You've given me enough activity that this update will cover a good stretch of time.  Does the fact that we're out of combat mean for a quicker update for the GM to write?  Nope!  Not with all these rolls and inventory changes . . .

Well, that was a fine way to meet new people, wasn't it?  Today's exiles can see pretty clearly that the older crew, from the other side of the wall, is a tough bunch--with interesting equipment.  Did that teal javelin somehow avoid hitting friendly targets?  And what is the deal with that purple robe which caused the slithery beast to go limp?  If you can stay alive, there may be much to discover in these depths.

To that end, the surgeon by the name of Dustan gets to work with bandages and thread.  Ah, so that's why you got those kits full of goodies: thread!  Hmm, what use could you get out of these other items?  Out of a mirror . . . ?

John isn't (newly-) injured, so he tests his curiosity and tries harvesting some of the cavereed.  You're no expert, but if the grains are food, then why not bring some back?  You estimate you cut about a kilogram of the stuff along the shoreline from which the monster had come.

Speaking of which, Louis breaks a tooth out of the rock hydra's mouth, carefully avoiding the salivary glands that seem to have caused other people problems.

. . . Did the rock hydra just twitch?  No, no it didn't.  And there are various things that could be done about that, anyway: Gary seeks to do the team a great service by removing one of the three heads entirely!  With a mining pick!  Perhaps one of the heads without a damaged eye socket; yeah, that'll look good.



We will not discuss the gory details.  Suffice it to say that vertebrae became . . . dislocated . . . and there was a certain amount of dragging meat across fragmented shale.  And there was the blood.  But Gary, in the end, got a nice clean severed head!  Into the backpack!  Surely it won't leak much.  More.

Alyssa brings over a wheelbarrow and begins moving items around to make space for the mutilated carcass.  Louis and Tohil help.  There's apparently another wheelbarrow; Tohil crafts a plan and helps distribute things in it over to human haulage.  Bob and Dustan seem to have space available, so you foist a few on them, as well as Dwain since he's just standing there.  And that's enough to get everything to fit on two wheelbarrows!

What, the rest of the exiles don't want to help spread the weight any more?  Their loss: if no one asks you for this stuff back, you can just sell it yourself.  (Sell?  Or barter?  Is there even an economy down here?  File that for further consideration.)

Ooh, Bob notices that the older exiles have a chisel and hammer they're not using!  Having been bandaged promptly, you take it upon yourself to commemorate the event with a carving.





You would call this a fine engraving, perhaps even superior!  It depicts a heroic figure (somewhat ambiguous in identity; come on, you don't know these people) striking down a horrible three-headed monster.  Splendid.

It's a moment later that you realize Dwain, the person who struck the final blow, has been watching this whole time.  Initially, Dwain was inspecting the surroundings (report: no other signs of life, and that seeker skull is gone--someone down"stream" will be getting an interesting gift), but now he rolls out a sheet of parchment from his surface kit and takes a graphite rubbing of the engraving.  Ah, to be appreciated!


. . . In other news, I made all discussed inventory changes.  If I forgot any other actions, we can handle those next.  And so?

Okay, got those.  I have thoughts on what you're doing and the results, but, of course, I should just narrate instead of leading you with GM knowledge.  Ah, the collaborator/antagonist role of the GM!

I think I should scout the exits. Whether offloading the excess of goods at HH/RB (for which we may need to rely upon the innate "go thataway, or the other, and you'll get there"-effect) or finding where the cultist scramble that didn't lead here actually led (dodgier, IMO, as it may be a blind-walk trying to find a blind-walk).

There's a couple of likely lobes of cavern to the west of this Fresh Air bit, and then that to the north of the original cavern. (On the way past, or back, review the second carving. If not totally without merit, I should probably take another rubbing.)

Unless anybody has any boating skills or (most importantly) actual floaty-boat-type things, the two water exits are ruled out. But I think we're looking for a likely-looking westward exit, unless someone remembers things better than me (or has a few seconds to review the thread so far, and thus wing it). Alternately, we could Splitter some more cracks, but the supply dwindles and it doesn't guarantee to be productive enough a pasttime to chance it, IMO.

(So, yeah, looking for all possible arrowed exits. Getting 'em on the map. Then let everyone decide which one, whatever they want to do.)

(If the wheelbarrows are made just of wood, maybe they could have dropped everything in it into the water and use it as a boat.)

(Well, that'd mean sacrificing anything not-intrinsically-buoyant, straight off. Including most of our important stuff. Not to mention the effects of water or the possibility of drifting off 'downstream' to set up a happy home with my Seeker Skull. And I think that it was said (many, many pages ago, now) that the tunnel we did come through originally is now water up to the ceiling, but I didn't want to ask if there were any fully-experienced (and equipped!) submariners in our new cohort, just in case I looked foolish.  :P)

Yeah, I know it's unrealistic for applying a bandage to restore all health without, y'know, resting, but I'm using traditional videogame excuses.  I like videogame excuses.  Unless we're in a situation where I can say "but it's not a videogame!" and use that as my excuse.

Also, I'm a little iffy on how long it takes to carve something into a wall.  Perhaps I should just designate Bob as "working on carvings" until you feel you have something else to do?

Yep, my goal with the "fading" water effect is that it is descending away from places you can reach.  Cracks in the wall, tunnels fully submerged, etc.  I use arrows to indicate when you can go in a direction otherwise undepicted on the map.

Now, just waiting on Gary (Coolrune206)!

Gary is suddenly struck with inspiration. He withdraws from the group, whispering quietly, grabbing some random materials from the wheelbarrows. He then begins hollowing out the Hydra head and converting it into a helmet, ignoring any and all impracticality involved.
