fire with accuracy, although recoil is reduced by the nature of its action. It is dependent on a careful balance between the force of the shell and the force of the action, which means that different ammo types cannot be interchanged without recalibrating the gun. It has a terrifying ability to punch through armor and emplacements. Costs 3 ore due to its size and the size of its ammo.

A strange carrier-cargo ship from Forenia delivers everything relevant to the UF-AC-41 Velociraptor. We also know how to build the AS-AC18 as well.

Easy  (2+2)+1 = 5: Average

The UT-56 Burrower is essentially a heavily-modified commercial tunnel boring machine. The modification of the engine to accept GOFAST-Fuel, some general tweaks to the drill, the addition of armor, some cargo capacity, and other modifications have made it a competent military vehicle.

Underground, it moves at a Very Slow pace. Still leaps and bounds faster than what we started with. It also has much more freedom of movement underground, though it's still limited. It's digging through the earth, not flying through the air. Once aboveground, it moves at Moderate speeds thanks to the engine. Six soldiers and a small amount of equipment or just a moderate amount of equipment and no soldiers can fit in the back. The whole thing is of course airtight and pressure resistant down to Shallow depths and a simple hatch door allows men to exit from the back. Those in the cockpit disembark through the back as well.
We couldn't find anywhere to mount an autocannon, though. The entrance/exit makes one mounted there impractical, and other hatches for people to operate it from inside would compromise structural integrity.

We can't recommend any traversal in the tunnels created by the Burrower, however. They're prone to almost immediate collapse thanks to the complete lack of supports and the depth of the boring. The very brave can ride just behind the Burrower, though we really still don't recommend that.


The Burrower costs 3 Ore and 3 Oil, the GOFAST-fuel adding to its already expensive oil requirements.

A somewhat unexpected effect is the boon the Burrower has brought to our economy. Turns out having extremely efficient tunnel boring machines is great to the mining industry. We're managing to extract +1 Ore from our existing mines thanks to the Burrower. Though if we were to invest in some way of stabilizing the tunnels after the Burrower has passed through, preventing future cave-ins, we could greatly aid our military logistics. This would allow forces to move fairly quickly and unharmed through the tunnels, and we'd have tunnels to transport goods through, increasing TC.

The Cataphract is now Very Expensive, and before anything could be done with it the Velociraptor has decreased from Expensive to Cheap. (The Burrower is Expensive, but would have been Very Expensive if it didn't gain us more ore.)

ME-IU-56 Infantry Uniform
A pocket-loaded uniform with optional flak jacket (Vest with steel plates in the pockets) and a Stahlhelm-style steel helmet covered with the appropriate camouflage, comes in desert camo, snow camo, urban camo, jungle camo, and a forest/grasslands camo. It comes with a belt connected to a suspenders-like assembly capable of distributing weight more evenly across the shoulders, hips, and torso, allowing for our guys to carry everything, including the kitchen sink, when necessary. A set of binoculars is also available, as well as a backpack with a foldable entrenching tool and blanket/ghillie-cloak/advanced camouflage device.

MXETE 2.0

Using what we learned from the previous iteration of the MXETE along with the WALK-TALK (at least we have some more experience with transistors) this version of the MXETE aims to fix the bugs that were present in the previous version and cuts down on the awkward architecture and experimental components that made the MXETE so space inefficient. In addition, we've put in a request with the outreach team to hire some bright minds who were interested in working on the fastest thinking machine in the hemisphere to become a group of people who we now refer to as "computer theorists". They're paid to spend a lot of time in a room with some chalkboards to try and figure out new software and information protocols to squeeze the most performance we can out of our limited digital resources. Their ultimate goal was to create standardized systems within the computer, ones that were efficient and easy to use, to expedite the production of new and fearsome wartime technology like ciphers, artillery trajectories, telecommunications, and guidance systems.

Hopefully around this time we can refer our computer theorists to the work of George Bool to get some idea on how to make the most out of our binary basement friend.

Right. Any thoughts as to what Forenian thing to import this year?
Main problem with aircraft is that we either go hilariously out of date or accept a Very Expensive thing... (Most ICAR era Forenian planes cost 5 Ore, 4 Oil... Same as the Cataphract.) Doesn't matter if it's the Haast or the Thunderbird or the Lightning Streak or the outdated HAFB.
Ship wise, we either go with a NE Vodka or Zheleznogorod, or settle with the Archer(why?) or an Expensive Wasps Nest.
Vehicle wise we have the Salamander... And I think the Burrower is technically amphibious, due to being airtight and not needing an external source of oxygen for its engine (IE, it can probably trudge along the bottom of the river/lake/coastline). And the Salamander would be VE for us too.. Still, we could dip into even older vehicles I suppose...
We grabbed the latest iteration of the Deadliest Ray from the Cataphract (Although not as a stand-alone, if I recall right, but it is there to provide an example of when we make our own RADAR), so I suppose that leaves the choice between Blood Eagle and the SARUKH... With the Division of Unusual Chemistry we might be able to make some interesting ammo types for the SARUKH, I'd bet.
Or we could go with Tiger Armor. This is Soft Sci-Fi, so I believe Power Armor is on the table; and here's a good suit of practical infantry armor that can serve as a base for that.
Remember, we have 3 more things we can ask for.

Oh right, time for a design idea, although this was inspired by Madman's idea of sprayable fast-acting concrete. I struggled with this a bit, and it could use some touch ups... If one of you wants to rework the description, go ahead, you have my blessing
ME-CM-56 'Instant Roads'
The Division of Unusual Chemistry is set to work once again, to take up the task of making a Fast Acting Concrete solution, originally meant to serve to stabilize Burrower tunnels, but other potential uses abound.
Really, how it works is an unusual method: Instead of tampering with the normal concrete mix, an aerosol accelerator mixture consisting of very finely ground Calcium Nitrates as well as some more non-standard and potentially flammable substances is sprayed on the drying concrete, catalyzing the process and greatly enhancing the rate at which it sets to mere minutes at most, with only mild concerns for flammability! A spraying rig and tank trailer is attached to the back of the Burrower tanks, which sprays concrete onto new tunnel surfaces as it goes.

Just to offer some more possibilities...

Division of Unusual Biology
Thanks to the new funding generated by the successes of our previous projects, we can now afford to expand the Division of Unusual Chemistry with a new wing dedicated entirely to biochemistry at all scales. Walls laden with hundreds of thousands of agar wells are among the first things to greet the lucky visitor, and delving further into the facility will uncover such sights as the Unusual Mutagens Lab, the hermetically sealed Unusual Viriology Chamber, our state-of-the-art NMR unit, and, of course, at the far end of the building, the Unusual Behaviorology Department, home of the infamous Unusual Psychology Work Group. Although some, no doubt motivated by jealousy, have accused the Division of Unusual Biology of participating in "unethical research", our expert Ethics Council ensures that all reports submitted on unethical experiments are fully steganographically encrypted and, in case of necessity, printed on flammable paper.

ME-MG-56 "Heartpopper" Modular Gun
A paradigm shift beyond the foundational Stalwart and vaunted Heartstopper, the magazine-fed "Heartpopper" couples the incredible force of the latter with a streamlined receiver design and an array of interchangeable parts allowing the gun to be converted from a close-range handgun to a sniper rifle and most desirable configurations in between. Although in direct combat this convertibility is mostly limited to outfitting soldiers with field-appropriate capabilities ahead of time, the true power of the design is available to more covert operations where there is time to select exactly the right configuration for every shot.
