Gawen gritted her teeth. The nerve of these people... Of course no one had come to claim her, she'd been expected to be away for months if all went well. Did they not have maps? And now she was to be branded like a farm animal. . .

She silently stepped forward, her hand outstretched. She calmly met the General's eyes as she did so.

"You savages."

An expression of great distaste on her face, Ghamina stepped forward and, pulling off her glove, held out her hand.

Aaron ignored the glare of the General, though it did tick him off they didn't even get his name right. He couldn't exactly refuse the offer, he'd rather chose life over death any day. He stood up and walked forward holding out his left hand. He looked over to the man reading off names.


"It's Aaron HawkLIGHT, not Hawkright by the way. Get it right next time."

"Well... quite the surprise here."Alain muttered, stepping forward with his hand outstretched like the rest, "Normally I don't go volunteering for anything without knowing what madness I'll be involved in. Or volunteering period, for that matter. But...better than any of the alternatives."
    With that said, he glanced back at the hooded man and his branding irons. Their jailers had a touch for the dramatic, it seemed... but a pardon from certain death and the promise of coin was nothing he was going to scoff at, just because of a bit of fire. After the heat he'd endured that night, a simple poker wasn't much to be afraid of.

After a moment, Wolf smirked.

"If you vanted to hire me, all you had to do vas say so."

She made no comment whatsoever about her 'assessment' and started working on unbuckling her right gauntlet.

"You may brand the other one. I am left-handed and a swordvoman's life is her swordhand."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Well!  I'm glad to see I've still that claim of treason dangling around my neck.  I imagine the old dean's having a wonderful time trying to clean up the damage to the Academy's reputation."

: "Still, no matter.  It's Professor Warwick, if you'd be so kind.  Stripped of my position or not, I earned the damned title, and I must insist upon it."

Notably, he didn't even bother to deny the charge of malfeasance.  What was the point?  It wasn't as though they were wrong in that regard.  Even if the details were a bit confused.

: "Ah, but I'm rambling.  Why not?  I can't say I'm more scholar than spy or soldier, but I'm always happy to serve my nation.  Even if my nation insists on trying to kill me for doing my job as I see fit."

The man stepped forward, cheery grin on his face as he waved his left arm in the general direction of Master Branwich.

One by one, Master Branwich branded the symbol of the skull into the back of each prisoner's hand. When that was done, he carefully bandaged each fresh wound to prevent infection while General Eastland spoke.

: "For the non-citizens who are unaware, the skull icon means that you have been sentenced to lifetime incarceration. The law states quite clearly that any such man found outside an Imperial prison, or without the escort of an Imperial officer, may be captured or killed on sight. This is my insurance. Any of you that manage to slip away without completing my assignment will be hounded for the rest of their life.

"Captain Porkins here will accompany you, to serve as both your cover and your guide. Once you return, my healers will remove the brand and you will be free to make new lives as you see fit. Any questions so far?"

Wolf buckled her gauntlet back on with a snort. She had suffered from, recovered from, a lot worse than a burn.

"No vonder he is such a bolvan, vith a name like Porkins."

"So. Vhat are ve doing, and how much are ve getting paid to do this thing you vish?"

: "Since she already brought it up...  Yes.  What sort of man willingly keeps the name Porkins?"

: "His parents are the real criminals here, if you ask me."

: "Captain Porkins' name has nothing to do with your mission. Unless you have something relevant to ask, perhaps you should remain silent.

"In any case. You will be traveling east, towards dwarven lands. The dwarves operate a sort of bank on the outskirts of their territory, which my family has made use of for generations. I want you to go to the bank, retrieve a certain item for me, and return it here. The Captain knows more about it and will fill you in once you are on your way.

On paper it is an easy task, but you must be cautious. The Wastelanders were defeated less than a year ago and many dangers still prowl the land. Thus, I will be providing suitable weapons from the armory. Return the item to me despite the danger and you will each be rewarded."

Edmund watched the bandaging of his hand carefully to make sure it was correctly done.

: Ahem. What about our insurance that you will keep your end of the deal?

: "Not much more to say on what lies between here and this bank?"

: "That is simple. My fiancee will be accompanying you along with Captain Porkins. The item I'm sending you to retrieve is in her family's vault.

"If that isn't sufficient, you are welcome to return to your holding cell and await dawn."

: "Not much more to say on what lies between here and this bank?"

: "Nothing concrete. Reports of remnant warbands abound, sometimes with bodies. Just last week we got word of a horde of undead as well, but the scouts have not caught up with it yet, if it exists."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Your fiancee!  Well, I for one am astonished at this show of... trust?  Well, something along those lines."

: "I'm growing more curious by the moment as to what this item is.  And why you put your faith in a group of alleged criminals to retrieve it."

: "Ah, no matter.  I'm sure we'll be enlightened soon enough."

"Hmm, Eastland, Eastland. Ah. I know."

"Does name Bolferos mean anything to you?"
