"Well, to summarize my form of magic: mages take aether, some call it mana, from the world and shape it into spells. An essence is a chunk of aether, attuned to a specific affinity, then stored within one's body, so it can be used later. Given there's only so much aether a given mage can draw in and attune in a given period of time, essences are a useful way of generating better spells, though they do take longer to do so... yes, I know time is of the essence, but a spell without essences isn't likely to produce the effect we need."

"So, no, I can't take essences from you, even if you have any. Your essences would be attuned to a different affinity than mine. Thanks for the offer, though."
