The War This Turn:
This season, Cannala is attacking both jungles, the Tereshkova Jungle (in an attempt to deny Forenia's resources again) and the Forenian Jungle, on Forenia's mainland itself. Forenia is still trying to regain ground in their homeland, and has renewed the assault on Titan.

The Battle at Sea
Cannala's Hellfire revision has allowed missiles to be deployed very cheaply. However, the nature of the Fair Fight Module is such that firing a greater quantity of missiles does not really make a difference. Flight squad leaders usually leave the missiles at home and rely on their cannons, which are not really ineffective weapons, but still force them to get close to Forenian fighters.

Off the coast of Tereshkova, a Victoria Cruiser lowers an aging, long-serviced Buccaneer Boat into the water. The fading words "CNS Salty Seaweed", the name of its older mother-ship which had sunk years ago, still adorn the side. The ship it's being lowered from now is the CNS Victory Parade, a name which now, months after its christening, seems to have been premature. The boat dips into the water and and putters off, for just a few hundred yards, before the captain declares: "This is close enough, you lazy gits. Cut the motor and switch to oars." With some grumbling from the small crew (someone accuses the captain of only swapping to oars so eagerly because he doesn't have to paddle, but it isn't said very loud) the boat slowly moves another couple hundred yards before a crewman, peering over the side, declares "I see one!" The captain takes a puff of his pipe and motions his men to gather around and take a look. The boat lists to one side as a dozen men lean over.  A few feet below the water is a metal cylinder, floating and attached to the sea floor by a chain. "That mine down there's got none of the little spikey things on it. Higher ups say the sound of the motors set 'em off somehow, like they've got a little microphone you see. So we can't go too close under power. Now I think the easiest way to disarm them is to float 'em up first. This pamphlet says it's attached to its anchor by a, uh... thirty-two milly-meeter bolt. In inches I think that's like, hm... just use this adjustable wrench. Hey, you! Yeah, fly-boy! Since you just got reassigned to the navy you need to get your feet wet. And you know how to use one of these already." The captain is pointing to man whose patch reads Ernesto Hidalgo, and offers him a pilot's oxygen mask, attached to a tank on board the ship with an extra long hose. Ernesto considers complaining for a moment, then decides better. He slings the hose through his suspenders and dives down to the mine. The captain continues his lecture while Ernesto works below. "I shoulda mentioned you gotta watch out for sharks. He'll probably be fine. Anyway, the other tricky thing about these mines is they're on timers. So sometimes you got past 'em and set 'em off, and they blow up later, like in the middle of the fleet. And then your front-most ships are already in the middle of the minefield and can't get out in time. Real nasty." He stops to toke on his pipe for a moment and Ernesto floats to the surface, clutching the buoyant mine. "I got it!" Ernesto declares. The Captain turns to the rest of his crew. "Once we we find more mines I want a few people diving at a time to make this go faster, so everybody listen to the next step." He's interrupted, as a huge explosion erupts behind them- everybody turns around to see smoke billowing from around the bow of the Victory Parade. After a moment the captain recovers from his shock. "Oh yeah. I guess another thing is even when we steal charts off a Forenian ship, there's still random straggler mines outside the minefield. They're either genuises, or idiots."

Forenia's new Whalesong mines prove rather effective. They can't easily be seen from the surface and serve to deny Cannala from accessing valuable positions for shore shelling (which the Forenians weren't going to take as much advantage of anyway). The timers on the mines make them capable of doing serious damage to fleets by detonating after much of the fleet is already in the field. Without an easy way of detecting the underwater mines, Cannalan sailors are forced to resort to trying to spot mines by peering over the side of Buccaneer craft (which might be targeted by the mines anyway) or just crossing their fingers. Forenians rely on their encrypted communication to coordinate mine laying efforts, and share the safe paths around mine fields with eachother, which has been very effective aside from one or two accidents in which a ship was carried off course by currents or poor navigation.

The rest is unchanged, to sum up: Forenia's aircraft have difficulty approaching Cannalan fleets due to very effective radar-detonated AAA, and their Dolphin torpedoes are extremely effective but lack range and speed to hit from outside flak screens. Forenia suffers some losses from torpedoes delivered by Buccaneer boats, and Cannalan mines (usually deployed by the same boats), although these small boats are vulnerable to attack by air. Forenia has an advantage in a larger number of very large ship cannons (on the Vodka ships) which get some range bonus from rocket-assisted shells. Both sides are aware of eachother's positions due to radar. Cannala also has more effective medium-sized ships than Forenia, whose only really good attack methods are their large Vodka ships, and aircraft carriers.

The situation at sea is neutral.

The Battle for the Tereshkova Jungle
Attacking: Cannala
The dry season begins.

Cannalan infantry have a new trick up their sleeve with the MURD-ER 43 rocket launcher. Its tandem-charge rockets are effective against Blood Eagle reactive armor and therefore are very likely to disable Salamander APCs on a first hit. Because the jungle provides so much opportunity for infantry to ambush armored vehicles, this is devastating, and provided a clear shot (such as down a straight length of river) it has the range and accuracy to attack a Forenian vehicle before the vehicle's crew can even hope to spot a Cannalan soldier crouching in a bush with a rocket launcher. It's much less effective against the occasional Bjorn tank, needing a hit on the side and some good luck to boot for a kill, but these tanks aren't very common here due to the difficulty of moving them about the jungle.

It's fortunate for the Cannalan army that they now have an upper hand in infantry-against-APC combat, (their own Raiders having somewhat adequate protection against RPGs from armor slats) because they've lost a lot of their advantage with shore bombardment due to Forenians indiscriminately dropping Whalesong mines anywhere they'd rather nobody have than risk giving to the Cannalans, which is a lot of places since the Forenians prefer to rely on aircraft for transport. This extends to the Seaweed AA cruisers which had allowed Cannala to exclude Forenian aircraft from significant patches of land near the shore, so Forenians are bombing freely again, and their Firecracker cluster bombs are still very effective.

The difference between the armies remains very close, but Cannala pushes forward.

Cannala gains ground! [Cannala 3/4, Forenia 1/4]

The Battle for the Forenian Jungle

Attacking: Both

Just like last year, this is very similar to the Tereshkova jungle except in that Cannala cannot rely as heavily on sea support. The Forenians, however, also cannot totally mine off the shores as they must leave routes open for their own ships. The Cannalans succeed in exploting these routes by observing Forenian ship movements with photography from their Vengeful Charlotte bombers. Once on land, they eke out a victory with cool rocket launchers and surprise night-vision-assisted attacks.

Cannala advances on Forenian soil again! [Cannala 1/2, Forenia 1/2]

The Battle for Titan

Attacking: Forenia

Forenia's Bjorn tanks shine on the wide open ice fields of Tereshkova. Their cramped crew compartment even makes them rather cozy on the inside, and their low profile is ideal given how little cover there is to take advantage of. Relatively tolerable summer weather means that air operations aren't a complete disaster either, with only a few crashes and emergency landings due to surprise flameouts, although there are several runway fires recorded as a result of Forenian Air Force ground crews attempting to de-ice turbines through unapproved means. The MURD-ER is a good weapon here, its range is used to its fullest in the wide-open spaces by soldiers defending trenches, but it just doesn't have the same dramatic effect it did in the jungle areas and it might fail to disable a Bjorn on a front impact (even then it often disables the engine which leaving the crew alive and gun operational).

Forenia also has a minor advantage with sniper rifles, and puts their Tiger Armor to good use in defensive positions. Both sides also make effective use of heavy artillery, with Forenia having assembled a few Overcompensator positions facing inland and Cannala using their Maretto cannons and mobile artillery.

Forenia advances on Titan [Forenia 2/4, Cannala 2/4]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

The US and UK relinquish their territorial rights in China. The Battle of Stalingrad comes to an end with German 6th Army defeated. Japanese forces retreat from Guadalcanal, ceding it to the Allies. Gandhi, under arrest by British Imperial forces, holds a hunger strike in protest. The US becomes increasingly involved in the war in Europe, mounting bombing raids entirely of American aircraft and aiding the English forces in Africa.

The British construct the Collossus Mk1 Computer, the first fully-electronic (using vacuum tubes) programmable computer, for use in cryptanalysis, though it is kept in complete and total secrecy. The Gloster Meteor enters service as Britain's first jet fighter, outperforming existing German jet aircraft.

Local Events:
The Forenian Nationalist Party for the first time has proposed a motion which is gaining broad inter-party support: Any Forenian citizen found to be drinking or distributing rum will be guilty of Economic Support of the Enemy, and subject to prison, fines, or both, as well as be required to complete a Patriotic Education Course. Citizens are further advised that the bottles of "Forenia Rum" which have recently begun appearing are NOT manufactured in Forenia, and no such manufacturer of rum exists. These bottles of rum are sold by Cannalan smugglers, who have plagued the land every time that the Cannalan Army makes a foothold on Forenia. If anyone is seen selling bottles of Cannalan Rum or "Forenia Rum" they should be reported at once. Soldiers who find themselves attracted to the foreign swill by desperation, perversion or curiosity may have bottles liberated from enemy encampments be officially labeled as 'stolen' by their commanding officer and be excused from any penalties for drinking it, except for physical symptoms. However, citizens are advised that the Cannalan Rum is mostly water, sometimes un-purified seawater, and may be harmful to your health.

In Cannala, El Presidente has increased the Found Goods Tax, which is a duty paid on any spoils of war brought home by Cannalan Citizens. "The money from this tax is earmarked for ammunition and supplies for our men on the Forenian front. The war is very costly and while piracy and thieving against out enemies is never discouraged, since the profits from this are enabled by our progress there some of them need to be invested back into making sure we keep our progress." In other news, a "Little Juraki" district has sprung up in Cannala's capitol. There are several blocks of homes and businesses forming an insular community almost entirely comprised of Juraki immigrants. Reluctance to deal with "Juraki problems" by Cannalan Police means that the area is barely patrolled and ordinary Cannalan citizens fear to go there, and there are reports of murders in the street over "honor duels" and other quaint Juraki customs.

Revision Credit Contest:
Another credit contest so soon? Yes it is! This time a bonus Revision is up for grabs. To win, you must describe why your engineering facilities, design process, and/or engineers themselves are superior. The winner will be able to get an extra revision in next season due to their superior organization and processes. The single best submission, posted in your embassy thread, will win the revision credit for their faction. Limit one entry per person, 600 words maximum (that way people will actually read them!)

Right, you bastards.  We need 100% focus on the Jungle this turn.  If Canalla gains even just 1 more batch of territory, we're fucked.  We'd be losing our access to the Oil making some shit more expensive, and Canalla would gain the Jungle Ore.  Further, the current ground being fought over on Forenia is Jungle, so there's that too.  What are our options to counter this?

A new flamethrower, vehicle mounted or handheld. Our current one is just pathetic.

Can we use jet fuel? Can they be used to rocket-jump in emergencies?

Because we can't afford to lose the jungle:
Quote from: Design
UF-39-APC "Salamander" Pattern F

Similar to the Pattern B model, the Pattern F Salamander (the F stands for Fire) differs from its cousin by featuring a coaxial flamethrower in the 20 mm turret.  Commonly referred to as the "Charmander" by troops, the Pattern F has an effective range of 200 meters and a sustained burst time of 30 seconds.  Unlike Cannala's flamethrowing APC, the Pattern F can move and fire at the same time thanks to a dedicated generator and pump.  Due to the needed storage space for the fuel and generator, passenger capacity is correspondingly reduced.  The flamethrower makes use of Napalm , a gelatinous form of gasoline which allows flames to persist for longer durations.  In order to combat the introduction of tandem-charge warheads in Cannalan RPG's, the Pattern F makes heavy use of sturdy slats and fences over its surface in addition to ERA.

Because it's still a major issue:
Quote from: Revision
UF-RJ-43 'Fair Fight Module' Pattern B

A smaller, more efficient variant of our previous Fair Fight Module.  Now protects against proximity-fuzed AAA!  Small and efficient enough to be fitted to our fighters without appreciable hits to performance.

Quote from: UF-43-IRC "Spectre"
Using Cannalan Aswangs seized in the field as well as the fact that the first  infrared camera was developed over 10 years ago we should be able to develop our own with ease.  This will allow us to counter their night raids, launch our own, and out we do well we should be able to spot concealed forces.

I honestly wouldn't mind pushing the navy a bit more. If we could get a navy advantage this turn it might be worth more than having a leg up with infantry.

UFS-DD-43 "Arbalest"

The United Forenian Destroyer 1943 "Arbalest" (commonly referred to as the "Steel Abs" by the sailors who crew her) is an improvement over our first attempt at a Destroyer five years ago.  It borrows heavily from the USA's successful Fletcher-class Destroyers (1942) in design.

The ship features Class-2 "Light" Naval Armor (75-125mm) to render it resilient against anything smaller than an artillery shell, including Cannala's 30 mm cannons.  Propulsion is two screws powered by a four oil-fired turbines.  It features five 130 mm arnored turrets; two on the bow, two on the stern, and one amidships behind the twin smokestacks (possibly to be later swapped out with a planned ASM launcher).  Unlike the Archer, these are electrically operated and make use of our Longshot Pattern B firing control.  Two torpedo launchers of five torpedoes each sit amidships; one between the smokestacks, and one just behind the rear smokestack.  Unlike the wooden torpedo launchers the Archer uses, the Arbalest has powered metal launchers with firing control and trajectory calculators.  Six twin-mounted AC-41 Velociraptors (twelve total) are stationed around the ship for point-defense against both air and light ship attacks, but due to space constraints the Arbalest does not feature Anti-Air Artillery.

Most notable is the inclusion of SONAR, which was first implemented nearly thirty years ago in 1915.  By making use of hydrophones stationed around the hull of the ship and sweeping an acoustic beam through the water, the ship can recreate the effect of our RADAR underwater.  This is intended primarily for early torpedo detection and mine-clearing operations.  The Arbalest also comes with mountings for anti-sea mine nets, allowing it to carefully sweep through mined areas and collect/detonate the free-floating explosives when properly equipped.  A pair of rails on the rear of the ship allow for easy Whalesong mine deployment.

The role of this ship is to act as an escort and protect our more vulnerable ships from torpedoes, sea mines, and torpedo ships.  Unlike the Archer, the Arbalest will be more suited to defend against torpedo boats by having faster-rotating armaments and six times as many AC Velociraptors.

No, we need something jungly. The naval theatre is less important on Tereshkova, and we can't afford to lose control of the jungle entirely. The Charmander might be a good option.

As for our revision, rather than trying to hard-counter their prox fused AAA, we should just try to steal their missile again- missile tech could let our planes attack their ships from outside of AAA range, bypassing the problem.

I wanna steal the Missile too.  But the AAA is invalidating our air advantage pretty hard....its a tough choice.  I guess it depends on how our design rolls - the Charmander is pretty simple, so it should do well when we roll our next 2. But if not, we might need the Fair Fight to solidify our air advantage.

This is all deplorably sane... I can only express my disappointment through interpretive suggesting.
Quote from: Butterfire
This is, basically, an infantry-portable afterburner. A combustion chamber provides thrust while a valve dumps massive volumes of fuel into the exhaust. The fuel economy is abysmal, the firepower legendary. A relatively small number of support frames are distributed to units carrying multiple Butterfires. These frames allow the weapon to be stabilied for fixed positions, or can be arranged to hold the fuel back-pack and the exhaust device in a balanced line while holding the cargo more-or-less along the same line, with small fins. This allows some measure of stable flight. They are designed to hold a pilot, though it is assumed that this would have a very low survival rate the mere possibility of infantry scaling cliffs in an instant or jumping over rivers imposes upon the enemy to reassess their deployment, and the possibility of rapidly relocating man-sized objects should not be overlooked...

What happened to the Cataphract?

Edit: Going through the past turns, it was only mentioned twice.

Quote from: Turn 14
The Khorne and Cataphract both have sufficient armor to stop each other's guns from completely destructive hits, but the Khorne's deck is a weak spot, effective plunging fire can be very destructive.

Quote
The Keres is Expensive, but with savvy Cannalan gunning their 9-inch guns can allow them to neutralize multiple Cataphracts, Forenia's biggest gunships, in a direct firefight.

I remember what's going on. It's this thing where I keep forgetting that the Keres is not a discount Victoria, but actually something that fights against our Cataphract.
