The Republicans kinda didn't have a crowded field in 2016 tho, by the time most people started seriously following the election it got pared down significantly.  Nothing like 2012, where seemly every candidate had a moment where they pulled ahead up to 1st or 2nd place.

Wut, you don't remember the 'kiddie table' debates? there were so many people in the early debates that it was very unwieldy, and so many that they had to shunt some lower polled candidates into a second debate.

If that's not a crowded field, then I don't know what is.

Well, one would hope that with the chaos of a crowded field the DNC wouldn't be able to skew support as much as they'd like, allowing for an underdog like Trump (but saner) to take the primary unexpectedly instead of Hillary Clinton 2.0.

Unfortunately, Hope left with Obama, so I'm kind of resigned to voting Hillary Clinton again until the Dems figure out that people just don't fucking like her.  :-\

The worst bit is that there are plenty of actually-left (or at least left of centre or liberal) women politicians around as congresscritters or what-have-you that could be their "first female president" token while ALSO not being basically a Republican who doesn't hate gay people in a pantsuit.

IIRC, Maxine Waters and Kamala Harris have been in the news a fair bit lately, and have rather progressive stances. They both qualify, as far as I know.

I suspect that the DNC is using the current uncertainty around the Mueller investigation and what it might uncover to excuse holding off on mentioning anyone as a possible candidate, since anyone they pick will have half the party calling them a dangerous socialist radical and the other half calling them a mewling centrist pawn while they're also derided as an establishment hack for not denouncing Pelosi and Schumer hard enough and an unelectable fringe idealist for not agreeing with them more profusely. Then, of course, they're simultaneously oppressing every demographic they aren't exploiting and pandering to everyone they aren't arrogantly taking advantage of.

Democrats work best when there's one specific thing for all the perpetually angry people to be intersectionally angry about, and Trump's been so diversely offensive that they now spend their time attacking each other over disagreements about which thing he did was worst, because there's no point proving that one's actual opponents are morally inferior when there are allies to sanctimoniously "hold accountable." Absent a single overriding reason to crow about all Republicans being traitors, the Democrats will destroy any candidate they can find long before the Republicans can.

I think it has more to do with "until the 2018 election, we don't know what issues are riling people up, and which ones will fizzle."

Isn't that kind of normal, though?

Isn't Maxine Waters like some kind of nega-Trump? She seems at the center of a constant whirlwind of negative attention.

I think so. I don't remember Kerry or Obama being talked about much until after midterms. Gore, yes, because he was the VP of a very popular President, and thus had an "incumbency" advantage. Likewise, Romney and McCain gained most of their momentum shortly before their election cycles began. 2016 was in many ways an anomaly, where both parties had "obvious" candidates well in advance, only for the "obvious" GOP candidate to get bowled over by a lack of filter.

Or, in other words, we don't have a great swarm of Democratic nominee candidates yet because it isn't normal to have swarms of candidates yet.

EDIT:

"nega-Trump" is a pretty good description of Waters.

While I get the rest of the conversation and understand that it's absurdly early... if Maxine Waters is really all there is... please bring back Oprah.

Before people cringe about TV stars running for president, feel in your heart for your children's generation when most of the candidates will probably be Youtube celebrities.

As far as I can tell, Maxine Waters is mainly in the news because she goes off on Trump and then people say, "That was too much." So eh? I don't have am informed view of the Democratic field.

And now for your daily reminder the republican party wants to destroy America. Citing budget cuts (and being blatant corruption and malfeasance), HHS is set to turn off (without backup, without an archive made available, without someone else lined up to take over) a major database of medical guidelines.

I guess it'll be interesting, if morbid, to find out if someone tracking fatality rate/lifespan pays attention to see if this fucking bullshit quantifiably kills off american citizens.
