Well, Imperial Military Handgun or Imperial Military Small Arms(Light) may be a better term than Royal Army, since its not just intended for the army, yer aiming to be an empire, and in the case of smallarms, you will have other smallarms rounds so some form of distinction is required.

Or, for that matter, .286 IMC if yer not planning on any more .286 caliber rounds.

Hmmm... IMSAL sounds alright I guess, but Imperial just strikes a weird cord with me. We call our armed forces the Royal Army and Navy at this point, so it'd make sense for it to be named accordingly, at least until the next Arms Race where we could claim to be an Empire and change the convention.

Edit; Added .286 RASC and .286 PMGC as valid colloquial terms, and left official designation the same (R.286C01-RBT-PMG-90). Can further be classified as .286 Cheops to distinguish from future .286 cartridges, if any are made.

Very Hard: 4
.286 Cheops Personal Machine Gun Model 1901:
The Cheops Personal Machine gun model 1901, or CPMG 1901 for short is a small and light machine gun able to be fired by our soldiers, more specifically able to be fired while standing... However, the trigger is a bit sticky, and some force is needed to keep bullets pouring out of it, and sometimes force is needed to push the trigger back into place and stop it from firing. It also can overheat if the user isn't careful, which is made worse by the sticky trigger. Other then that, it is fairly fast firing and should be able to deal with unarmored targets up close quite well and is more accurate then our normal machine guns, although its still not going to win any contests for accuracy, being significantly worse then our rifles in the accuracy department as at the end of the day, its still a machine gun and still made for close range combat.

It is now the Revision Phase, the Pharoah is still extremely happy.

Not bad! Not bad! Could be better, but it's operational and does what it has to pretty darn good.

Now. I recommend we get spotting balloons and binoculars for our troops to increase artillery range - basically outclassing their own-, then steal project Horse to get their secret shit. Another option is just sabotaging this turn's design, or stealing it, for the same reason as Project Horse (might be project Horse, but we'd be betting, tho it's pretty sure they're still working on the same thing as last turn).

Taking out their MG will allow us to gain a foothold in the swamps much more easily.

As for a revision, we could bolster our artillery, or we can try fixing both the SMG and semi-auto rifle this turn as well, If we do that our infantry firepower will be magnified greatly.

I'd like to note that artillery has been noted as a deciding factor in our last two turns. We don't need to sabotage their MG, mostly because the Cheops should be better than it even with the sticky trigger. I'm thinking more along the lines of permanent contributions to the war. Stealing whatever Horse is would do just that.

Edit: Including revision ideas here.

For our artillery, we could go for a range extension with the use of spotting balloons and binoculars, which should effectively give us a huge advantage in land warfare as well as give our troops some warning of when the enemy is advancing towards us. Coupled with it are binoculars, which would be beneficial as heck to our officers and artillery crews, as well as our snipers - seeing as they have higher magnification than their scopes and allows for observers to aid them in aiming.

Toth-type Observational Kite Balloon
Following the limited observational range of flares limiting the Nafuni artillery’s effectiveness in the field, the military sought to extend the range at which an observer could reliably guide artillery and from safe conditions. Inspiration was drawn from the Europeans and their long usage of balloons, and relatively recently shaped balloons meant to stay stable and aloft even in adverse conditions.

The result is the Toth-type kite balloon - A 4 meter in diameter, 10 meter long aerodynamic balloon, comprising four inflatable bags filled with helium, a thick fabric envelope protecting the bags, a single rigid bar secured to, and extending through and to both sides of said bag, on whose two axis the bags are located; wings secured to, and outwardly projecting from opposite sides, respectively, of said bag and fastened to said bar; a flying wire, a wire rig connecting said flying wire with said bar on opposite sides of said bag, and a strut passed over said bag and fastened with its ends to said bar on opposite sides of said bag, giving it structural stability. Additional struts extend from the ends of the bar, to the front of the balloon, holding a metal basket holding the operators and their equipment, with flags and mirrors being the standard means of communication with artillery crews utilizing the 16×2.76” Wadjet Binoculars, two small lightweight hand-held telescopes mounted side-by-side and aligned to point in the same direction, allowing the viewer to use both eyes when viewing distant objects and giving the viewer an impression of depth.

Compared to a  conventional balloon which tends to drift down the wind and the harder the wind blows, the further the balloon drifts. This leans the tether over at an angle, pulling the balloon lower, whereas here the kite action lifts the balloon, counteracting this pull and holding the Toth in position. As the wind blows harder, the kite action lifts harder. This can provide good stability even in strong winds. In low or gusty winds a conventional kite can nose-dive, losing a large amount of height even if it recovers, but because of the Toth is buoyant it does not nose-dive and remains in position even in relatively still air.

Furthermore, another thing we could go for is a more potent HE charge, seeing as what we're currently using could use an update given the enemy's advance into TNT.

Anubis High Explosive Shells
Despite warnings from Neferu herself, Asimov continued his high-explosive research to find the most potent and effective charge for the army's high explosive shells. The result was a shell filled with 25% hexogen, possessing two times the explosive power of TNT per unit volume and one and a half times more per unit weight. The higher percentage of explosive material results in more, faster and smaller fragments, increasing the shell's effectiveness in the anti-personnel role and dealing more area damage overall.

Moving onto infantry, we could also revision the Vera into a functional rifle - potentially even allowing for the automatic action - to deal a one-two punch to their infantry, despite this not making much of an impact given our lack of artillery supremacy, or revision in a pistol, grenades and a new uniform standardization (all three together) to improve the effectiveness of our troops in a more soft manner.

Personally, I'd go for the observation balloons this turn seeing as the Cheops should be superior to their machine gun in suppressive fire and fighting at short range, while our rifles can deal with the rest, and having the upper hand in artillery would allow us to advance both in the swamp and in the villages seeing as their artillery has been noted as the only thing letting them keep the advance, negating our better infantry gear and much better defenses.

Hard: 4
Toth-Type Observational Kite Balloon & Wadjet Binoculars:
Our work with the Toth went fairly well. It is stable, able to go quite high up in the air, and most importantly, is able to let our spotters extend our artillery's effective range outside the enemy's. Using these balloons, we can reliably fire from 16,000 yd. Quite simply, its a balloon with a basket and room for about three people while offering very good visibility to the spotters thanks to its design. The cloth is fairly thick and has been tested (on the ground of course) that it can withstand a decent amount of bullets before deflating, although why or how it would get shot when so high is a slight mystery. There is one issue about the Toth however, or rather, the Wadjet Binoculars that come with it. The ones in charge of making the binoculars decided it would be a funny idea to just strap two of our Reseph-Vizier S1SSR 8x1.26' Scopes together and call it a day. This actually proved to be quite funny, at least to the pharaoh, who stated that it reminded her of what she was told the old engineers in training for Karikhita did by the spy we got from the two nations of Arnot. Costs 2 wood.

It is now the Battle Phase, the Pharaoh is still in quite the good mood, despite everything.

Battle Report 12, 1901
This year we worked on the Cheops Personal Machine Gun Model 1901, or the CPMG 1901. A light hand healed machine gun that can be deadly at close range and is slightly more accurate then our heavier machine guns. However, its trigger is very...stiff, and it tends to get stuck, usually when pulled to fire making conversation with ammo quite difficult. We also made the Toth-Type Observational Kite Balloon and binoculars, the balloon is able to go quite high in the sky and help with the detection of flares and enemy artillery from long range, increasing the range our artillery can fire at and still reliably hit things.

The Khanate has worked on two very interesting things this year, first of which is the Mogoi Torpedo, a fast warhead that propels itself under the water to strike and destroy the hulls of ships from under the waterline. The other thing they have worked on is an engine of sorts that goes into a Tos-Mori truck, the thing made for project horse, further description of such a design is listed below in the report of our spy's actions.

Battle Report, Naval combat: The fight at the sea started off fairly badly for us, our captains not expecting the enemies new underwater weapon. But, soon enough they wised up to their tricks and could tell when one was coming and how to evade them. Although it didn't really change much due to the fact they where mostly used by Luu's and at close range, but it helped. We still are able to deal with their ships with our guns quite handily but otherwise the torpedoes do damage and are a major threat, things have been made a bit more even, more then even, in fact the Karikhitans have a bit of an edge thanks to their torpedoes and took a advantage.

Battle Report, Mountains. Attackers, Karikhita: Presumably thinking their little advantage at sea is able to cut off our supplies enough to prevent a repeat of last year, the Karikhitan's have attacked here once again. They where right that it made things more difficult for us to defend, but they where wrong to think it was enough to push us back. They where able to advance and see slightly more success then last year, but for the same reasons we arrive at the same result, and as such, we are able to push them back and defend the mountains once again from their antics. [Nafuna 4/4, Karikhita 0/4]

Battle Report, Villages. Attackers, Nafuna, Karikhita: The war here just got a lot more interesting over here. Here is where the first use of the Toth type observation balloon is seen, and where our new masses of artillery are unleashed upon our foe. With our new masses of artillery and our better range over the Karikhitans own guns, we are able to do effective counter battery fire along with ground support for our own troops safely out of their own effective range. Our new machine gun also sees some service here and is decent enough, although most soldiers just use the good old 1900 rifle, wanting to keep their accuracy and range along with not having to deal with the "Gods damned terrible trigger that breaks and gets stuck in the firing position every time my finger so much as twitches" of course, this is an exaggeration from one of our soldiers, but the point still stands that most soldiers here forgo it in exchange for a full machine gun or the rifles. With our artillery up and running however, and our better rifles put to better use with the new support, we are able to hold the line against the Karikhitan's and push them back to the hills, although with heavy losses. [Nafuna 4/4, Karikhita 0/4]

Battle Report, Swamps. Attackers, Nafuna: The battle here is brutal and where our personal machine guns are most used. The soldiers have a love hate relationship with the thing, love in the fact it can save their life and kill a number of enemies in front of them, hate in how damn unreliable the thing is here. Its issue here in the swamps is magnified with all the mud, and anything short of cleaning and polishing it to a shine will keep it working and firing, still its fairly effective when it does work, but the amount of times soldiers have had to try and get the trigger unstuck before reloading are painful to say the least. Our artillery is also able to make a bit of minor assistance, but flares are a bit harder to spot...Sadly, just barely are we pushed back. If our machine gun didn't have such issues, we would have taken it for sure. [Nafuna 0/4, Karikhita 4/4]

Espionage Report, Nafuni Mission 6
Our new agent was sent over to Karikhita for a few weeks to gather information on project horse. He managed to find out what it was and how a person named Tsaasen, owner of Tsaasen motors, worked on a brand new engine for project horse. He then proceeded to get a job as a security guard there for the night shift and slowly got use to the place and learned the patrols of everyone who worked there at night and what their jobs where. On his last day of the week, he entered the building, knocked out a guard from behind who had the keys to the room holding the designs, entered said room, then had to deal with a guard who knew someone was in there and knocked them out as well, and then engraved a stone nearby before escaping in a fully operational Tos Mori truck. He managed to get the truck on a ship from a relative and arrived in a nafuni port on a old water wolf boat where the designs and the truck where delivered here and placed in these files here.
We should be able to use this for our own work, and with the working model, it should be very easy to get our own properly made designs of it, of course, we could always try to sneak in some improvements as well.

Outside world and Internal affairs: After his work, our good old ex Karikhitan engineer seemed to just...vanish, he was given a few gifts by the Pharaoh herself personally for his work but after he took them he seemed to have gone away for greener pastures...We also, thanks to our industrialization, have managed to drill into the Oil in the jungle. In other news Queen Victoria's funeral takes place in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, England. In Bremen an assassin attempts to kill Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rob train of forty thousand dollars at Wagner, Montana. The first claimed powered flight, by Gustave Whitehead in his Number 21 in Fairfield, Connecticut, happened. And Guglielmo Marconi attempts to send the first transatlantic radio signal, from Poldhu in Cornwall to Newfoundland, Canada using a 500-foot (150 m) kite-supported antenna for reception.

It is now the Design Phase, Neferu still seems happy, but not as happy as before.

« Reply #492 on: January 08, 2018, 05:55:16 am »

Alright, we only need a revision to fix the Cheops and the Vera. Once those are rolled out in full force Karikhita is fucked :D

Anyway, a couple of designs since there's quite a lot we can do with the new weapons and truck falling in to place.

1902 Royal Army Uniform + Model 1902 Grenade + Model 1902 Handgun
Intended to enhance the performance of our troops in a myriad of minor ways, the 1902 goes beyond the flashy uniforms of the last century. Out goes the brightly coloured ornate uniforms, and in with plain-colour uniforms in theatre specific drab colours. The uniform is also updated, the helmet being made out of molybdenum steel that resemble coal scuttles (Effectively, a stahlhelm) to protect against artillery shrapnel and with the tunic of the uniform being outfitted with loop & pockets ideally suited for carrying magazines for our current main arms in service, massively increasing the amount of ammo a soldier can easily carry for their weapon. Additional tools & bags are also produced, to allow a soldier to more comfortably carry a couple of days rations, entrenching tools for our engineering battalions more more easily dig in and a combat knife to ensure our troops always have something to kill the enemy with; being a 6 inch, single edge blade that's broad enough to both cut and stab, and a small handguard to keep the user's hand from slipping down the knife.

Additionally, using the extra time afforded to them, our designers have come up with a couple of weapons to make our troops assaults more effective. The 1902 grenade is a simple explosive device that's meant to be lobbed into an enemy trench or position. The high explosive top of the device is covered in a simple steel shell and mounted on a wooden handle, the timed fuze of the grenade being activated by a cord that runs through the handle and and terminates in a ring which the use pulls to activate the device. The fuze operates on a timer, detonating four seconds after the cord is pulled.

Finally, to round out our arsenal, the Model 1902 Handgun. Designed as a sidearm assigned to our officers and rear-line personnel the M1902 uses the same .286 Cheops round as our SMG, in a 14-round double stack magazine that uses a blowback mechanism for re-chambering the next round. A short, relatively concealable & easy to use sidearm

Selket Class Light Armoured Cruiser
In an effort to being the Royal Nafuni navy into modernity, the Selket Class is intended to be Nafuna's first all-steel, turbine driven craft. Mounting two new geared steam turbines, and an armoured hull of steel measuring about an inch thick the Selket is planned to be faster than the Sobek. Dispensing with the casemate guns, the Selket is armed with six Tauret cannons in armoured turrets, one at the aft and the two in the fore mounted in an innovative superfiring arrangement, the second turret being able to fire over the first enabling greater firepower out of the front of the craft.

Amenei-Class Nushunefu
The Amenei represents a further evolution of the Sobek class that has served the Nafuni royal navy for all these years and aims to utilize a geared steam turbine as it's powerplant - effectively going faster, being more armored and possessing a larger armament than the current Sobek. The ship is propelled with a powerful, large geared steam turbine driving two shafts, each one connected to one three-bladed and one four-bladed propeller (to the center). The four-bladed propellers provide good handling at lower speeds or rough seas, fuel economy and durability, while the three-bladed propellers provide the ship with adequate acceleration to reach speeds surpassing those of any ship at sea to date (up to an astounding 21 knots). The ship continues the trend of using an armored coal bunker and geared steam turbine compartment (both to stop shells and to be used to lock it down in case of a fire), which are protected with another two and a half inches of armor. It features a total of 8x Tauret cannons in double turrets, 4x Djer-Khenthap cannons in single mounts, and two double turrets, which are manually operated, hydraulically assisted and rest on a circular rail for traverse, on the fore and aft mounting 8" Ramses cannons, featuring all the nice aiming devices our artillery crews enjoy, as well as sixteen Sekhmet 1.6-inch Revolver Cannon mounts on the main deck, in the fore, aft, starboard and port position to help against enemy ships that get within firearm firing range, or against the older Karikhitan ships. The ship is entirely clad in steel, dispersing with the ironclad layout of the Sobek, with a 5.5" thick belt, 2" of deck armor, as well as 5" on the turret's front, sides and rear and 8" on the conning tower, while secondaries have 3" of frontal, back and side armor. All this armor renders the ship virtually impervious to enemy fire, since the Sobek could only be mission killed with enemy ships shooting at the back of it's turrets, where their armor was thinnest, at short range. All turrets share the same top armor of 2.5". Keeping with tradition, the ship's cannons can also be taken out to provide a second role - as a resource transport, in which it should be much more effective as it's larger than the Sobek measuring 504 by 72 feet. For those interested, the ship weights 9,932 tons and has a complement of 610 sailors, with a targeted traverse speed for it's turrets of between 10 and 12°/s, enabling it to aim it's guns at potential targets much quicker than what they're capable of matching.

This design also installs a similar turbine engine in the Sobek Class Nushunefu, enabling it to reach speeds of around 23 - 24 knots, and allowing it to act as a light cruiser to harass enemy forces, while still being decently armed and armored. This combination would allow both ships to outrun anything the Karikhitan navy currently houses and would thus allow our ships to much more effectively evade their torpedoes, therefore buying us an advantage at sea.

Ear of Horus 'Eoch' Electric Telegraph
The Ear of Horus, or the Eoch for short, represents a single-circuit telegraph that works by pushing the operator key down to complete the electric circuit of the battery. This action sends an electrical signal across a wire to a receiver at the other end. All the system needs to function is a key, a battery, and a wire between stations for the receiver, with poles being used for land systems. To communicate, the Nafuni Telegraph System will utilize Morse code as per standard international convention. This should increase the rate at which information is transfered inside Nafuna and on the battlefield up to a point where it's effectively instantaneous, increasing artillery range and planning speed, and disabling the enemy from intercepting written commands as the telegraph lines are a physical connection between two operators.

I'm not sure which one of his designs Taricus would prefer, but I've listed them above so we have an actual votebox. I agree that we need to fix our guns in the revision, so as to get two reliable main armaments in a single turn, and so we can actually put the Cheops to full use in every theatre.

Another option for this turn is a telegraph to enable us to more effectively arrange logistics, potentially increase the rate of industrialization and further increase artillery range to our maximum so far! (a 50% increase from what the Toth has allow us this turn~!)

Apophis Armoured Chariot
This vehicle was put together after investigating the Tos-Mori Truck. We have taken the W3L-Mk1 Engine and built our own four-wheeled chassis around it. Then we added a manually cranked turret and armed it with a Carrera S3M2. The gun is aimed with a the aid of a scope. The driver is set back next to the turret allowing us to more heavily armour the front of the vehicle and make use of a closeable armoured flap for visual access. When closed the driver needs to rely on directions from the gunner. The rest of the vehicle is otherwise lightly armoured. The wheels are left unarmoured and designed for ease of maintenance. We envision this vehicle filling the role of the chariot as a scout and skirmisher, so the crew may benefit from being equipped with binoculars. Entry and exit from the vehicle is via a door in the rear.
