Taking the high road is never going to work again, but it's a great way to end up hanging out in the smug corner, confident in the knowledge that you stuck to your principles and one day people will see how awful the other guy was... probably... maybe... hopefully?

Yeah that stuff about the medical database really does make me wonder if people are really doing this intentionally now.  What I don't know, though, is if they are doing it with the goal of destruction in mind, or if they really do have some other goal and it just closely looks like "destruction."  There are things that look destructive on the surface but aren't (I have to admit though, this seems unlikely in this particular situation, but I don't just dismiss it out of hand).

I mean, even "budget concerns" are dumb when the cost of maintaining an already existing database has got to be only in the maybe single-digit millions if you're generous.  That's absolutely nothing when it comes to federal budget.  And a database like that is actually the type of thing that should (at least in my mind) be publicly funded, to prevent it from put behind paywalls or whatever.

The republican strategy for cutting the budget is to start with all the cheapest things and work their way up.

Yes, loosing such a database would be a tragedy.

I wonder if it's used outside of the US too.

All knowledge is fake news now.

EDIT: Also, did anyone else notice Trump isn't denying that the Russians hacked the DNC? We've moved a level deeper into the denial hierarchy; we've gone from "never happened" to "but it's not my fault."

Trump and Putin are meeting in Helsinki. I don't know if the actual meeting will have much of note, but Finland's certainly gone a bit overboard for it. The media's been flooded with anything even remotely relevant ever since the meeting was announced. The security arrangements are kinda crazy here. Police and soldiers everywhere, even in the quiet area where I live. Helicopters buzzing around overhead. Parts of the city closed and traffic redirected - getting to work tomorrow will be a pain. I saw Air Force One land just now while driving past the airport. This is probably the biggest gathering of police in my lifetime. It's all very surreal. We/I'm not used to being in the center of global politics for a change.

Speaking of the Democratic field, NY Times article on that very subject today. The big names mentioned: Warren, Sanders, Biden, (Kamela) Harris, (Cory) Booker. The lesser known names: Deval Patrick, former Gov. of Massachusetts; Mayor Eric M. Garcetti of Los Angeles; Mitch Landrieu, former New Orleans Mayor; Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana; various other current and former governors (including Terry McAuliffe); and NY's own Sen. Gillibrand.

How serious any or all of these candidates are varies. Note that the one's who aren't serious contenders seem more seriously likely to get involved (Mayor Garcetti has apparently already told friend's he'll probably run, but I've never heard of the man until today, so ups and downs).

My aim of the day: research the b-tier and c-tier Democratic candidates so I can say more about them than what positions they held. I know some stuff about a few of them: for example, Gillibrand has been building up a political network by successfully picking out and endorsing female democratic candidates across the board in recent months, and has amassed a significant winning record (and, with that, significant political clout). Terry McAuliffe has his record turning red purple, Warren has a big history of left-wing grassroots action against the banks. And of course Ernie Anders is Ernie Anders, and Eternal Joe is still Biden his time. But there are so many others... we might need to make another March-Madness style thing.

Medical knowledge is irrelevant, because if god intends for you to survive, you will.  Right?
God helps those who helps themselves. That's Matthew 25:45 right? No...?

When Trump decides "a lot of people are telling me The Art of the Deal is better than the Bible, you know Jesus didn't do so good, no golf courses, no casinos, real low energy, I heard he took a nap for three days once" and founds Trumpentology, it will be. Come to think of it, I wonder what declaring himself to be God would do to his poll numbers. Presumably Miller has calculated it'd be at least mildly negative since he hasn't yet.

On a more serious note, I've got a bit of time and inclination to go look the possible Democratic candidates up. What would we like to know to do some sort of March Madness-style predictions?

Fairly sure that is not in the bible.

It's uh... basically the previous page?  Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Three Servants.  If God gives you an opportunity and you don't capitalize on it for profit, you're wicked and worthless, and don't deserve it.  Like, the bad servant even repays the full loan, and the Master's response is to gift *that* money amongst the rich investors.

Edit:  Just to drive it home:
Quote
28 “Then he ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. 30 Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
So not just prosperity gospel, but those who save their money in couch cushions go to...  I'm not saying it's hell, but it's an outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth.

However, the Bible does also support poverty as a virtue.  I'm not claiming that it's consistent, just that there is justification for prosperity gospel.

The money in that parable is a blatant allegory for the Holy Spirit. It is a call for Jesus's followers to go out and preach, not just sit quietly at home. It is a further restatement of the theme of Matthew 5:14-16.

The holy spirit is blatantly something that can be loaned, retracted and then redistributed to others?  I don't think that's obvious whatsoever.  I agree that it's in the context of the Kingdom of Heaven, but I read it as God loving the productive, giving them further rewards on Earth, and damning the lazy.
