I'm sitting here thinking "Could there have been a "better" match for an election featuring the first woman president ever than Trump?"

More cynically, it's been increasingly clear even to the Republican party since at least the first presidential debate that Trump has precisely zero chance of winning the race, and if that's not gonna happen then why would they ever hang around the toxic landfill fire that is Don's campaign?

Honor? After all, they made him swear he would support whoever won the nomination; it would be pretty hypocritical of them to not support him after he won.

This was one of the increasingly poor decisions of the modern GOP.

I guess I respect you for not going Full Hitler.

What I mean though is, what better way to get voters who at ambivalent at best about a female presidency on board than parading around an orange, bloated, shrieking misogynist who makes you feel ashamed to be share his gender?

This latest scandal is the perfect opportunity to jump ship and try to make themselves look better in the process.

This is how I interpret it as well.  Political maneuvering, not genuine outrage.  I'm pretty sure there would be fiercer efforts to help Trump through this if he were a stronger candidate in general.  Otherwise, this would be the first time I've ever seen the GOP respond in anything like a sensible manner to sexual assault with sincerity.  Normally, this is the party of "Rape pregnancies are a gift from god" and "Rape isn't possible because a woman's body has ways of shutting that down."

Wait. I am confused. You are presenting it as an option. Do you imply that there was a slightest possibility that American socialists would not:
1) Eventually drag out a would-be "First Woman President".
2) Paint the opponent of (1) as "an orange, bloated, shrieking misogynist", even if he was literally a green fish.
3) Do so after they themselves both have painted themselves in various unnatural shades of red and shrieked down Sarah Palin (then pretended she did never exist).

Another woman?

Not what you meant, but (not knowing if there are any obvious and suitably qualified candidates in the GOP ranks) wouldn't it have been a coup to have gotten a female Republican Presidential Candidate vs (Clinton|Sanders*) vs Stein. Oh boy(/girl), that would have been a potentially hueg tactical win. Back to policies, indeed, fewer distractions.  Assuming that 'Ms GOP' wasn't actually a terrible candidate. But that's GOP's problem, if they have no non-terrible female candidates in line with their collective party vision.

(Trans-female even better?)

ETA: I'd forgotten about Palin. But she probably doesn't qualify under my other criteria. Although I did make myself wonder if Trump could get himself Reassignment Surgery before November...  ;)

No party that manipulates voting results via "gerrymandering"
Now, both parties take part in gerrymandering, but the Republicans far and away won the national championship while the Democrats were busy focusing on a couple of regional games.

Usually there is a bit more back and forth as each party tries to do their thing, but there was a motivated strategy specifically to capitalize on the census year+upcoming elections and pushing to get in place people who could get all the necessary changes enacted to wind up with the current situation where democrats got more votes overall but didn't manage to gain control because the areas they got those votes in were all finagled into being a much smaller number of seats than, well, any non-tortured districting scheme would have resulted in.

ftfy

It's hard to fine non-terrible candidates in line with the party's values, when the party's values are terrible.

1. What?
2. What?
3. What? Ok there's something substantive there. No one shouted down Palin due to her gender. They shouted her down because she was a fucking moron, and she proved it by her commitment to stay in politics by instead of going to Fox News to get fat and rich.

Now see if Donald Trump was a legitimate candidate, the party has ways of shutting that thing down.

Yeah, Trump has Putin directly on call, if anything, he can always rely on Russian Spetznaz to butcher its way through any Republican establishment opposition that dares to stand in his way.

(I wouldn't be surprised if that would actually happen)
