The Forest, littered with overgrown ruins, with plenty of wood, animals and forgotten knowledge to at your disposal, it would be ideal.
+1. Not too away from civilization, ruins to harvest easy materials for necromancer's tower, and a plenty of life to snuff out.

Pretty sure we can gain some sort of life or mana-leeching later on (the ravenous, hungry dead, us feeling the life in the grass, are pretty strong hints towards it)
As such, being in a place full of life, might become yet another boon.

Really? Another necromancer game? Christ, I wish this fad would end already.

All fanfics are heresy, each and every one, especially the shipping ones. Those are by far the worst.

Wrong forum for that "fad" to ever end. Even the opposite, life, is a trope on here already, with such powers eventually abused to make living monstrosities far more perverse than any re-animated flesh, bone or soul ever could hope to be.
As it is, on bay12, any necromancy option is far more likely to be choosen, than others.

(Should you really want to have a in-depth discussion about your disdain for the over-use of necromancy in bay12 forum games, then the "Gaming Block" thread, would be a fine place to do so. Heck, you kind of have a point, too - I only know of one night-troll game, for that matter.)

Remember, you are no mortal Mage, rather, you are a WIZARD, possessing unimaginable power and potential! Should you survive, ALL magical disciplines shall be open to you. Or you could specialize in Necromancy and go full-on Demi-Lich, the choice is yours.

The beginning question was to determine your starting skills. Remember, if you have any questions about the setting or magic in general, ask.

*DAY ONE*

After a full week of travelling under the cover of night, you and your gristly entourage have arrived at Utnik Forest. Hundreds of spans wide, filled with dense groves, ancient ruins, savage tribes, and the occasional pioneer settlement. It is filled with life, and should suit your needs quite nicely.

You've arrived at a reasonable location. A small cluster of hills, covered in forestation, there's certain to be some sort of cave here. The hills are surrounded by heavily forested flatland. The nearest township is a good two week's travel away, and supposedly, there hasn't been much tribal activity in the area recently. You pause to take stock of your supplies.

12 Zombies, and 5 Skeletons stand in a small group five paces behind you. When you started to travel, only 13 followed you, but as you went through the plains, you encountered a few travelers. They could not be allowed to spread word of what they witnessed, so you killed them. Killed, killed, the word... doesn't mean as much anymore... You reanimated their corpses, giving them new life in your service. Their corpses are fresh, and haven't yet rotted, so they're Zombies, at least for now.

You have no food remaining, your clothes are filthy, and the most valuable item you own is your walking stick. Luckily, one of the travelers you, killed, was a purveyor of goods, and had a small stash of cheap tools. Priceless, to you. 3 Wood-Cutting Axes, 2 Pickaxes, and 1 Carpenter's Hammer. These tools are currently in the clutches of your undead companions. The undead await your command, and you are hungry, both for sustenance, and knowledge.

What do you do?

First priority is food, then defenses and only after that we can focus on study.

For food, look around for fruits and any easy game.
Defenses should start out in form of clearing with wooden walls. Once basic walls are in place we can slowly reinforce them with stone blocks while studying unlife.

Sustenance, huh? How about this then;

Scavenger of Scavengers
Find a small clearing, with the sky clearly visible overhead. Order your zombies to simply lay down, while we hide in a tree or bush, with the zombies within reach of our smite. Before long, crows will find their carcasses, then come vultures and possibly wolves. Smite them all.

(Edit)Eyes in the Sky
We also might want to animate a few of the birds, if possible. We can see through the eyes of our servants, at least the human ones. Even if "lesser" beings come with lesser senses, some undead ravens for scouting should be more than worth it.
