You waste the rest of your clip shooting at a perfectly good base. Then you reload, and spend half of your next clip shooting away some of the rocks, making it much harder to get across. Congrats!

You can tell if a bar of something is missing because it is black instead of it's original colour, look at the hearts for an example. If something is grey, it means it's locked, and you can't get back up to that amount of health again.
