I don't know why you'd think the government would do anything to stop neo-Nazi terrorism, since the current regime openly supports it and encourages it on a regular basis.

Stochastic terrorism is the act of encouraging terrorism in general through mass media, without having any particular person you're trying to radicalize. For example, calling all Democrats baby killing monsters or asking for "second amendment people" in general to deal with problems. Calling LGBT people degenerates, or most things the alt right does.

In other words, it's fomenting "lone gunmen."

Mexico is looking into taking legal action against the person or firm who sold the shooter the weapon (which was purchased legally) and looking into the (extremely remote Trump-ain't-gonna-let-it-happen) possibility of extraditing the shooter on terrorism grounds. I'm not exactly sure where they're going with this. I mean, we don't go and take legal action against other countries every time Americans get caught in the middle of a terror attack. For the gun thing, if it was illegally accquired, I can see how they might have jurdicision, but if it was legally purchased in the US, how is that going to work?

It could also be in part a 'Get your own shit together or we'll do it for you! Dammit!' thing, despite having their own shit to get together.

The second part is simple grandstanding. No Mexican court has jurisdiction, and it is very unlikely that a US court would allow a lawsuit to go forward unless there was clear negligence in the handling of the sale. The terrorism charges would probably also fail on the jurisdiction issue, but just might work out depending on how the various cooperation treaties line up. It would be a moot point, since any extradition would have to wait until both Federal and Texas charges were processed, and this guy's looking at a needle both ways.


It is a way for the Mexican government to express displeasure without actually risking diplomatic consequences, and probably is nothing more.

That was what I was trying to point out by asking what deterministic terrorism would look like: all terrorism is stochastic. It's all chaos. The threat they present transcends nationality or ideology and takes precedence over both. Once someone has decided that random violence and destruction is the way to get what they want, what they want matters only in stopping them from ever happening again.

If they don't like the 'socialism' framing, how about a Bible framing, I believe it says in there that we're supposed to be the custodians of the planet* (not in those specific words, but that's the gist of it), in multiple places even.

 
I was actually taught exactly that in church, that we have a responsibility as (to use the same phrase) custodians of the planet, and that God is utterly uninterested in how cool the technological doodad was that we needed to cut down the rainforest for or what have you. A lot of the parables are framed in a way that says hey, I gave you guidelines, and you are expected to follow them wisely and not twist them into a self-serving parody. I know when you're doing that, I'm God, you ass, etc.
 
I am in general happy to confirm (again) that myself and my immediate circle of religionators are perfectly capable of being Christians while also actively supporting things like better/federal gun laws and environmental protections, while also holding an utter disdain for racism. Short version, I am as frustrated and angry as you, if not more so in some ways, that people who claim to share the same beliefs as I do are supporting things so diametrically opposed to them.

No, this guy was not a stochastic terrorist. Donald Trump is a stochastic terrorist. We need to strop media figures from calling for violence and being entirely unaccountable.

I feel like the word terrorist has lost all meaning in America. This isn't directed at any post here or person thereof, but I feel like we do a lot of gymnastics to figure out a way to apply the word terrorist to any negative figure these days. I have seen someone called a sexual terrorist regarding sexual assault. It already has a name that describes how awful it is, adding terrorist is a scare tactic. It removes the meaning behind the word and even detracts from the seriousness of the situation being described if you apply it to every single thing.
 
"Terrorist" is even a romanticized term to a certain subset. Maybe we can just start calling them mass-murderers.

Anyway yeah, stated ironically to this backdrop, Trump has taken actions that fit the definition of Stochastic Terrorism. I believe the pizza-place shooting from way back when is the best example. That's the one where he was like hey, I cant say what's happening or not definitely happening underneath that pizza place, but maybe someone with a lot of guns should go check it out, hey?

It has, but ironically, calling trump a terrorist is apropos.

He threatens people's lives and livelihoods, to get concessions.

To whit-- ICE crackdown threats, and increased ICE enforcement, even against legal US citizens.  Tradewar threats with china.  etc.

That makes him a bona-fide terrorist.

Trump's determined he's going to lose the next election, so he wants to make the economy collapse so that it's a "bad economy" for democrats.

I don't think Trump's actually capable of that. Petty revenge, sure. But actively believing he can lose? That, I doubt.


More likely, he's creating a bad situation so he can then fix it, claiming to have crushed China through his sheer brilliance. That's pretty much his go-to tactic as a businessman, and he thinks he's the CEO of America.
