Scavenge around for cool stuff.

Please include you character sheet, spoiler'd, with all of your future IC posts. Thanks! (Also you have 200 drachmas in your inventory that you didn't spend, and Nate has one bronze weapon of your choice.)

You and Nate spend a while searching for anything of use in the rubble. It's hard work, considering that some of the rubble you have to lift weighs more than you, but with Nate's help you're able to uncover some... valuables. You think. Perhaps they'll be worth something.
You get

Cheap brass ring
Arrow x 4
Pilum - 4 attack power, 8 reach, one use

You return to your now dead fire, and gaze at the grey sky.

"Damnit Lance, this city sure has gone to shit. I just wish I had some smokes on me. Let's get our bearings and go somewhere that isn't in the open streets, I'm sick of seeing corpses."

Get my bearings, whereabouts am I? What's around me?

Also make sure my crossbow is loaded, just in case.

You and D'rkza leave the open venue and go to a smaller sidestreet, where you have a lower chance of being ambushed.

"Haven't had a good flagon of ale in too damn long." you hear Lance grumble.

You do a little bit of reconnaissance in the area around you. You're in the Pewter district - a poorer area, and one of the first to be invaded by underlings. Most of them have moved on by now, but a few stragglers may remain. Luckily, nothing dangerous seems to be near where you are. You do, however, find a point of interest. You see a small barricade on a street, with lit torches lining it. You decide not to investigate just yet.

Keep going.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wynnter follows you as you continue in the direction of the Sealing Wall's 3rd gate. At least, you think you're headed in the right direction, but only time will tell. You make a little headway in the direction of the wall. You pass the rubble that was once Electrum District's Council Hall. It was where most of the city officials met before the crisis. Now they're mostly dead or in hiding.

You press on, trying not to think about what the city was like before the disaster. It may not have been your hometown, but you certainly spent quite a while here.

"I hear ya, I could go for a stiff drink right now too."
Bernard says to Lance, while scanning the area. His eye falls on the lit barricade, and he taps Lance on the shoulder.
"Hey, looks like we've got live ones there. Can't see who it is from here though. Keep your pike ready, we're going to go see who's still awake in this nightmare."

Go and take a closer look at the barricade. Keep our distance until we can see who is manning it. If it's friendlies or at least not-underlings, approach and make ourselves known.

If there's underlings, stay out of sight and keep my crossbow ready to shoot them should they spot and attack us.

Look around for a good place to set up camp.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You halt. The sun falls in the horizon, and night will soon be upon you. Although they don't hesitate to hunt at midday, underlings are nocturnal creatures, and are most dangerous in the dark. Wynnter points out a relatively undamaged building to you.

"I think we'll safer than not in that building. It has two stories, no windows, and a mostly undamaged roof. What do you say about setting up camp there?"

Coming up with no better alternatives, you and Wynnter enter the house. A handful of broken vases are scattered about the floor, but the house is in near pristine condition otherwise. You briefly search it for valuables, but as you expect, find nothing of interest. There are two straw mattresses in the house, and each of them are suitable. You patch up a hole in the roof with a few blankets, muffling any sounds that may exit out of it. Wynnter nods his approval of the new dwelling.

"I hear ya, I could go for a stiff drink right now too."
Bernard says to Lance, while scanning the area. His eye falls on the lit barricade, and he taps Lance on the shoulder.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You approach the barricade and shout at a medium volume, stating your intentions. Two silhouettes appear on top of the barricade and hurl the torches down in front of you, cloaking them in darkness. One of them throws a handful of powder in the flames. Instantly, there's a bright white flash, and you can't see anything. You cover your eyes against the glare.

"Who are you, and why do you come hither? If this is another trick of you raiders, I'll make you regret ever coming here!"

You quickly explain your plight and your good intentions. After a second of silence, you see one of the silhouettes descend from the barrier and open the gate. Two halberd wielding guards come out and escort you inside after stamping out the flame. A blindfold is put on you, and you're separated from Lance. When the blindfold is removed, you're in some sort of prison cell. A guard stands outside, next to a table on which your weapons are set.

"It's the standard procedure." the guard explains. "Ever since the disaster, ya can't trust nobody. I've got a good feelin' about you, though."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Restart the fire and rest for the night. Nate and I will keep watch in 2 hour shifts.

You watch as the sun dips below the gargantuan Sealing Wall.

~

Night falls upon you. All of you sleep - some in houses and camps, others locked away in cells.

"Nice to meet you, too." Bernard grubles, eyes adjusting to the light after having the blindfold taken off. "Bernard Smiles, formerly with the Kathaan expiditionary forces, third battalion, first squad. Up until recently with the Kathaa Constabulary. Who might you you people be?

Also, where have you taken my friend? He's about shoulder height, big beard, stronger than he looks and has a bit of temper."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The guard chuckles at the mention of Lance.

"The Dwarf, eh? I'd say that a bit of a temper is an understatement. Took three of our strongest men to hold 'im in place! Anyways, he's doin' quite fine. Ya said yer name was Bernard? Pleased ta meet ya. The name's Gret."

You and Gret shake hands through the bars of your cell. You ask him a few questions, and he gives you some possibly important information.

"This fort was founded 'bout a week after the disaster started. At least, that's what I've heard. The guy who founded it, an old alchemist who goes by the name of Elzukir, is the guy in charge here. That bright flash ya saw last night was a concoction o' his. He's been taking in survivors ever since he built the stronghold, and it's grown quite large since. The reason we have ya all locked up here is simply because we've had some bad experiences with Raiders, as have a lot of other safeholds like this one here. About two months ago, a couple o' Raiders limped up to the gate, pretendin' to be wounded. Elzukir opened the gates for 'em and let 'em in. That night, more o' the scoundrels amassed outside the gates. The ones that snuck in opened the gate for the ones outside, and the whole horde poured through. Normally, a fort would have fallen right then, but Elzukir an' his potions drove the scum right off, they did. That's why we cage our new arrivals now."

You and Gret spend a little while talking. In the middle of a debate about how high the Sealing Wall is, two guards enter the room, followed by an old yet muscular man wearing a flowing cloak. Two more guards follow him, and shut the door to the room.

"Elzukir." says Gret, respectfully.

Elzukir nods in acknowledgement and turns towards you.

"Hello, friend. I am Elzukir. I trust that your Gaoler has educated you about who I am, and why I must do this."

You nod, solemnly.

"Wonderful. Now, I wish to make this quick, since it is enjoyable for neither of us. I am going to ask you a series of questions, and I'd like you to answer them with either a nod or a shake of your head, meaning yes and no respectively. Do you understand?"

You nod.

"Let us begin, then. Did you come alone?"

You shake your head.

"Did two people come with you?"

You shake your head again.

"Did one Dwarf come with you?"

You nod.

"Are you a Raider?"

You shake your head.

"Do you seek to leave this city, or purge it of the underlings that corrupt it?"

You nod your head.

"Do you want to stay here, and if so, how long? You may speak if you wish."

What should you say...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the morning, the duo awaken, eat whatever breakfast they have, and move out. They investigate any interesting ruins, and defend themselves against any threats.

You leave your campsite after snuffing out your fire and kicking dirt over your tracks. You head East, towards the Lead District. It was the home of a number of lowlives and thieves, but now it's mostly empty. While Raiders are scarce there, underlings are a bit more plentiful. You scout out the area, and find it to be mostly safe. You do stumble upon one interesting thing. Rather, Nate does.

"Zach! You might wanna have a look at this."

You come and stand near Nate. Fresh underling corpses, at least ten, are scattered about everywhere, torn to pieces by some feral beast. A trail of blood leads North. Needless to say, you start heading South. Anything that can take on ten underlings is. It something you want to mess with. You eventually spot the ruins of a guard's barracks, and search it. You find a slain guard, and take his mostly undamaged greaves. They aren't exactly good, but they'll do for the time being.
You get

Tin greaves - 0.5 defensive power

New enemy in beastiary: underling

Added armor mechanics to OP

Look around for supplies.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You look around for useful supplies. You don't find much, but you're able to find a handful of coins in the drawers of a nearby house.
You get

Drachma x 13

You and Wynnter are returning to your camp when you hear a savage growl, unmistakably that of an underling. You whirl around just as the foul creature pounces at you, and smash it in the face as it hurtles towards you. The blow staggers the creature, but also makes it angry.

Combat log

The underling pup tries to bite you, but you dodge!
Wynnter strikes the creature with his longsword, severing one of its legs!
You slash at the underling pup, but miss!
The underling pup charges Wynnter, but he dodges.
Wynnter stabs the underling pup in the left hind foot!
You slash the underling pup in the head, killing it!

You return to your camp, glad that you encounter no more underlings on the way back.

"I don't know honestly, I'd have to discuss it with Lance first. I can't very well make decisions on his behalf, and we're in this together. Still, we're in the constabulary to help people, so I suppose we could stay here if we can make ourselves useful, until either we or you come up with a more long-term plan for this problem. I'd love to take our city back from the underlings, but I'm undecided on wether it wouldn't just be a better idea to get out and go anywhere else instead.

Purgin the Underlings is all good and well, but we'd need the manpower or some kind of miracle weapon to do so, and then we're still stuck with a ruin of a city. If the infrastructure is too far gone for us to resettle the people after the Underlings are gone, we might as well just plan on bugging out right now."

He shrugs

"I honestly don't know what the best course of action is, either for me personally or the city as a whole. I'm just a soldier, all this thinking makes my head hurt a little. Up until recently all I had to deal with were pickpockets and other assorted scum."

Guys, remember, to equip something just put a lil' (equipped) tag before it in your inventory. Makes things a lot easier for me. Thanks.

Also, a shitty MS paint map has been added to the OP!

Look around for other settlements without revealing ourselves to them yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You wander around a bit more in the Electrum District, looking for survivors. You indeed do find survivors, but they don't exactly seem friendly. You instantly recognize them to be Raiders - most of them look like those you'd expect to be the robbing and murdering type. They lounge about the narrow side street you see them, numbering about five. It seems that they see neither you nor Wynnter, as they keep talking and chuckling. You attempt to return the way you came, but you accidentally trip on a large rock. Your blade clatters to the ground with a metallic clang. You scramble to your feet and make a mad dash away with Wynnter, but three more Raiders block the way you came. You turn, and see more. They're everywhere.

"Well, look what we've got here!"

One of the brigands, a mean looking man wearing an eyepatch, steps out of the ring that surrounds you. You surmise that he's about six feet tall, and weighs more than twice as much as Wynnter. He chuckles as you look in vain for an escape route. Wynnter lowers his sword to the ground.

"Take it. Just let us pass in peace." says Wynnter, head bowed in shame and defeat.

The large man chuckles.

"We don't want no trouble, now. You don't seem to have anything of value on yerselves. We already have more than enough cheap trinkets like yours, no. We don't want your swords. We want you. Take 'em away, boys!"

Three of the highwayman's grunts step out of line and seize you. One of them grins evilly before hitting you with a cudgel.

Everything goes black.

~

When you awake  everything is still black. Rats chirp somewhere nearby, and the humid air smells fetid. You know almost immediately that you're underground, somewhere. It's dark to the point of blindness. You feel that both your hands and feet are bound. Gradually, as your eyes get used to the darkness, you see Wynnter's unconscious form next to you, bound with rusty chains just as you are. Not wanting to listen to the scurrying of rats any longer, you go to sleep.

~

You wake up when a bright light falls directly onto you, blinding and hurting your eyes. Four ruffians step into the room where you're held from behind a thick iron door, bearing torches. You recognize one of them as the man with the eyepatch who captured you.

"Rise and shine!" says a moderately high pitched voice.

One of the brigands, seemingly younger than the rest, steps away from the crowd. He's average height, of slim build, with dusty brown hair and a mischievous grin. He seems a little bit on the boyish side, although he is showing a bit of age. He wields a pair of long, sharp daggers, each with an emerald embedded in the hilt. These Raiders must be richer than their brethren. He and inspects first you and then Wynnter. You glare at him, but say nothing.

"Listen up." he says, sheathing his weapons. "I'm quite sure that you don't like being chained up in here. After all, who could blame you? Rats aren't exactly fun conversation. I'd guess that you want to leave this dungeon, yes?"

You say nothing.

"You're a quiet pair, that's for sure. Now, I'm willing to let you out, if you simply comply to my terms. I'll assume that you're listening, and state them now.

You can either join us or rot away here. Make up your minds fast, or else I might retract my deal and just let you starve. Osric here will stay with you, and you can tell him if you want to join us."

With that, the man and his two guards exit, leaving you and Wynnter in the dungeon with eyepatch man, who is apparently named Osric. You're startled when Wynnter talks to you.

"It's your choice, Vothaeth. I will stand by you no matter what you choose."

You secretly wonder if you can make an escape. Surely, Osric has the key to that iron door on him...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Equip the greaves on Nate. Keep heading south. Same drill as before.

You head South, and you presume that you've made it to the Southern part of the Iron District, although you can't be sure. Abandoned factories and collapsed metal works lie everywhere. Perhaps you can figure out a way to start one up and melt down metal...

Later, that is. You press Southward, and make it into the Antimony District. There's a major underling feeding ground in the center, however, and you stop where you are to set up camp. At least you're closer to the wall. Nate sighs and sits down on a fallen tree.

"I don't think I can keep this up for much longer. I'm slowly going crazy. We've got to get out of here, Zach."

You don't know how much more you can take yourself.

Converse with Elzukir

Elzukir nods.

"I commend your loyalty to your companion. Whatever your wish is, you are free to go. I'll have my guards bring him presently. He's in a bit of a... temper. I'd hope that you can calm him down."

Elzukir mutters something to a nearby guard, who rushes off. Minutes later, he returns. You can't help but burst out laughing when you see Lance completely chained up from head to toe. He growls when you laugh at his predicament, but you know that he's a good natured fellow. At least, when you don't throw him in a prison cell and truss him up.

"What are you laughin' at, Sarge? 'N why do they chain me up but not you? This whole damnable place can burn for all I care."

You talk to Lance for a while, and he seems dismayed when he notices that you're considering staying at the outpost for a while. He thinks for a second, and then sighs.

"Ya know I'm with you no matter what stupid ideas ya get, Sarge. Course, I won't spare ya when this this whole damn predicament bites ya in the ass."

Seems like the decision is up to you. Elzukir offers to give you a few supplies if you decide to leave, or a place to stay if you want to live in the fort for a while.
