The Noble Houses of Falas (IC)
« on: August 26, 2017, 12:09:59 pm »

Spring of 351

In the spring of year 351 the Second Age began. The Dynasty of the Last King's iron grip over the Islands of Falas had lasted hundreds of years, longer than humanity had thought to record its history. Yet now, the power that once held the darkness at bay has cracked and crumbled. The bastion of strength that protected humanity has faltered, and dark things begin to slither through the dark once more. Some cling to the royal strongholds, others simply perish in the cold and dark night, but a few brave souls gather their power and renew the fight against the weird and the wild.

The first to secede from the Kingdom was the country of Adjilia. Located on the Southwestern section of West Falas, this city was built upon a large river basin. The rivers are large and deep, fed by streams and surging rapids that feed from the mountains. The city itself is fairly spread out, making it appear rather large, but this is mostly a result of the terrain and necessity, not immense population. However, the surrounding area has many towns, making the kingdom of Adjila fairly populous when considered in its entirety. The kingdom settled on a meritocracy, where those who contribute most hold the greatest sway over the governance of the area. The two leaders Erin Quill and Sadie Hertz work hard to ensure the prosperity of the region.

In the spring of the same year, another country also withdrew from the Kingdom. The rich Morosian League found that taxes to a government which offered them nothing were putting a strain on their finances,
and took it upon themselves to vertically integrate government into their economy. The small kingdom had always been one of the jewels of the kingdom, located on the narrow passage from the eastern sea to the western sea, coin passed through the League like blood through a heart.

The merchant republic enjoys a warm climate, well suited to the production of wine (one of the few goods that the Morosian League produces for itself) and has some of the most delectable wine in the world. While the actual number of citizens is low compared to other nations, a vast number of foreigners are constantly changing guests in the city.

Great beasts have begun roaming the earth, stirring from their holes, smelling the sickness of the Empire. The fledgling kingdoms must now not only govern themselves through this time of revolution, but also learn to deal with some large issues...

Adjilia seceeded for a very specific reason: the Kingdom was far too strict in its maintenance of magic throughout its lands, and Adjilia chafed under the strict orthodoxy. The wanted to learn the magical arts, to align with the fae beings rather than fear and attack them. They couldn't do that with Falasian Dragonslayers and Witchhunters constantly patrolling their lands, so they cut off ties with the old and ailing empire and removed the Dragonslayers and Witchhunters from their lands.

As a symbol of goodwill, Adjilia includes one of their prototype airships in their first shipment to the Morosian League, with the message and expectation being one of mutual benefit and prosperity. Our ships bring about 100 gold worth of various products, including stone, foodstuffs, and works of artifice.

The militia continue guarding the wilderness, the scholars (as well as Erin Quill) do their research into mutually beneficial relationships with the local dragons, and Sadie Hertz conducts trade negotiations with the Morosian League.

A second workshop was also constructed on and in one of the local mountains, for the purpose of increasing national wealth, and an Engineer was trained, to help with large-scale construction projects.

Also, Adjilia has a harbor. Of course it has a harbor. Probably half the population lives in it's incredibly complex and labyrinthine series of docks and harbors.

Secession is such an ugly word. The Morosian League had long held a special position within Falas. Per the ancient agreement, they agreed to pay taxes to the royal family in exchange for protection; as such, the withdrawal of the Royal Guard from the country could be considered a breach of contract. Moros is not seceding, it was never a part of the kingdom to begin with.

At least, that is Dneth's story, and he is sticking to it. And no one was really complaining, certainly not after the royal tariffs were abolished.

People were complaining, however, about Greater Sea Hermits trampling their hovels and eating their grapes. Herding the animals was next to impossible. Moving people out of their path would be disruptive to the economy. Exterminating the armoured behemoths would take siege equipment- expensive siege equipment. A problem with no easy solution.
...unless one looks outside of the confines of Moros. Careful inquiry led to contact with the High Lord of Isteria, who was rumoured to employ an alchemist of considerable skill. A merchant was dispatched, with the public mission of establishing a trade route- and the less public mission of acquiring Greater Sea Hermit Repellant, in exchange for a sizeable pile of coin.

Despite these countermeasures, there would no doubt be some whose homes would be destroyed by an errant crustacean. Fortunately, the displaced villagers had somewhere to go. Faced with the prospect of food shortages if the Kingdom decided to curtail exports, a program of farm expansion was undertaken. Smallholds were purchased, grouped together, and sold off with the condition that at least 80% of the farmland be used to produce food. Disused farmland- of which Moros had a fair amount, on account of most food having been imported until now- was cleared of rubble and overgrowth, and sold to settlers in large batches at bargain-bin prices- again with conditions mandating the growth of food crops.
Additionally, a portion of the fleet was dispatched to patrol fishing waters, allowing for Moros to reap the traditional bounty of the sea once more, free from fear of pirates or sea monsters attacking their undefended fishing vessels.
These consolidated farms and fishing expeditions would soon begin producing enough food to keep the fickle citizens of Moros fed and happy.

Ship: Protect Fishing
Merchant: Establish Trade Route with Isteria, carry 100 coins to pay for Sea Hermit Repellant
Build Medium Farm (-500 coin)

Dneth, having taken care of domestic matters for the moment, leaves the day-to-day running of the country to his capable advisors. His is a more proactive spirit- idleness does not lead to riches.
He boards a ship- the Pride of Moros- filled to the brim with wine and other miscellaneous trade goods, and sets sail for the nation of Adjilia. All manner of Adjilian gadgetry could once be found in the marketplaces of Moros, and it shall be once again.

Leader on Ship: Establish trade route with Adjilia. Bring 100 coins worth of cargo (mostly wine) to trade.

On the topic of secession, Icthos, and therefor Ahara, had little choice. Morosian secession would have meant the loss of one of their major trade partners, as well as a close neighbour, being inaccessible at best, and hostile at worst. Not this change was exactly unwelcome to Ahara. At times it felt as though the empire was stifling the culture of the Icthosi people, and Ahara felt this constraint more than most.

She began her rein of an independent kingdom ensuring that her stated reason for secession, Icthos' relationship with Moros, would be preserved, and wrote a letter to Dneth of Moros ((PM incoming)). After drafting the document and sending it off, she sought to ensure their stock of fish would be plenty for any trade by Ordering on of her ships to work the fishery/expand it if need be. In hopes of having some rarer fare, and perhaps a trophy to two, she Ordered her harpooner crew, with the other ship, to search the ocean between Icthos and Moros for large game, but only of a manageable size. No need to take down a titan of any sort, but a whale or massive shark would make a pretty prize.

Ahara's personal actions were not publicly visible ((PM incoming)).

Grauerstein has long languished under the old Kingdom, having to pay tribute to useless 'nobles', and allowing the Witchhunters execute potentially very useful members of society, all for a paltry level of protection that they could achieve themselves.

While the loss of food imports was painful, it was deemed acceptable, and Grauerstein's Stone Fleet has been seen conducting fishing operations in the strait between Grauerstein and Icthos. Military ships have been sighted protecting this endeavor, but they've also been seen laying out fishing nets themselves.

As for what else the nation did, only those privy to the nation's actions know. (PM from me too)

In the far northwest, there is a cold land. Long deemed inhospitable to the town dwellers of the rest of the Kingdom, a lone castle is inhabited by the Lord of Bronnadren, who rules over the native tribesmen, and is responsible for keeping the beasts of the ancient forests away from civilization.

As the King lost his mind, Bronnadren was slowly forgotten, kept alive only through the iron will of its lord and a note on some pieces of paper, telling the commander of the Royal Guard where to send his troops.

Now, the King may as well be dead, and the Guardsmen have left or died. Only a few remain, having betrayed the orders of the Commander, who is calling forces to himself in case he has a chance to take the throne. Those few now act as the commanders of the Rangers, which are levies of troops from local tribes, skilled at archery, hunting, and beast-killing.

With the Guard gone, the Lord Aranui no longer professes full loyalty to the King. Taxes are sent no longer, though diplomatic contact is maintained, for now. He is called the Faithful for a reason. But without support from the King, he will not waste the effort and money to support the King.

The beasts have pushed the Bronnadrennen from their former westernmost lands, and threaten to overrun the rest of the hold. Giant spiders, goblins, and worse have been seen in the forests, and the loss of the Guard meant that forays into those forests became suicide.

The soldiers push back, however, and the lord of the hold is often on the front lines with them. Units of rangers stalk behind the lines, making sure no large monsters make it past the soldiers' defenses, and keeping down the numbers of goblins, small spiders, pests, midsized dragons, and deer.

The ships went out, several times, delivering diplomats and trade brokers across the Kingdom. Or what was left, anyway. They carried offers of trade to every new nation with even a single port.

Bronnadren is open to trading, offering to send shiploads of hides and leathers in exchange for coin.

In far Eastern Isle surround by untamed wilderness to south, mild neighbor to east, Yhillin rightful withdrawal from old kingdom after years of their power waning there, power being maintained by Monarch and various of administrators helped smooth the transition, allowing the country to follow the path towards it's rightful destiny. Well that is how Lady Eris claims it to be with not one adviser disagreeing to such a notion.

Assuming the throne after purging various of noblemen who opposed her and with her mentor help, she is able to function as beacon of stabilization for the country at time when stability is most needed. With many commoners assuming various administrative positions which was needed to recent lost of many of country noblemen, many still have bad feelings for their ruler due to taking the throne by force and being a warlock herself.

The biggest headache on her plate was the local forest wildlife acting up, normally the forests of the country nature spirits always kept things calm, but due to events unknown to her the trents have being causing a ruckus leaving many farmers to petition her to deal with this problem. Shaking her head at thoughts of citizens being turned into trees as given her quite stressful day.

Yhillin has open it's country to receive trade delegates, while is also offering to send ships full of fruits and food.

Build one Small Orchard(or is it vineyard) Farm and one Small Farm outside Ard-Norrwick(600)
Build Mine in Eastern Mountains(400)

Send the soldiers out to protect villages at risk of trent attack and to show villagers sign of protection.

With discussing with her mentor(warlock) about the local Trent problem, she decided to send him and diplomats to help meditate situation with the trents and forest spirits, using means of magic and diplomacy.

Looking to the east Lady Eris travels by land to Fjarrland the part of Skkoland on the Eastern Isle to discuss border details and marching rights through each country. While traveling there she sents ship filled with food and fruit to trade between Skkoland.

Spoiler: Sindar, turn 1 (click to show/hide)

Sindar broke from the Empire with a heavy heart, but also prepared to face the world alone thanks to the foresight of its leaders and cultural adaptation. Their lands were blessed and bountiful, and they would preserve this beauty as best as they could, alongside keeping the borders clear from Trolls and other beasts. In the coming months, they would focus further into development and self-sustenance, and news from other 'nations' was a boon for their navy, being old transport ships that ferried their ancestors to the lands they were in. These would be retrofitted into trade ships for the moment, but their ancient designs were to undergo study to aid any seaworthy development.

Summer of 351

As word spread of countries retreating from the kingdom, a sudden rush for nationhood overtook Falas. More than half a dozen new kingdoms were all created in the spring of 351. One of the driving forces behind this was the sudden prevalence of great beasts in the region. Each of the nations were suddenly faced with new, unknown, or otherwise dangerous issues. Scholars would argue for centuries as to whether or not the death of the Last King allowed for the monsters to return, or if the two events shared an underlying cause....

Trade between the many nations began to take root, and trading routes were quickly established, much to the benefit of those who shared them. Iron became as common as gold, and mining increased across the world. The world had become stranger and dangerous, so man reacted as man always does, by taking up arms...

Adjilia faced it's dangers by constructing a second workshop in order to produce more trade goods and other metal objects. They also erected one of the first trade routes with the Morosian League, sending some of their workshop's goods across the sea, which it is currently located. Scholars researched with vigor, the subject of their studies a national secret. An engineer was hired and trained as well. What could those Adjilians be planning.

The Morosian League almost immediately became the center of the world economy, they sent a merchant North to Isteria, and a ship west to Adjilia. This coupled with their nearby trade partner of Iethos made the League a central point in the new world economy. Their leader, Dneth personally travels to Adjilia to bring wine and begin trading agreements with the nation. While they are away, increased farming and fishing are underway. A few weeks into the season a ship loaded to the brim with hermit crab repellent arrives in Moros. This foul smelling concoction, keeps the hermits away from areas in which it is used. Most hermits are successfully redirected away from towns and cities.

Icthos followed its neighbors in succession, though it was not a difficult decision to make. The prude rule of the Kingdom had stifled the area and upset the people for far too long. Now Icthos has taken to the seas, catching fish and large beasts alike. The future appears bright for this nautical nation.

A strange sight is seen in the ocean between Grauerstein and Icthos. Ships made of a strange stone float across the water in a display that seems to spit in the face of both the gods and physics. Yet, float those stone ships do. They are seen fishing, rather successfully, in the area. Meanwhile, little is heard from the interior of the nation.

No word is heard from Isteria. Surely they must be doing something, but no news escapes their borders.

The hinterland known as Bronnadren was one of the first abandoned by the King, but among the last to resend their loyalties. Life changed little for the people who live here, as their lives had always been fairly Hobbsian. Nasty, brutish, and short. Though, the actual culture and people is strong and resilient, a perfect example of the triumph of mortal man. A ship heads out to do trade with the rest of the world, while the rest of the country deals with an infestation of large proportions.

Among those who withdrew from the kingdom, Sindar was one who was conflicted about such an action. Yet, change was necessary. New dangers lurked in unexpected places, yet for the most part, the known dangers were kept at bay. A ship is sent to Adjilia to trade iron for coin.

Yhillin is by and large one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Its colors bright, the sights, sounds, smells, and people are all pleasing to the senses. It is a bastion of culture, color, and freedom. It has shaken off the yoke of the Last King, and has conquered by a powerful sorceress. Although, many common folk fear and hate their new queen for her dark powers. Similarly, it seems so to does the nature spirits in the area. Although the exact results of that interaction are not public knowledge. Although it is safe to say, there is more than one way to deal with trents... A newly constructed mine sends iron to Skkoland to trade while Lady Eris herself goes to meet with the leader of the country.

No word is heard from Ligoria. Surely they must be doing something, but no news escapes their borders.

No word is heard from Skkoland. Surely they must be doing something, but no news escapes their borders.

The summer of 351 was plagued with a host of terrors of such variety and unsuality that many at the time believed the world was descending into chaos. A whole host of terrors affected the vary livelihood of the people of Falas. It was during this period that the new rulers solidified their prowess and earned the titles they had claimed in the previous season...

"Pleasure doing business with you"

Having concluded his discussion with the leadership of Adjilia, Dneth returns to his ship. Some of those who came stay behind, to establish an enclave on the outskirts of the city.

Sailing home, Dneth pens several letters for his underlings back in Moros, to be delivered by a Homing Albatros. He writes of many things, including an order to have more ships put to sea in service of Moros, and for a trade route to be established with the land of Yhillin, whose capital almost rivals Moros in grandeur (in Dneth's opinion). He also orders a unit of condottieri to march north, to aid Isteria who aided them the season prior. There are other issues to be addressed, but who knows what they may be?

"Get off your vacation loving ass and do your job! Why did you even take a vacation now anyway with the Trolls on the move?!" Those were some of the words said by Eckhart Klein, Grauerstein's Master of Logistics to the current Master General. This serious blunder has rendered many on the Council of Masters wondering if perhaps the Master General isn't the best of the best at military leadership anymore...

In other news, Eckhart Klein has started a massive refugee re-organization program, to help comfortably house and feed the thousands of refugees displaced by troll attacks. Also, in the strait between Icthos and Grauerstein even greater numbers of the Stone Fleet has been sighted, some on a direct course for Icthos, but most continuing to fish.
