If we make a Battlecruiser lets ensure it has the armour of a battleship rather than a cruiser. Thats what killed HMS Hood and most other British Battlecruisers, lack of physical defence.

With 300mm guns it would be below WWII standards for battleships. We could call it a Light Battleship.

It does need armour greater than a cruiser or it will be a glass cannon. We have enough of those already.

What sunk HMS Hood was that the Battlecruiser, a ship meant to be able to hunt down enemy cruiser raiders, was used in the line of battle againt battleships. Given that the enemy has nothing like a real battleship, a battlecruiser is uniquely suited at fucking them up. Adding battleship armour would mean their ships could run away or around ours. Having a battlecruiser mean we can fuck them up bigly.

A battlecruiser would also be pretty well suited as a carrier escort; those guns would really tell any enemy ships to stay well away from the carrier.

We should get a fully fledged battleship only if the Cannalians make a battleship or battle cruiser that is better then all our stuff.

In fact the Hood was, I believe, intended to be a "Fast Battleship" like those designed during WWI. They had to keep the scale of armor of a BB, but the speed of a BC. Much better idea that "lightly armored ship with big guns meant to....What?". NEVER BCs. Just so you know. They're pointless.

If we're going to do this, we're going to do it right. We have 12 inch guns right now. So we build a ship to WW1 specs. It will have more than enough armor to take every hit they can dish out, and just enough speed (20 knots or so) to do what needs to be done.
