is somebody seriously arguing that hiring an extremist armed group to "event security" is a politically neutral act.

I mean obviously its not "lol america nazis now" but the point people are making is that for all people joke about "lol the other side are nazis", armed volunteer 'protection groups' are a notable feature of the start of any fascist movement and pointing that out is hardly doomsaying.

I honestly don't see a big difference between hiring a militia and hiring, say, the Angels. You're going to local low-budget contractors. It's not necessarily saying anything beyond "I support my constituents" in this case.

I'm specifically remembering the arizona sherrif who enforced the racial profiling laws bringing his huge personal militia to a protest against him.

The word militia also means something, even if Americans have forgotten that.  It literally refers to a military force.  If an organization wants to call themselves a militia I'm going to treat them like one.

And we all know the terrifying body count and felony list they racked up during the Ferguson riots.

Edit: In fact, the average citizen is almost certainly a lot safer around them than then would be the ultra-militarized police that were cruising Ferguson at the time.

Indeed. The presence of four heavily armed white guys in a black community violently protesting on the anniversary of a young black man being killed by a white cop is a most sensible idea, regardless of why they were there. Much like poking a bear in the face.

Two wrongs don't make a right.  The cops did their job terribly but at least it was their job to do.  Throwing these chucklefucks into the mix has zero positive benefits and very obvious downsides.

That's what US militias are, a bunch of military cheerleaders with none of the purpose or training of real soldiers.  The harmless ones just want to dress up their guns like dolls and have fun on the range.  The rest exist on a scale from "openly bigoted" at best to "plotting to blow up a post office" at worst.

I dunno man, considering how things went I think going for private security is a "lesser evil" situation compared to relying on public security. Would it have been better to go for black security agents? Maybe, but that's assuming that the folks in question would've had the clout and money to discriminate based on race and still get people of comparable competence. That's not necessarily a safe assumption; not everyone who can be lumped under a label like "the man" is actually individually powerful.
