Sorry. I didn't think to update that---I posted immediately after being told that "Hey there's three more posts"

Trying to make the radar smaller AND getting the targeting working makes me nervous.  Those are two very different things, and the next stage of smaller radar is Cavity Magnetrons (which would likely be a design, since we would make proximity fuzes out of them for our AAA)

Just focusing on making the targeting working would be the better option, since that means we can hook it up to aaaall our AAA amd artillery when we get radar small enough to put on everything.

Well, I mean, we should be able to make our radar slightly smaller without resorting to cavity magnetrons. A klystron (which I believe is nominally what we're using now) shouldn't be so big it needs an entire ship to carry. I mean, Cannala isn't using cavity magnetrons either, and their radar is smaller than ours.

The more I think about it, the more attractive the Velociraptor seems. Having something better with which to push back at them in the jungle would be great, and if it worked in the air that'd be incredible.

Something that helps us in the jungle and also helps to pave the way for ATGM's:

Quote
Revision: Saltgrinder Rocket Package

Based on the success of our mobile rocket-launcher artillery, the Saltgrinder Rocket Package is simply Sarukh rockets with a bit more warhead rather than propellant, mounted on the Salamander, Breaker, Stinger, and Haast.  Shorter rails for the rockets allows the configuration to be lighter, albeit with a penalty to accuracy.  At least two can be mounted on each Salamander, four on each Breaker, and up to a tonne on the Haast.  This shouldn't be an issue, since the weapon is designed to be used at shorter ranges or in dives.  The Saltgrinder can be mounted on Salamanders to give them a fighting chance against enemy tanks, on our Breakers to give them a larger punch against both heavy and lighter armor, and on our planes to give them a more accurate and proactive role in eliminating enemy tanks and light ships.

The Saltgrinder fills a role our army is missing.

It applies an existing weapon to more of our vehicles. Helps on sea, and directly counters the enemy armor advantage in the jungle.  The AC 18 does it's job just fine, and Sensei has already questioned it.  This would let us hit more stuff with rockets and directly helps us in the jungle.  The Raider has mounted RPG's - let's one-up them and put rockets on our tanks, APC's, and planes.

Sensei questioned it based on an assumption that we know to be wrong. Writing of the design is premature.

Even so, the AC-18 already does its job.  Things shot by it die quickly, whether it's Raiders, planes, or infantry.  The only thing not killed by it is the Bull Tank, and the only armor we have mounted with the AC-18 is going up an expense level.  The Saltgrinder gives our Salamanders and tanks and attack planes something that kills things deader in a way we're missing.

It's also used in ground emplacements and armored cars. And planes.

Upgrading the gun should allow aircraft to reliably penetrate Moskurgian tanks.

I'm taking cues from Pentagon wars.

Test your weapons against inferior designs to get impressive results.

But it should deal with Canallan stuff too, I guess.

I recall that the Thunderbolt II was commissioned based upon research that tanks were weak against attacks from above. Now, The Avenger is not the same as our AC-18, but I could still see a descending Haast putting occasional holes in a proper tank given the earlier armour technology. There would be better targets most of the time, but it feels premature to suggest that it would be a futile effort.
Also note that the enemy's knock-off jet has a 30mm autocannon. They are probably doing a close air support design with it...

I do actually like the saltgrinder, but I don't think it will work well when they bring out a wannabe warthog and start hunting our materiel. Warthogs can reliable kill modern tanks with a 30mm, Haast's with an upgraded 20mm ought to at least put enough dents in to make a turret stop turning or something.

I would argue that rockets would be just as effective, if not more, but I understand why people are enticed by the AC.

I'm not much of a gun expert - would a 20 mm be large enough to pen? Can we get it at a high enough velocity with ww2 tech to do that reliably?
