Diplomacy. We're shit at it, but it's worth a try. Odd's half-decent, at least. She can probably do most of the talking; we'll be the big stick, and keep the boys in line. An incident could toss out the whole thing.

Plus, if we get on good terms with them, not only do we get a trading partner, but we can raid their rivals for Thralls.

Okay... that's ominous. But the gods of war thing implies that, at the very least, we'd want more warriors for a night raid and that it'd probably spark an unrelenting war with the natives. So effectively we may want to stay our blades until we're more established.

The runes to your memory bit is the weirder of the two statements. Either means we need to consult the runes more, or merely learn of and about them.

So diplomacy is the best bet here.

I think it means we'd need Odd for anything we do during the day. Which in this case, I think means for diplomacy.

Though Mjoll's not bad either. They can be good cop bad cop, I suppose.

Runes to your memory=>Memorial=>Death

At first I thought that the second part might mean that we're going to want to pay close attention to everything that goes on,  but some googling suggests that this might be the answer.

Proposal: Do some scouting to try to get more information about the village, like how many people are there or if they seem to be armed. We can also see if they have any obvious signs of likely to murder us on contactness.

We can decide to raid, diplomacy, or pull back depending on what we can find out.

+1 to Mjoll being interested in our wife's well being, we should see about rewarding that idea.

I prefer diplo right now. We can always come back and raid them later.

That makes more sense, actually.

So if we raid at night, we spark war. If we attack during the day, we're boned.

Yeah, makes sense now that I think about it. Guess this means we push on forward with our lacklustre diplomatic abilities!

@Turn Results: That all went much better than I expected. We jumped from 300 Hacksilver in gross income to 800 Hacksilver in gross income. With 770 Hacksilver, we can start up Logging, Pelts, and probably either start up Mead, start up Mining, or start up our own smithy, all of which will probably total to something between 300-400 additional income. And then next turn we can start up even more things as well as get other trade relations going. Soon we'll be able to spend all the silver we want all the time.

I don't know if I agree with the diplomatic approach, but we're clearly in no shape to steamroll over them quite yet.

Yeah, and knowing that they've likely been here for longer, it'll be a long time before we're in any shape to start a war with them.

Yeah, and knowing that they've likely been here for longer, it'll be a long time before we're in any shape to start a war with them.

Maybe not. Reviewing previous options, for 500Hs and 2 years, we can upgrade our 200 Karlar (unarmored militia people) into Lidsmenn (armored semi-professional soldiers). That's going to increase the hell out of our maintaince expenses  (70 units cost us 220 in maintaince, presuming something like 3Hs per person, that's 600 more Hs a turn in expenses) so we're going to want to wait until at least 2 turns from now before considering it, so we can grab more economic things this upcoming turn so we can afford it. Presuming we wait until 2 turns from now to initiate it, it'll be 4 years until we have our army and need to pay those expenses. Hopefully we'll be able to get even more economics running in the meantime.

I'm thinking of a progress of
Upcoming: 770Hs budget: Logging, Pelts, +1 (Probably Mead and Honey as we got the Stewardship bonus), and expanded trading
Year after: Minimun budget 580+(likely to be something between 1080 and 1280 due to foreign trade): Training the Leidangar, +1 (whatever we can afford that we didn't grab last turn), expanded trading
2 Years after: budget ??: Palisades, whatever's left from the last turn, more trading
3 Years after: budget ??: New Lidsmenn are in, ??

The leidangr consists of our conscripts. Something that dents their number in a large amount and we'd probably be left reeling from that economically. And likely the Leidangr only costs money when it's raised; that money we're paying is just for our professional warriors.

We shouldn't be raising the leidangr for raids though, not at this stage. We have too few people as it is.
