Alright, I've got my scrap paper, pencil, and calculator. I'm going to do some actual calculations based on the current prices described by the DF wiki, including the increases in price created when an item is enhanced/encrusted in a certain way with a certain material. I probably won't finish tonight, and when I do I'm going to post the calculations before I pull up the actual plan. It's time for me to prove that I wear this broker's feather for a reason.

Edit: oh wait, do we know if the swords have wooden handles? If they do, the elves won't accept them.

Edit again: okay, I have the general gist of how this works now. But there is some things I need to clear up with how true to the game we want to be. The main issue with my plan is that rings and goblets are the same value. You can always make three goblets from one bar of material, but a ring as a chance for 1:1 up to three rings per bar. Obviously, this isn't entirely realistic. If we were to make a ton of rings for only one bar of gold we would make far more money off of it than selling the bars themselves or as goblets. Seeing as how one solid gold bar could easily make, say 50 bars in reality, this should be possible. The ring has a base value of 10, multiplied by the material value of gold (which is 30), multiplied by the quality. If Frost was able to make the rings at least -ring- quality that would be a multiplier of 2. each ring would be worth approximately 600 urists. In addition to this, we could encrust the rings with our trash gems. This addition would be added onto the base value of the ring (600). The base value of a modification is 10, multiplied by the material (value of gems goes by quality sections: x2, x3, x10, x15, x20, x25, x30, x40, x60), I can do further calculations if I am given our stock of available gems (damn, I wish we had a book keeper), multiplied by the quality of the encrusting. So say we have at least a good amount of gems in the third quality section (x10, which is most gems except the worst of the worst), and with our current complete lack of skill of gem encrusting, each modification to a ring would add at least 100 urists of value to each ring. This would get us up to around 35000 urists from just that one bar of gold and the gems. In addition, if we were to stud the weapons and armor with gold before we sold them (for say, a quarter of a bar of gold each) we could add at least 300 urists of value to each item, not counting Frost's adept skill at the all the metal smithing types. I will do further calculations tomorrow, but I would like to see people's stance on this issue.

OOC : I voted to seize the slaves, but I'll be happy with a grotesque show of unbridled violence too ! Buying slaves from a group of people that will kill us all if we cut trees is just wrong to me (and certainly to Chenda).
Also Monitor, it's all cool, take your time; real life always come first

Well, the problem with seizing the slaves is that it doesn’t DO anything to benefit animal men in the long run, and elves will go to war with us.

Vlakoth suggests that we get the caravan's lumber, so Vlakoth can make beds and other useful stuff, but definitely no stakes

Vlakoth then stares into the distance emotionally, mourning that he would be reduced to this, from the lofty position he once held.

Quote
Along wit' the caravan, sum migrants came in... A rugged-looking human swordman, a pale dwarf and two beastmen. Huh, is it just me or does dat dwarf look familiar?...

Vlakoth spends some time getting re-acquainted with his possible/potential friend Goden Relichushed, knowing that a good network of social relationships is vital for accusing other people of your murders a smooth-sailing life.

On that note, Vlakoth tries to get into contact with whoever the miner here is, so we can get to work digging deeper. Hopefully even this forsaken place has some impossible extensive cavern networks with fungi trees?

Having little need for sleep, as a deathless vampire with his great endurance, Vlakoth spends most nights wandering the ice-fields looking for undead to control warn the fortress about.

He invites one of the elves to join him on his moonlit stroll, in the name of improving dwarf-elf relations. Sadly, the elf is sucked bone-dry to momentarily slake Vlakoth's endless thirst falls down a ice crevice, and a sudden blizzard shows up and conveniently removes all trace of him. Truly tragic. Vlakoth is heartbroken.

Oh, look. Vlakoth went murderous. Although why would an elf go on a walk with a strange, pale dwarf carrying an axe? And wouldn’t it be incredibly suspicious even if it did, by some miracle, work?

If Kiam finds out, they’ll probably try to jail you. Shame they don’t know. As an ex-adventurer, expect them to be suspicious of foul play, but unlikely to accuse you (optimism is not always a great trait). But this does look rather suspicious (and increases likelihood of war. Joy).

I honestly don't expect the "get elf to go somewhere alone with me" plan to work, but it's worth a shot I guess.  :)

As to it being suspicious, yes very suspicious.

Well, there goes the thought of a benevolent vampire friend. I have a LOT I want to say about this situation and what I think our course of action should be, but creating a plan for best using our wealth is my priority now. Frost, it's probably going to fall upon you to make a good amount of high quality goblets or rings (it doesn't really matter what, all useless trade trinkets are worth the same base value, just make what you think is the most conservative with our gold). If anyone wants to step up and try to encrust them with gems, that would help.
Alright, so it's three goblets per bar. Supposedly three rings per bar, but we could probably make a lot more rings out of a bar than that.
Gold Goblet=300
-Gold Goblet-=600
+Gold Goblet+=900
*Gold Goblet*= 1200
(triple bar symbol)Gold Goblet(triple bar symbol)=1500
(masterwork symbol)Gold Goblet(masterwork symbol)= 3600
With 16 bars of gold, that sets us at a minimum of 14400, and a maximum of 172800. We could easily buy everything from this caravan with only putting a small dent in our fortune. With this information, we shouldn't even put our weapons and armor on the table, plus I could probably sell the gold items for a premium because the elves have no way of refining gold on their own. After we buy what we want we should politely ask the elves to not bring slaves servants again the next year, because it is a touchy topic for... political reasons. Also, we should inform them that a few members of our fort are feeling a bit... resentful about a few things, and are likely to take their frustrations out on the caravan if they aren't careful. I'm going to be laying out the full plan tonight, but I felt that these important points needed to be put out there before the situation gets more volatile than it already is.

Yay money!

Now we just have to hope that the elves aren’t foolish enough to go on a walk in the middle of the night with a strange pale dwarf. Even they can’t be that foolish. Hopefully. If it does work, pay them gold and blame it on Vlakoth being a fool (but, since nobody knows it, not a vampire). Since the elves might want the body back, search for it. But mostly hope the elves aren’t foolish. And that Goden figures out the truth.

Also, poor Kiam. They recently considered that vampires don’t have to be evil and now we have an evil vampire. Should have just went with drinking animal blood.

Meanwhile, Kiam attempts to meet everyone.

Edit: Are the people voting for pointless violence even part of the fortress...?

ALRIGHT! It's time for THE PLAN. I'm sure no one is going to even bother listening I hope I have your attention so I can help get the fort through this crisis with maximum benefit. First of all, I would like to beseech all of you that we let these elves pass through peacefully. If worse comes to worst we can always politely ask them to leave after we finish trading. No matter what, I think we should ask them to not bring slaves servants next year. In addition to most people's hatred of elves and the temptation to yell "HEY, LETS GO KILL THOSE LOSERS OVER THERE WITH THE WOODEN SWORDS AND ARMOR", the addition of slavery to the mix was enough to set a good amount of people over the edge. With that being said, we should figure out what we want and get it quick. With our newly calculated wealth we could easily buy anything we want at the cost of maybe 3 bars of gold. Frost, how much gold we spend on this deal will mostly be based on how high quality your works are and what trinkets you decide to make. It doesn't really matter that much though, as long as they vaguely resemble something we're in the money. With that being said, there is no need to sell the armor and weapons, so we can keep them and figure out if the armor fits anyone.

As for what we should buy, I'd say just what we feel like getting. Most people agree that we NEED to acquire all three animal men. Once we do that they should be granted citizenship. I'm not sure whether they'll accept this newfound freedom, or be stuck in their ways of "we live to serve". Those habits will be worked out of in time, until then all we can do is treat them as normal citizens. The snailman already has some pretty good mason skills, which is GREAT. We have no one with even remote skill in masonry, so he can continue this trade. The stout kit (which is an english weasel, if anyone was curious) is a scholarly type, which could prove useful. He seems like a good candidate for a book keeper, seeing as we desperately need one. In addition to this, when he isn't book keeping we could set up a library/laboratory for him to experiment and/or write books. We should see if we can procure any paper, books, and/or writing materials for that. If we really have to we could just have the snailman make him some handheld slabs with which to engrave his findings. As for the tigerwoman, it's her life and she can chose to do what she wants to do for a profession. I would say that if she doesn't know what to pick we could recommend she learns how to cook or engrave. Both are skills that can be picked up without extensive training, and both are skills we need in the fort. And Chedna, if she isn't interested don't push her too far.

The rest of the trade items? I don't really know. We should definitely buy all available wood, wood logs only have a value of 3 Urists. They are likely to push their prices a lot higher because they know we can't get any on our own, but it would probably only get up to around 7 Urists, which is still next to nothing. Fabrics? Sure, as long as they aren't crazy expensive. I could fashion everyone some clothes with them with my adequate (but maybe a little rusty) clothesmaking skill. The only exotic animal I see is that caged bird. I tried to identify it, but was unsuccessful. We should probably ask them what it's name is before we buy it. If it's a female we could potentially use it for egg production. If it isn't, well, Urist (my parrot, for those who don't know) could use a friend. You never know, if it's one of the more intelligent parrots he may even be able to teach it some crude work skills. We should probably just buy whatever other animals they have, for both unforeseen potential use and as emergency blood banks for our more... voracious inhabitants. Food and drink is probably a waste of money, but I guess we could do with the variety. I can through those in if we end up in a situation where the elves end up with a massive profit because we can only pay in increments of 1200 Urists. Other than that, if they have anything interesting that isn't a rip off I can buy it. Maybe some wooden instruments, if anyone cares to learn how to play

Finally, we have to deal with certain... immigration problems. The kobold's story is getting inconsistent, meaning that she's probably lying. Her first story was starving children, now it's brothers and sisters. If she really had dependents at home she would have already left to help them. I don't really care either way, I just want to know the real story. If she wants to stay, and promises to abide by our laws, she can stay and apply for citizenship. If she has dependents in some far off den that actually need her help, she has to make a choice. Either she goes back and helps them, or she brings them here, under the strict stipulation that they must follow the rules as well. We aren't going to spare the man power to escort her, this is her dilemma and we have enough to deal with right now. If she is to stay, no stealing. She can pick up a trade, apply as a scout to the militia, or approach us with her own idea as to what she can do to help GremlinFort prosper. If she doesn't come up with anything, I'm sure some of the craftsmen could use apprentices. In addition, if we ever breach the caverns, anything she wants to steal from there is fair game. There are likely some interesting finds down there if her insatiable desire to steal gets the better of her. Vlakoth, we won't force you to do anything, but we here at GremlinFort are accepting of beings that satiate themselves with blood. Just please don't kill anyone or be a general nuisance. If you find any animals out while you're wandering the tundra, their fair game if you can catch them. Hopefully, Lorumet will get right onto fishing and be able to pull out something of substance. Unlike my lack luster attempts at pulling up anything, she is a nimble viper underwater. If there's anything down there to catch, she can catch it. I've seen her pull out fish the size of her, if not bigger, with minimal damage to the meat. From fish as large as that (sharks included) we can most likely acquire leather, meat, bones, and blood. It would probably be a good idea to at least build a little hut out near the edge of the ice for her to store fishing tools, catches, and barrels ready to catch blood. She can also brew some incredible blue berry wine. So, whenever she settles in she can start doing that, after she's done introducing herself, because she loves to socialize. (Any issues I forgot to touch upon?)

If the kobold does have to get dependents and needs assistance, Kiam would be willing to assist. They generally assume the best about people, and they are an ex-adventurer. If they ran into a trap, they could probably escape.

Edit: Oh, right, but non murderous vampires are totally cool with Kiam (immortal life at the cost of having a gross diet? Seems worth it to me).

I mean, non-fatal vampiric feedings are possible sure, and Vlakoth is generally in favour of that or you start running out of blood-sources pretty quickly, but accidents happen, and if you start sucking the blood from an elf you just can't stop.  :P

... You “accidentally” invited an elf for a walk and murdered them? Why not just convince the others to buy animals? Gluk is a blood-drinker anyways, so probably nobody would notice if you were just careful enough not to kill all the animals.
