It's already as light as it's going to be. But the easy interchange of ammo it just facilitated by using a standard blowback operation. Which will increase the weight so...

The description in  Sensei's spoiler says "the weapon is quite large,  with a simple but heavy barrel". Hence the lightening suggestion. We can't make it too much smaller without it being incompatible with AC18 mounts though.

Large doesn't necessarily equate to heavy, and the barrel isn't likely the heaviest part of the weapon.

That doesn't preclude is from lightening it or any other part of the gun.

Which as you said,  would make lightening important so as to counteract that.  I'm sure that in looking back on a twenty year old design we'll find other ways to lighten the gun as well.

A suggested revision,  that will benefit not just the Jungle,  but all fronts:
UF-AC-40 Designed to replace the AS-AC18, without having to alter any designs that use it, this applies twenty years of improved weapons knowledge to apply general improvements all round,  but specifically in reducing the weight of the weapon and allowing easy interchange of ammo.

I really like the idea of replacing the AS-AC18 with better weapon.
A new Rocket-Assisted Projectile will give use greater range and higher speeds improving accuracy.
We should scarp the blowback operation and up scale the AS-AR34's action.

As it turns out every one and there dog is due to look in to rocket assisted 9mm bullets for SMG use.

To all those voting for new fighter, the Cannalans introduced a new aircraft carrier this turn, not an actual aircraft. This allows them to deploy aircraft at sea to contest our air dominance there, but it should not do anything in the Jungle, which is our most important theatre. They do not have any more of an advantage in the air over the Jungle than they did last turn. We do not need a new fighter (yet).

Furthermore, jet engines, or motorjet are likely too difficult to base this gamble on. We would be better served doing it next turn, when we have a research credit to spare.

Honestly, I was completely surprised by the new Cannalan carrier, because I was thinking they should go for a ground design/revision to secure the Jungle. Hubris?

EDIT: Anyone up to offer the Death Ball to the Axis?

Not hubris, simply they don't actually plan to take and hold it. They just want a buffer between us and their homeland.

@Azzurro: yes, they designed a carrier this turn.
But our fighter isn't a reactive move: it was planned last turn and it is meant to be what the haast never was, learning our lessons from that design failure ( kind of. it is still a great plane). We rely a lot on air superiority, but until we get a better craft we are on the edge of losing it.
Rocket artillery is nice, but I don't see it as a big priority, although I really like it.

Well, we've seen how it helped them gain a foothold on Mt. Konstantin. But yeah, if they'd gone for the knockout punch in the Jungle we could be facing them in the desert this turn.

Won't it? I guess the trees might get in the way a bit.

Yeah, trees get in the way and the warfare in the jungle, centred on small unit tactics, means that artillery barrages aren't as effective due to just having a lot less enemies in the target area. To really start beating them in there we need better infantry first and foremost, tanks coming second alongside aircraft for control of the roads.

Motorjets will be too complex and expensive for the benefit they'd provide; we may as well just go for a proper jet.

As the Multi-rockets should be quite cheap, I think we'd easily be able to saturate a general area with them (something we'd have to do anyway because of the inaccuracy of unguided rockets). This, combined with our new squad radios, should allow out infantry to relay exact enemy positions to our rocket artillery, which can then bombard the general area.
