Yeah, it's a Pareto-optimal thing, which I get. (Of course, the same argument could apply to...oh, I don't know...border security?)

But saying the air needs to be dirtier, because it'll make kids healthier in the long-run is a far cry from "the air needs to be dirtier because it's too expensive to keep it really clean", which is the Pareto-optimum argument.
Y'know, it just now hit me that's a pro-vaccine stance the fellow's. Anyone got an idea of if the critter is at least not an anti-vaxxer, or is it just the Nth case of blatant doublethink?

Though re: arsenic, don't we have a couple things we normally eat that has trace amounts? Apples or almonds or something like that? Would think that would be a potential testing/observation venue without the small problem of having to go through the whole "convincing the ethics board to let you feed people arsenic" thing.

You're thinking of cyanide in the case of apples and almonds. Arsenic is an elemental metal, and thus you see it more in fish- which are basically chock full of poisonous heavy metals.

Ah, there we go. Knew it was something but memory et al, bleh.

Bright side, fish is both ubiquitous and often varied enough in terms of local contaminant concentration you'll have different areas getting different degrees of dosage. If we really want to see if bits of arsenic is beneficial, that may be one of your best bets.

I think it's a long-standing confusion, not your memory. I definitely read that it was arsenic in apple seeds many, many years ago. And I'm quite certain I never read about cyanide in apple seeds. I have no reason why I would mix those two things up. To me the first thing that comes to mind for arsenic is a solid powder, and cyanide as "cyanide gas". Arsenic was common rat poison, cyanide was this high-tech thing they only talked about in spy movies. Not necessarily accurate, idk, but those are the strong mental associations I have of those two things from my childhood. There's no way I'd have mixed up a report about cyanide with arsenic.

It's not memory - the sources were just wrong.

I think the reason for this is that in the English-speaking world, arsenic was a more familiar poison, so when people heard that there's poison in apple seeds, almonds etc, that got mutated into "arsenic in apple seeds".

However here's an important point:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenic#Applications
Quote
Arsenic was also used in various agricultural insecticides and poisons. For example, lead hydrogen arsenate was a common insecticide on fruit trees,[54] but contact with the compound sometimes resulted in brain damage among those working the sprayers.

So it's possible that this was in fact true, but it got conflated with the cyanide in seeds thing later on, to become "arsenic in apple seeds".

There also IS arsenic in apples, as with most organisms, and sometimes it bioaccumulates until the measured concentration of arsenic in apple products surpasses drinking water thresholds or shows up in a QC assay and people get worried.

So while there's always amygdalin in apple seeds (which releases cyanide ions when digested), there can be arsenic too. It's far from toxic at those levels, though.

Right. Next time I'll say "deadly stuff that kills you dead into the baby food" to prefer an unintended derail.

You are like a little baby. Watch this:

"If Obama hadn't interfered with the jobs of the brave men and women on our oil pipelines, and we've got just the best pipeline workers don't we, then it would have been ready on schedule and underbudget to deliver power to our homes and replaced his socialist 'shovel ready' spending programs. Just a terrible President, we're gonna keep feeling the effects of his anti-American policies for years to come. People ask me, they say 'Donald, the Keystone, it goes through Indian land'. What Indian land? There's no, nobody's ever even seen any Indians around the Keystone. They just want us to get a rotten deal, that's all it is.
