In brighter (and liberal news) : California proposes ambitious new climate goals. Go California! We rebels! We rebels!, Yeah! lol

California might be about to lose its ability to set its own CAFE standards.  That would...rather hurt their ability to meet their climate targets in any fashion.

I think there might be ways around that. If you can't directly disincentivize a specific behavior there are always workarounds you could use.

Forget "Make America Great Again" ... "Make America Same Again" would be sufficiently relieving for most people right now.

I think you mean 'Sane', not 'Same'.

True. It is simply not worth the bother, particularly since a brand so big and open as 'liberal' is already very difficult to keep in some hands and out of others. That ought to be a very early instruction for lower level managers and functionaries; if someone interested in your cause describes themselves as a 'street warrior', run a mile.

Not sure what Reelya meant by 'Same' in that context then... edit: You meant the status-quo maybe? Though Trump is upending the status quo and replacing it with his own status quo.

I meant most people would settle for things being like they were before, with the good and the bad, since 2016 has created enormous uncertainty.

BTW auto companies involved have actually been on board with fuel efficiency standards in the last decade or so, after vehemently fighting standards for three decades. Because electric cars. In other words if all gasoline cars are equally inefficient, then nobody has a leg up, you gotta buy from someone, so they want to keep the cost of the car down. In that scenario, car companies would collude to maintain a de facto standard that's as cheap for them to produce as possible.

But now there's a viable competitor arising that isn't tied to gasoline efficiency, so if car and oil companies get Trump to rescind fuel efficiency then they're driving sales to the new competitor who are their biggest threat as an industry. Sure, there might lack charging stations right now, but the fact is electric outlets are a lot simpler to roll out en masse than gas stations. There might come a point where when creating a new suburb, it's a lot simpler for everyone if they get electric cars.

America voted for about as far away from same as possible. Of course, we also voted as far away from sane as possible too. This includes the options of Stein and Johnson, somehow. Great time to be alive, everyone.

The only thing certain is we will not have had a president like Trump before and many may hope that we never have one like him again.

He could be a great president and improve the world greatly, or he could be so terrible that America returns to a reasonable level of power for the Presidency. Both of those options could be pretty good.

I'm hoping it's the former, personally, but I don't begrudge anyone hoping for the latter.

We may also see the Republicans use their majority to change the rules regarding the filibuster, which is a pretty good outcome in my book. People will yell at them for pulling the ladder up behind themselves, but if the Democrats did it instead the accusation'd stick just as hard.

You mean changing it so that they need 60 votes in the Senate for confirming nominations and other stuff instead of a simple majority? Pfft, fat chance of that happening.

They've also threatened to use the 'nuclear option' for the SCOTUS nominee. Honestly, the 60 vote threshold really shouldn't be removeable because, as much as the Republicans abused it, it's an important check and balance between the two parties.
