New York added 3,700 cases that hadn't been previously counted (people who died at home). Might account for the difference.

Goes both ways.  We know an 80 year old who is dying of pneumonia (after having had a stroke last year, and a standard cold that turned into an ear infection).  In the hospital and and now with renal failure.  Been tested 3 times with two definitive negatives and one "not sure", but everyone thinks it's going to be listed as a COVID death anyway.

I mean, there still are the "usual" causes for pneumonia...

Yes, well we're also not counting deaths from people who suffer from corona-unrelated illness but aren't able to get into a hospital because they're full of patients (which is the category which my mother will be most likely to fall into if whatever they were planning to remove in March turns out to be more serious).

In any case the deathrate is already much above the normal rate.

COVID-direct vs COVID-related is really just a difference of "drowned in their own lungs" vs "couldn't get needed care because everyone was trying to stop people from drowning in their lungs on top of normal caseloads" isn't it?

Could also contain "Died from neglect due to overloaded home-health" (due to workers not working, due to covid), or a raft of other death causes immediately after the pandemic, as many people suffer preventable diseases and malnutrition in the economic horror that is sure to come.

I'm still wondering how many apartments they're going to crack open to find people who have been dead for weeks once the lockdowns end and some people don't show up again. I bet it's more than a few.

I'm shocked I haven't heard more apocolyptic prophesy that encouraged a number of suicides during all this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Stimulus checks to citizens will be shortly delayed, as Trump mandated at the last moment that his name must be signed on every check.

I think he's hoping that a significant percentage of the taxpayers won't understand that and will just look at the name.

Donald Trump just stopped all funding to the World Health Organization. In the middle of a pandemic.

Our contribution to the WHO every year is very low: 400 million compared to everything we waste money on. It is a significant part of the WHO's funding though. I hope they respond by blocking all information access to the US and encouraging all countries to close borders with the US.

Yeah, an incredibly obvious attempt to shift the blame.

And yet, people watching FOX still cheer his decision. Humans.. they sometimes make dwarves look smart.  ::)

This is exactly like when dwarves wander into a siege ignoring the burrows.
