Fuck you Microsoft
« on: September 20, 2016, 06:50:28 am »

So, I decided to give the 'free' version of minecraft that comes as a gift with windows 10 a try.
That forced me to make a Microsoft account.

Said Microsoft account now hijacked my computer, replacing my normal start up log in password with logging into my computer with a microsoft account, which basically means I no longer have access to my computer unless have internet connection and am permanently connected to my Microsoft account.

Turned out their 'free' gift version of minecraft is just a 90 minutes playtime demo. So I deleted it in frustration.

But now I am stuck with the Microsoft account log in whenever I reboot my computer or want to take it out of sleep mode. How do I get rid of it, and get back to my normal computer password / ASUS facial recognition login?

EDIT: did I mention fuck you, Microsoft?

Linux is required.

Turn "fuck you Microsoft" into a performative.

Don't know why you put up with it?   ;)

My reaction to FPS drops in Borderlands 2 with Windows 8.1/Windows 10. (seriously, this game is FOUR YEARS OLD, and yet it LAGS on my ASUS ROG G751JY notebook?)
My reaction to Micro$hite collecting personal data. (Why they need it? I dunno.)
My reaction to Windows 10 committing suicide bombing. (When i was back from school, my notebook didn't respond. I rebooted it... And it loaded BIOS. After some research, i discovered that SSD hard drive went missing. GG, Micro$hite.)

Spoiler: Aftermath (click to show/hide)

TL;DR: Windows 8.1/10 sucks. Windows 7 is only good OS from Micro$hite i used.

It is most definitely not true. I use W10 + Microsoft Account daily with or without an internet connection. I actually quite like that it syncs everything between my computers automatically.

I would still prefer W7, but that operating system is starting to get quite old now.

I am reasonably sure you can go back to just having a normal, specific-to-your-computer login, though I can't remember how to do it.

Similar thing happened to me when I got a new PC. Set up the computer for use of myself and my wife, single account. Logged into my e-mail through the start bar, and suddenly computer wants me to log in with my e-mail address and password. Er, no. Back to normal now...

Ever since the Win10 upgrade shit, I've been checking the details for every single update. Unfortunately, you can't simply check the details from Windows Update. I have to right click an entry, choose "Copy details", paste into notepad, select and copy the link, then finally paste that into my browser. I had to do this 200+ times (between two computers) due to backlog from the "Searching for updates forever" bug, which I recently found out how to fix (manual download and install of a certain rollout patch, with the internet unplugged to avoid the issue on the fix itself.) Fuck you Microsoft.

Suddenly today:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3184143
It sounds too good to be true.

Edit: Looks like I can go directly to an update's KB article by clicking "More information". It even opens in the default browser, not IE. Slightly-less fuck you, MS.

From what I can recall from the dark time I still worked with Windows, you can copy over your desktop shortcuts (and whatever misc you put there), as well as the user folders like documents, pictures, etc.

I even did some funky stuff like copying over the user registry, but that got a bit funky here and there. Stuff like the start menu/screen configuration is also loaded in some retarded registry keys in binary format which are bound to the account they were made on, so you get to re-do those.

My last windows related project was actually to build a 'Microsoft Deployment Toolkit' setup, which can paste a pre-made windows image on a computer through a network boot and then make some scripted configuration changes and installations for more specific needs.

One glitch that came up there (and got one of my colleagues to basically rage-quit the project) was that when making your Windows image, if you made ANY modification to the windows apps or start menu/screen at all, any install done with that image would just plainly refuse to boot. This issue was born in 2012 along with Windows 8 and fairly widely reported, and was still around end of 2015 in Windows 10.

That wasn't the only issue this thing had either, there is a guide somewhere where during the install of your image-Windows you have to unplug the network cable at specific points to keep the thing from doing some stupid things which would again give you a useless dud of an image. The best part there is that you don't notice the image is borked until after you install the image build, run all 200-something updates (AAARGH), finished configuring it the way you want, then ran sysprep, packaged the whole install into an image, uploaded it to the deployment server and then ran the image on a test machine.

All in all it was still a fun project to work on, I got it working in the end and it was a huge improvement over 'intern with a Windows install disk' process. But god was that image building process a pain in the posterior.

I work with Linux now. Much less headache, can recommend to anyone.

Micro$hite.
Micro$hite
HAHAHA SO EDGY SO FUNNY SO ORIGINAL YOU ARE HILARIOUS.

Having a Microsoft account linked to your computer doesn't disable login when offline. If you're not connected to the internet, your computer will just accept the last valid password that it knows of.

And as for the password. Here are some options:
1.) Change your MS account password to the one you want on your computer.
2.) Set up a PIN password.
3.) Use the W10 "Hello" thing for biometrics. Not sure if it's compatible with your facial recognition thing, but it should be.

Password-related stuff can all be done from Accounts -> Sign-in Options in Settings. Just search "sign-in options" in the search bar and it should be the first result.

EDIT: Even better! Look! It's on the first result!

does nt solve the underlying pathos:

microsoft wants you tied to their ecosystem, and wants to know every time you have a bowel movement.

every application you run, from thier store or not.
every site you visit and how often.
who your friends and family are.

no.  sidesepping the overreach just slightly so that you get a local account back does not make it all better.

I'm addressing the OP, pal. They posted in Life Advice.
And hell, I don't even care about the points you mentioned, even if they weren't embellished. But the point of my post was to solve the problem that OP had. If they just wanted to vent in a Microsoft hate echochamber, there are better boards than Life Advice.

The reason people are so annoyed with Windows 10 is not because its unusable or even less usable, but because of frankly ridiculous lengths M$ goes to to drive win7/8 users to win10/cloud ecosystem and how badly it misrepresents both of those things.

Windows 10 during launch did not have full and proper hardware support on all the machines it was being pushed to despite what MS reps claimed, the automated upgrade process was liable to make things go pretty screwy, and all the ways win10 tried to smuggle itself on to win7 and 8 machines was just plain ridiculous. Even the text with the options during installation where you can disable some (though not all) of the data scraping features almost looks like a parody of the typical 'user experience' drivel marketers are so fond of. Then it tries to hide some of those options by making the screen scrollable, but giving no indication at all that its scrollable. And then there is the way it hides the ability to NOT use an MS account during install.

All in all the impression we all get is MS is duping, misleading and outright harassing users into their sweet, sweet ad revenue farm. Regardless of how true that is, or whether or not its possible to force it into being a functional, no bullshit OS that doesn't sell your porn preferences to the highest bidder, that is how so many regard Windows 10 now.

Edit: Oh, and in the spirit of Life Advice... Linux, unless you want to play Windows only games. Try Linux Mint, can be installed and configured without ever even opening the terminal.
