No disagreement here. Cannala itself is likely to be heavily defended, far more so than Titan (or whatever they called that island). Mind you, I still don't expect us to succeed in taking a beachhead, even if the Z is so successful it bumps them down to No Naval Advantage. We just don't have the necessary landing craft.
...actually, I think it's so hopeless, I'm not even going to vote for attacking there. There is no in-game advantage (that we know of) to not using both attacks, but IC I don't support throwing away our troop's lives for no reason.

Battle Report 11: Winter 1940

Sorry for the delay!
I've been busy lately on some home projects, and if I'm being completely honest, I've been playing some Crossout too (I don't usually like to write these turns after a busy day). Hopefully we'll get back to a faster paced update schedule next week or so.

Minor Corrections:
The Santos Carrier is and has been Very Expensive, but it said Expensive probably because I mis-typed. The AS-MV21-Al has had its resource numbers changed to match that of the planes; its cost tier (cheap) is the same as it was before.

New Equipment:

This turn, the Forenians have built a bigger, better aircraft carrier: The UFS-CV-40 Zheleznogorod. This monster is designed to pack in a large number of planes, and sortie them as quickly as possible, which it accomplishes by using flight decks- literally, on separate decks. One runway is below the top deck so planes can launch directly from the hangar, and the other runway is on the top deck. Only the top runway can land planes, but only the lower runway has a "catapult" which is loaded with rocket motors, allowing airplanes which require a higher speed to take off. It stores far more planes than the Wasp Nest but is Very Expensive. For their revision they made a cargo carrying version, the UFS-CV-40b Sea Lift. The Sea Lift provides 3 TC.

Cannala has built a jet aircraft of their own, the M1940 A-5 Spearhead. The spearhead uses two turbojet engines much like the Thunderbird, only they are up against the body, giving the appearance of the body simply having two scoops where it meets the bottom of the wing, and two smallish exhaust ports in back. It's heavily armed with two Can Perforators in the wings and a Can Shredder in the nose, allowing it to kill bombers with ease. It also features a hydraulic control system for better steering at high speed. It's not as fast as the Thunderbird but it's only Expensive, which is a significant advantage all on its own. For their revision they've revised the Santos carrier, giving it a more modern flight deck layout of two overlapping runways which allows aircraft to wait on deck while other aircraft are taking off or landing. It also has a steam-powered catapult, allowing Spearheads and well-loaded A-2 Sparks to be sortied from the carrier.

The Forenian Army currently has the following equipment:

The War This Turn:
Forenia is attacking the Tundra, and the Plains. During next turn's strategy phase they will have to decide how to use their new TC. As there is not even an attempt by Cannalan to retake the Jungle, Forenia gains the Ore there but again, will have to decide how to use their TC. Cannala is also attacking on the plains, and sending their army to liberate the French Colony which is nominally under control of the Vichy french government. They are holding on to their Expense credit for now.

The Battle at Sea
As winter closes in, the seas become foggy again.

Both sides have made significant leaps in their carrier armament. Forenia's Zheleznogorod carriers are huge, and have a significant complement of planes. The Santos can now launch deadly jet fighters, and A-2 Sparks loaded with bombs (Shark torpedoes are relatively ineffective against torpedo belts). As both carriers are a similar expense, but Forenia's is larger, Forenia can field a few more planes, although several are usually under repairs at a given time thanks to accidents with the eccentric hangar system which suspends extra planes from the rafters. Forenia's carrier also has issues with its catapult system: Loading a new rocket motor into the catapult, and waiting for the smoke to clear afterwards, adds a lot of time to each takeoff.

Radar is increasingly important, as both sides begin to use aircraft further from their carriers, but the lack of actual radar on planes can be a burden. Forenia's radar has the distinctive advantage of seeing ships, which gives them arguably an advantage if they're close to enemies in poor conditions, but as soon as they scramble aircraft, the Cannalan radars light up like a christmas tree and Cannala scrambles their own aircraft. An unfortunate downside to Forenia's huge radar is they have relatively few radar ships, which can be easily targeted. If they lose their radar, they're sitting ducks.

Direct conflicts between Cannalan and Forenian fighter groups are common, and can make or break a naval battle. Now that the new jet fighters from both sides are out over seas in large numbers, jet duels are common. Fights between the Thunderbird and Spearhead are very decisive: Neither aircraft is very survivable, and they're both armed with cannons, so a few hits usually takes out an enemy aircraft. For both planes, a round through an engine will cause a sudden failure (and control in the Thunderbird's case), a few in a wing might cause the wing to break entirely, and hits to the tail will also cause the relatively unstable planes to lose control. The heavy cannon in the Spearhead is best suited for hunting bombers (which it does extremely well) but isn't a huge advantage in regular dogfights, not enough to make up for its greater weight. The Thunderbird is somewhat a better dogfighter; it can't quite turn as tight as low speeds but it can climb and maintain energy better. Forenians maintain an air advantage thanks to their better training, and the capacity of their carriers (don't forget that the Wasp Nest is still in service as well) which helps somewhat to offset the fact that their jets are bloody expensive. It's also notable that for both sides, jet fighters have a significant advantage over prop fighters but it's still not rare for a prop fighter to kill a jet.

Cannala also benefits significantly from the ability to launch their A-2 Spark planes from Santos carriers, their bomb loads can quickly ruin radar systems, or make carrier flight decks unusable on Forenian ships (especially the Wasp Nest). The fact that Cannala isn't getting totally trounced in the air is enough to let their ships' superior cannons, armor, torpedoes, and sea mines do the talking.

Cannala has a Major Naval Advantage this season.

The Battle for the Plains:

Attacking: Both

With Cannala still holding a naval advantage, and Forenia's new units this turn focused on the sea, it's clear early on that Cannala will continue their forward march here. However it's worth mentioning that as Cannala has access to airstrips and can ship planes as cargo, the greater numbers of their Spearhead fighters are enough to put both sides on equal ground in the air. The Can Shredder cannons are a huge threat to HAFB bombers, as well as Reckless Effect transports carrying paratroopers; Forenian ground forces receive limited air support.

Cannala gains ground. [Cannala 3/3, Forenia 0/3]

The Battle for the Tundra:
Attacking: Forenia

Forenia has come for the Tundra again, this time with their amphibious Salamander APCs to gain a beachhead. It works, some of the time: A Salamander crawling up the beach is pretty immune to things like autocannon emplacements, and can lay down good suppressing fire. However they're expensive and have limited transport capacity compared to a lander boat, so it's an all or nothing gambit for the small quantities of Salamander soldiers which can be sent out at a time to secure a beach head for the remainder of the soldiers, who will follow in extremely vulnerable rowboats. Forenia sends their best infantry for the task of fighting outnumbered on the rocky, frozen beaches. Salamander Marines, as they're called wear the salamander patch on their uniforms proudly. However, the limited numbers of Salamanders, and the fact that some assault ships are lost before even reaching the fight (Cannala still has the naval advantage) means it's not enough to create a dedicated foothold.

Forenia does not gain a foothold. [Cannala 4/4, Forenia 0/4]

The Western Jungle Island:

When Cannalan forces arrive, the French colony is in worse shape than expected. They say that some group of pirates has been extorting them for a while and decided to steal as much they could before fleeing when word came that the Cannalan Navy was on its way. According to the colonists, the pirates refused to speak about their origins, but they were almost all white and spoke Russian. The resources here will not be ready in time to affect unit prices until Turn 13.

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

In Europe, Vichy France is formally established, and Britain refuses peace terms with Germany, declaring their intent to fight Germany alone if need be. Britain mounts an attack on the French navy, seizing or destroying most of their ships for fear that they might fall into German hands. Italy conquers British Somaliland in Africa. Leon Trotsky is murdered. Britain begins bombing Berlin, the damage is slight but Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to target British cities in response. Germany, Italy and Japan sign the Tripartite pact, formalizing the Axis as a military alliance. Forenia signs shortly thereafter, although they continue to focus all their war effort on Cannala.

In America, Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected for his third term, making him the first president to serve more than two terms.

Alliances:
The Germans have requested that Forenia manipulate its parliament to better align with axis ideals: Communists or Socialists must be banned from holding seats in parliament (there are several now), and the Forenian Nazi Party must have a designated minimum of twelve seats. You can accept or decline this request.

In Cannala, Presidente Eduardo Charpes (enough Cannalans are indignant at his reformist attitudes that the moniker 'El Presidente' hasn't really stuck yet) is considering a subsidized housing program for displaced Juraki. As this would take tax money away from Cannalans and give it to their former enemies, it's extremely controversial. Many Juraki have been stealing and forming gangs, but Charpes claims that this will help. Alternatively he could put more tax money into searching for a cure for the Red Rot, the sugarcane-killing fungus which the Juraki released at the end of the last war. He seeks your votes as a source of advice.

Additionally, both alliances are interested in receiving a sample of your new jet aircraft.

Turn 12, Commence!

You may now begin voting for your design phase!

Well, that went terrible.

The Cannalan's somehow made a better jet, and then revised their carrier to be on par with ours.

Their jet is not better than ours -- the Thunderbird has notably better performance, I want to cut this off before it begins, but it is cheaper. It may behoove us to decomplexify that engine as our revision.

In terms of design, we could benefit from building a cruiser this turn.

Cheapness is part of the quality of the design.

And yes, the Thunderbird is faster, but that is only because the Spearhead is optimized to fight bombers. It has heavier armament, which obviously weights it down and makes it slower. That's not a flaw, just a design choice.

I suspect that their planes are not Very Expensive because they are not [Complex] because of their turboshaft work. It's a matter of their development up to their plane rather than the plane itself. I do, however, suggest making those engines no longer [Complex], because if we successfully do so and we grab the Ore, then the Thunderbird will become Cheap.

I agree with Aedel but we need to keep that discussion for the Strategy phase because some of us are rather invested in the results and it's going to overtake other discussion if we let it.

I say design smaller radar (for night fighting and much better gun accuracy including our AAA which will help a little at warding off bombers), and either revise the Archer to have a big gun or decomplex the jet engine.

Decomplexifying the jet engine is absolutely necessary -- the benefit we will have from cheap Thunderbirds will not only apply navally but provide just a huge advantage over land.

I am suggesting building a better destroyer or a cruiser because our problem isn't really bombers, our problem is that we have no good way of dealing with their bigger ships without crushing air advantage, and turn after turn they've sailed up and blown our carriers to smithereens, something that needs to at least be mitigated before we ever have a chance at control of the sea.
