Here I am proposing a ship to replace the viper, for when we finish aether tunnels. It is like a viper, but better in every way.

Quote from: Basilisk Class Corvette
A new corvette class hull to replace the venerable Viper.

Features:
-Hull optimized for bronzewood construction. Sleeker, stronger, and uses less ore.
-Narrower frontal battery consisting of two small mounts (for lances) and one proper medium mount (for vanguard). Much narrower and faster profile, only 1 unit of armour required on the front. Still an absolutely devastating amount of frontal firepower, equal to an uncountable number of kettleguns.
-Mounting points for light armour covering the entire ship.
-More defensive cannons. Keep the two tail guns from the Viper, but add 1 light cannon mount each facing up, down, left, and right. These cannons should have some overlap between their fields of fire.
-12 native aether tunnels, streamlined and built into the hull
-12 native trim webs, no refit required

This ship will be much higher performance than the Viper, much tougher, and still have devastating frontal firepower.

Suggested loadout:
-Medium core
-Medium lift
-12 trim webs
-12 aether tunnels
-2 lance cannons (front)
-1 vanguard cannon (front)
-6 kettleguns (2 rear, 1 up, 1 down, 1 port, 1 starboard)
-1+ unit of copper armour
-1 comm officer

Blackstone
The escape from Blackstone isn't pretty.  The Wrethans have intensified their watch on the lower aerosphere, making things more difficult for all involved. Stirring mists below likewise force captains to make hard decisions. Too much altitude and they'll be easier for the Wrethans to pick out. To little, and there won't be much time to evade whatever comes up from below.

The Viperidae and its skiff manage to slip through, but the Ocker and the Jupiter get spotted by skiffs on the way out. The Ocker is the primary target, the captain climbing too high and getting spotted by three Wrethan skiffs. Unlike last time, there's no boidae to provide a distraction, and the three skiffs are on the Boidae quick as death. Despite the topaz in the shroud, the vs core isn't able to stand up to the bombardment for long, and the Ocker is torn apart by repeated fire- cast into the mists as scrap.

Losses: RKNV Ocker

Inside the Spire
It's shockingly uneventful inside the spire. Squads assigned to bait and strike report seeing signs that the Wrethan marines have hastily pulled up stakes and fallen back through Blackstone- presenting no resistance at all in this area. Considering the defensive disposition of our own troops, this has created a buffer zone between our force and theirs- a no man's land. Our militia are thrilled to have the enemy on the run, but the marine captains on the ground are concerned that Wreth is attempting to dig in and make this a siege.

Hopefully time is on our side.

Glowcove
With the news still bleak from Blackstone, it must be heartening indeed for the citizens of Glowcove to see a real defensive fleet gathering around their Spire. Inspiring to our kin, and, hopefully, enough of a force to break the cycle that Wreth has initiated.

The Unfinished

The Natalie sent to scout through to the Burned Mountain first makes its encounter at the Unfinished- a Wrethan skiff. The Wrethan skiff was clearly there as a scout, to watch the passage, and the two skiffs spot one another at nearly the same moment.

The Natalie would have been content to slide on by- but the Wrethan skiff makes that an impossibility. They dive hard, wasting no time in their assault. Yet while the Natalie in question might be one of the last such produced, she's still a creation of royal materials and peerless craftsmanship. The duel between the two ships is definitively decided by the Natalie's slight advantages in maneuverability, initial firing rate, and lass minor advantage in being able to aim turrets during high maneuver via crystal-assisted turrets.

While the delay costs the Natalie time while the engineer has to check her over to make sure she didn't crack anything during the breakneck duel, she's triumphant without a scratch.

Aside from the Wrethan Scout, the Unfinished is as it was- a broken spire, the tip of the rubble just barely visible above a tide of mist.

Burned Mountain

Inside the Spire
One of the marines assigned to watch Burned Mountain's little window of sky reports seeing a Windrider, very briefly, while he was on watch. The event is hardly certain, but it's still enough to galvanize the other marines to keep a weather eye. Despite the fact that they might not be under direct threat, it's sobering to realize exactly how cut off from home they truly are.

Spire Kasgyre

Three new vipers; the Fordonia, Dipsina, and the Bolyeriidae, have been constructed, as well as a new skyskiff and pair of marine squads.

Due to the destruction of the Ocker, some refit orders could not be completed.

It is now the beginning of the year 385 AR.

Spire Kasgyre's Production stands at
12(+12)/y Crystal, 30/125 Banked
12(+2)/y Ore, 14/95 banked
17/y Wood, 30/95 banked
10/y Silk, 26/55 banked

It is the design and project maintenance phase. You have 5 dice to spend.

@Draignean

Viperidae should be at Glowcove.
Jupiter and the skyskiff B at Glowcove should have comms officers.

Anguis should have 2 units of copper armour now.

There shouldn't be any copper armour or comms officers in storage.

Edit: Bolyeriidae should be named Bolyeriidae II.

Topaz Coronation
Progress: 12/16 (2,5,2)
Work with Princess Natalie's crystals falls slightly short of projections, but not by much. There is a considerable amount of delicacy that will be needed to replicate the process at a grand scale. The slightest imbalance of mixtures, a chance variation in temperature, and a fruit years in ripening can be spoiled in a moment. While speed is essential for the war, the necessity of the endeavor has been, and will remain, the creation of a viable process from the Princess's experiments.

We need to try again for stabilizing topaz growth time. Still just as important as last turn, and revisions tend to be more effective before the project is complete.

We can make a lance skiff pattern. 1 per turn, way better than the current skyskiff B, we keep our Natalies, and we will have topaz versions when we finish widespread topaz. Best way to get production lance cannons out.

Or we could try to cheapen comms officers again. Still just as important as last turn.

Aah. Uh, so for the topaz rev, I suggest instrumentation refining. And then the lance skiff.

I fear that could be going too far in a revision. The instruments themselves were a very lucky revision, and trying to make them much more precise to measure baby topaz could run into heavy diminishing returns.

It might be better to try chemical formulas as our plan B.

It might also be better to cheapen comms officers first, then make the lance skiff. Then we can include a comm officer in the skiff pattern.

Hmm. The instruments were a design result, but we revise them all the time. This would  just be making  a small change to them. I mean, they weren't  directly  edited by the last rev.
