strange sounds? are there night guards or people who work night shifts for me to talk to? I think people that are normally out and about at the time will have better info than people that are exhausted and disoriented by the nighttime, and also if the sounds are actually just something normal.

Buy extra supplies should we need them. Look into hiring a local guide and an extra bodyguard, if no guides available buy a map of the local area.

Based on the info we got from these people, do we have any indication it might be a spirit doing this? If yes, buy a ghost charm.

Look into our books on mundane and magical creatures, anything that matches the info we got here? What about the picture book?

Finally, start going for those ruins. Make sure we always have at least 2 people up on watch, one of them being Ecalir or Darwin. Set up tripwires linked to some improvised noisemakers if we need to make camp as well.

If we make it there unmolested, look around for clues.

Yeah, tell Saeko the d12 contain word.  Or whatever.  Dunno if you meant she has to roll to understand it or something.  Also, give her 90 mana, eating thaum for it.

Use know, possibly with some scrying spells using "human", to judge how unstable the magicoal pile is.  Is it very likely that it could be left alone without exploding for a year?  Or is there some reasonable danger of it going boom within a month?  I'd figure it's probably safe in the short term, since it's been sitting here just fine ever since the city crashed, but I'm worried we could have started something by opening things up, or just by being near it.  Magic is weird and dangerous.

Assuming we're not about to explode, take the painting-Saeko and go exploring one of the unexplored rooms in Gravid.  Specifically, the mysterious floating cube room, which has black stone cubes covered in gold patterning.  Try to figure out what the room is, what it's for, and debate with painting Saeko as a side project--does she seem to have the full intelligence of the original Saeko (d8+2 know/sense)?  Or does her amnesiac nature render her incapable of coming up with any original ideas?

Finally, melt magicoal.

Edit: ER's action mentions that he thinks painting Saeko is still in the painting.  Just to clarify, she's not.  She's a fully animated three-dimensional person.

Guide would be 1 gold a day. Bodyguard 2-4 gold a day depending on skill.

Considering the way it attacks and vanishes, and the general description of it, its not unreasonable. You buy a ghost charm for 10 gold.

Nothing in the picture book. However, investigations of other books and asking around reveals that it is likely the work of a possessing spirit, one of the remnants of the old days. Old spirits possess living things and then use them to continue with whatever their old commandments were. This thing was likely a gatekeeper, now hunting down trespassers. The area it resides in is near the ruins of an old gate in the former outer wall of the city.

And then some Discord stuff.

You walk around and talk to nightwatchmen and various others who are more at home in the dark. They say the sound is not entirely new but that it has grown louder and more common recently. They say it has something to do with the crystals around the city, or at least that's what they believe.

Eat coal, leveling Endurance, then Speed.
Go with Ek to examine the Cube Room.

Talk to Painting:
Does she want to pick a name for herself?
Where does she see herself as being?
Is she distressed at all by her current state?
Would she prefer to be outside the painting? (I assume she's still inside there?)

Spoiler: Zavi (click to show/hide)
5 coal, 171 mana.

Painting says:
1. Her name is Saeko
2. Where? Here. In this room. At the dig site? This is an odd question.
3. Not really. Its odd but not "Scary" as things go.
4. Its more interesting out here, more to see and do. In there she can only really watch.

Yeah, tell Saeko the d12 contain word.  Or whatever.  Dunno if you meant she has to roll to understand it or something.  Also, give her 90 mana, eating thaum for it.

I mean after she finds it she'll have to roll to "get it".  Ok.

It will likely be safe as long as its not messed with. Magicoal decays slowly, leaking mana over decades, changing the world around it a bit at a time. It would likely just decay back into normal stone over the next few centuries, as is. Nothing about the level of meddling you've done with it so far seems to have accelerated the decay, or stagnated it.  Either would be bad, for different reasons.

[12+5v20] Dang, so close. [6+2v1] Heh

You take painting Saeko to the cube room. You stare at it for a while but don't get it. She says that its probably a "Brain" and power switcher of sorts. Routes power where its needed and activates different systems by shifting connections and providing the right "shaping" of mana.  She seems quite sure of this. You notice that her lack of memory outside this site and her memories since created does mean her personality is different from saeko's to some degree. She also seems to treat this place as a lot more reasonable and self-evident in its set up than anyone else. You suppose its because its all she knows.

1 coal, 38 mana.

Go find that release mechanism.  With the stuff removed from the core room, there shouldn't be too much left to go through, but check there.  Then check the control room outside the core room for that, including the pile of non-furnature stuff that was removed.  If it fails, bring in Ekrov to help look, both outside and, while holding hands, inside the core room.  If it still isn't found, try wearing the control suit and seeing if that has a release control on it, assuming the wings and ears can fit inside one.  If they can't, the wings expire in a few hours so try then.

Also, ask Ekrov about getting more mana.

Spoiler: Saeko Hirahara (click to show/hide)
[6+2v15]
Simply put, you can't find it. You check the room and there is nothing which stands out. You check the control room for a nice big "Eject core" button and nothing stands out. You try the control suit but its got no power in it so you basically just flail for a bit. You grab Ekrov and have him  look.
[1+5v6][6+2v7]
Ekrov and the Painting you confir for a bit. They come to the conclusion that its likely something related to the king's key. The King was apparently the only one who could enter or leave so  its likely he was the only one with authority to move the core.  How he did it... thats the issue. Maybe the people who held the key would know?

Go inspect the crystals during the day, then see if I can accompany one of the night watchmen on their rounds for a night, preferably one that includes some crystals on their normal route. Assuming I get a yes, then do so. pay extra attention to sounds, what is normal and what is not. both day and night. See if I can identify what sound is being talked about, and what it is associated with.

"It feels like cheating that you just had to cast a spell and now we have an adult daughter together, doesn't it Ek?"

Ekrov's face turns a deep red, and his mouth flaps open and shut repeatedly as a chorus of nonsense sounds tumble out "Ih-fwa--huh?  She, she's not a daughter!  And we're not!  Oh, grah, ugh..."

He slaps a hand over his face and groans, scowling into his palm.  "That's a really weird way to put it!  She's not a daughter, she's a clone, even if we created her!  Don't say stuff like that, you'll give her weird ideas!  And seriously, she's older than me, even if she has no memories, she's certainly not my daughter!"

"That's dumb!  Parenthood is a bunch of things, it's psychological and behavioral and biological!  If anyone is her parent, it's Saeko's original parents.  Though she's not biologically existent, actually... maybe she doesn't even have blood, we haven't... maybe her parents would be whatever the inks came from?  No!  No, she's still the child of Saeko's parents, her personality and mind is the same, and Saeko's personality and mind are because of her history.  She's more like... umm... a tree?  A tree that a person messed with, which made it grow into two trunks.  One trunk is Saeko, and she is the other trunk.  The person who did the cutting isn't the second trunk's parent, they're just some weirdo.  Both trunks have the same ancestors, and the same history."

"Paint Sae isn't really a clone of Saeko, though. If anything, she's the impression of Saeko which lives inside of your mind, Ekrov. She doesn't have the same memories, she doesn't have the same personality, she's not made from Saeko. It's like you wrote a song about a tree. The song is made by you, from your mind, not from the tree itself. The only part of Saeko which went into Paint Sae is an impression."

"Ekrov, it doesn't really matter who is, (and at this she looks uncomfortable) her parents.  She's a copy of, well, me.  How long is she going to be around for, or did you make the spell permanent?"

"I don't think that's right, Zavi." Ekrov says, calming down a bit, his voice becoming contemplative "We would need to try some other kind of test, but I suspect she actually is more of a clone than I should be able to create.  Beyond that, people are products of their history--even if you argue that she is simply my flawed impression, she isn't my creation.  If I copied a painting of yours, stroke by stroke, with only small errors, would my painting be--"

"Umm.. okay?"

"Ekrov, it doesn't really matter who is, (and at this she looks uncomfortable) her parents.  She's a copy of, well, me.  How long is she going to be around for, or did you make the spell permanent?"

"Oh, uh.  The spell only has enough power for her to survive for another five days.  After that... I'm not sure, maybe she'll return to the painting?  Or maybe she'll simply stop existing?  Well, her mind will stop existing either way, I suppose."

Ekrov frowns at that, his gaze dropping to the floor.
