As Imic was walking the grounds of the fortress while simultaneously cursing the royalty, he noticed a dwarf making his way through the undergrowth. Was he a migrant?
Ho! Have you come to live in our fine fort, friend.
No. I have come here to say that you need better work, friend. Get some metal armor. And that shield is rubbish.
Imic clutched at his shield defensively.
Anyway, could I see your master?
Ye- wait, why?
I have a letter to give to him.
Oh no...
Sent, *he opened the letter* from Bomrek, lord of the north.
Oh, no...

Imic has good taste, the shield is a masterwork.

Excerpt from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

1 Hematite 78

I’ve ordered Catten to build and use a second clothiers workshop.  We need the extra production since our own clothes are starting to show signs of wear.  And I want to wear something new!
______________________________________________________________________________

 2 Hematite 78

Mooney was jolted out of his contemplation of a particularly lovely kenaf shrub by a sudden movement.

Another of those dratted kobolds!

Raising his crossbow, he fired a bolt at it.  But, because the kobold had started running as soon as Mooney started to raise it, the bolt thunked harmlessly to the ground where the kobold had been standing.  It broke on impact.

Humph.  Useless wood.  When will Lotu get us some real bolts?  I think I need to remind him.
______________________________________________________________________________

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

14 Hematite 78

I’ve ordered that the extra low-quality furniture and elvish cages be moved to the depot.

19 Hematite 78

The traders did uphold the bargain.  I bought all 205 units of preserved fish that they had brought, and promptly forbade anyone from eating it.  We’ll be ready for Bomrek’s fish obsession.

(OOC: I actually ordered some from the dwarves, in case that would affect what the humans brought.)

I also got some silver bars, because Money’s been moaning about wooden bolts breaking in combat, and all of the thread and leather they brought.  Olon will be able to fully equip the Pale Roads with it, and the Pillars of Ink will get boots and helms, in addition to their armor.

We now have a llama for wool production, a turkey hen, though she’s useless for leather production without a gobbler (note: order one from the dwarves in the fall), and a water buffalo cow, so Mestthos is walking around with a wide smile on her face with the presence of a breeding pair.  I wish everyone were as easy to please.

Before trading:                                                  After trading:

22 Hematite 78

Olon reports that the armor quota is now complete.  That’s one less worry on my mind.  I sent him back to his leatherworks to start making armor, high boots and helms for the militia.  Imic’s squad, as the melee group, will have first choice.

2 Malachite 78

More and more puppies are growing up, and more are being born.  I’ve told Erib to slaughter any dogs NCommander doesn’t train.  The leather will come in handy, and the meat provides variety.

8 Malachite 78

Lorbam is complaining that it is impossible to tell how many trousers and socks we have to trade, given that so many lying scattered around are still owned.  I’m going to be spending the next week scouring the place from top to bottom, and confiscating every abandoned piece of clothing I find.

17 Malachite 78

Production on the crafts continues, more slowly than I’d like.  I’ve told Olon to join us in the crafters’ workshops once he finishes the armor orders.

24 Malachite 78

I’ve finally finished my clothes-scouring, and we have enough clothing to fulfill both of those quota requirements.

Geez…the mess.

On the plus side, the common areas now look much neater.

28 Malachite 78

Only the crowns and bracelets remain, the rest of the quota is ready.  I’ve ordered all non-essential personnel, including Ral because we have over 2500 drinks, to focus on hauling wood to the stockpile near the crafters’ workshops.  Those of us crafting will be working day and night to finish in time to make up for the few who keep claiming crafts.

13 Galena 78

Imic grabbed Lotu by the elbow, pulling him down to the bottom of the Hole, glancing around frantically, not stopping until they were hidden behind one of the pumps.  Only then did he speak.

“Isn’t this a little extreme?  Everyone else is focusing on finishing quota, we could have met anywhere without notice.”

“We got problems.”  He handed Lotu an opened letter.

“You opened it?” Lotu exclaimed on seeing that it was addressed to him.

“Read it!”

Stepping out from concealment long enough to grab a nearby torch, he leaned back against the wall.  As he read, his eyebrows inched up.  “That @#$*&, @#@*#&$%*, of a @#*$&^#$ Bomrek!”

“Tha’s my reaction.”

Lotu breathed in sharply, thinking hard.  “How many others saw you get this?”

“None.  I’s out in th’forest, gettin’ wood from the furthes’ section.”

“Where is the messenger now?”

“Gettin’ a drink.  An’ like’s not ‘e’ll report back to the feckin’ SOB tha' we have good drinks, an’ we’ll ‘ave to lose them too!”

Lotu nodded, consideringly.  Then, very deliberately, he held the sheet of paper above the torch’s flame.  A thin stream of smoke curled upward.  Lotu waited until the flame had almost reached his fingers, then dropped the missive to the sandy floor, where the final fragments quickly turned to ash.

He met and held Imic’s eyes.  “It would be unfortunate, if our visitor failed to return to Swordgangs.”  He spoke conversationally.  “Wouldn’t you agree?”

Imic folded his arms across his chest, and cocked his head.  “Tha’t would.”

“I think it would be a good idea for you to escort him on the first part of his journey back.  Personally.  And you alone, as we can’t spare anyone else.”

Imic grinned, showing his teeth.  “Gladly.”

“And, Imic?”

Imic turned back.

“These wilds are a dangerous place, I’m pretty sure I saw a tiger roaming around the other day.  I’d like you to keep an eye out for any…stranger alone who might…need some help.”

Imic’s expression could only be described as feral.

Lotu added, almost as an afterthought.  “We never had this conversation.”

“Why, Lotu, I haven’t seen you down here much.  Are you finally getting down to the aquifer?”  Imic asked innocently, as he walked purposely toward the central ramps.

And there goes a dwarf on a mission.  But all I’ve done is buy us some time.  Eventually Bomrek will realize…  And he’ll tell the king…  And while King Dodok is incompetent, one of his advisors will decide to send the army here.

Please, Armok.  Please give us time.

______________________________________________________________________________

28 Galena 78

Production progresses.

And I’m about to tear my hair out with all of the bracelets that “magically” find an owner on the way to the stockpile.  I’m now having to lock each one up myself, as they get finished, or we’ll never make quota.

OOC: Anyone know if it's possible to use DFHack's "cleanowned" script to confiscate only crafts?  At this rate of claiming I'm going to be swimming in owned bracelets with nothing practical to show for it.

Hold on.

Bracelet list a page long...Multiple places of residence...Mysterious deaths of people left alone...Thousands of booze sitting undisturbed in barrels....Individual bedrooms which are situated out of the way from the usual plant and wood work...

To the less discerning eyes, it appears as if your entire fortress is vampires.

I guess there is a reason why outpost liasons like to stand over the beds of expedition leader, but oh dear. Drowning everyone would just kill normal dwarves while leaving vampires unharmed - definitely not what a ruler of the realm would want. In such a situation, what is a king who is losing the war to do?

Why, pit the vampires against the goblins!

3 Limestone 78

Chastulmer watched the entrance of the dwarven settlement from beneath his conveniently-placed bush.  He had been there for days already, his companions just as carefully hidden, but there was as yet no break in the constant flow of dwarves entering and leaving.

Many wood shinies.  Want shinies.

But the only way in was that heavily-traveled entrance, and not even a master thief could pass undetected.  Frustrated, he signaled to his companions and they trudged away, yet again empty-handed.
______________________________________________________________________________

Excerpt from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

 12 Limestone 78

Imic has sighted the caravan, slowly advancing upon this place.  It is time for our yearly accounting, and I’ve ordered the quota delivered.
______________________________________________________________________________

14 Limestone 78

Echoworked followed to Lotu to his “office” at one end of the dining table.

“Bomrek’s been replaced?”  Lotu was relieved.  Hopefully this Iden would be more reasonable.

But Echoworked promptly dashed his hopes.  “No.  Bomrek leads the Brave Gates.  The Bronze Gate controls…”

Lotu tuned him out.  Yet something else I don’t care about.

Lotu came back to the conversation with a jerk, and pulled out the list he had made.

“We need more leather, cloth and thread.  We also need weapon-grade metals, preferably steel, but iron will do, and turkeys.  Lots of turkeys.”

That should make the soldiers happier.  At least, it will when it arrives next fall.  And producing our own leather will make us that much more independent.

Echoworked made some notes.  “All right, this is what Bomrek wants.”

Lotu felt his stomach sink below his boots.  Rock mugs.  How am I going to manage rock mugs?  I haven’t had any time to work on the aquifer!

Echoworked added, “Also, 47 dwarves now call Swordgangs home.”

Two additional dwarves.  Like that makes anything any better.

---

Several hours later, Lotu looked down at his final calculations.

We can manage the rest but…rock mugs.  What are we going to do?

13 Sandstone 78

Lotu entered the depot, only for his way to be blocked by Dastot, the head merchant.

“Yer missin’ 18 pieces o’armor.”

“What?  We made it all.”

Just then, belabored panting caused the two dwarves to turn around to see Sodel carrying a bin.  The bin was so heavy that he was almost collapsing with every step.

“Here.  Here’s th’armor.”  And he dropped the bin just inside the depot, collapsing to the ground next to it.

Dastot rummaged through the bin, and finally admitted, “Tha’s the last of’t.”

Lotu frowned.  That was said so grudgingly…is he a friend of Bomrek’s?

Pushing the thought aside for future consideration, he focused on trading.

He automatically selected all of the thread, then paused a moment.

I don’t know how long it takes to make paper, so maybe I should grab all nine of those sheets.

He added them to the pile, as well as the weapon-grade metal.  That will give us a start, at least, though now I have to figure out who to take charge of smithing.

Glancing at the pile of quota items, he started pulling a selection of the cheapest, undyed cloth and leather, until the total pile was equal in value.  Longingly, he looked at the rest of the traders’ items, but he had already pulled everything they could afford.

And I’m not giving up anything we’ve made for ourselves.  Uh-uh.

Before trading:                                               After trading:

(OOC: I think the reason it didn’t change much is because of all the leather I bought the previous year that ended up being used to fill the quota.  It counterbalanced what I bought, especially since pre-ordered items are more expensive.)

18 Sandstone 78

The residents of Finderboards watched the wagons jerk into motion, rolling slowly out of the stockade toward Swordgangs.

The feeling was one of celebration, as the dwarves watched the first fully-filled quota leave.

Lotu was quiet, still struggling to find a solution to the impossible demand that had landed in his lap.

Let them have their moment.  I’ll be destroying it soon enough.

19 Sandstone 78

Assembled in the common area for the Quota Meeting, the dwarves were still celebrating, raising their cups high, slapping each other’s backs, and generally cheerful.

“Settle down.”  Lotu spoke loudly.  “We have work to discuss.”

The dwarves found their places, some claiming chairs, some on the floor, a few leaning against the walls.  Lotu passed out the work list.

“Mugs!”  The shocked cry rose from several throats.

Lotu nodded.  “Obviously, we won’t be able to fill that one exactly.  Instead, we’re going to make more cups.  They want drinking tools, we’ll give it to ‘em.  But they have to take what we can make.”

“But –“

“I’ll send letters explaining things to both Bomrek and the king.  If King Dodok really wants us to fill rock-based ordered, he’s either going to have to send more workers here, or start shipping rock from the Mountainhomes.  And the traders won’t want to do that.”

---

Excerpt from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

It took some persuading, but they finally agreed that this is our only option.  We eventually agreed that Mestthos, Lorbam and Dr. Urist would be responsible for paper-making, even though none of them know how to do it.  I’m sure Dr. Urist can figure it out, and I’ve promised her she can have any extra paper they make.  Airith volunteered to make a millstone out of one of the few boulders I’ve been hoarding and Dr. Urist can then hook it and the screw press up to the screwpumps, since we already have their power trains set up.

Logem, NCommander, Ral and I will focus on most of the crafts, while Catten makes crossbows and Mebzuth makes the windows.  I’ve also asked Mebzuth to make some glass trade goods to use with the elves in the spring, in case they bring anything interesting.

Spriggans was overjoyed at returning to the wood furnace, since Mebzuth needs lots of charcoal.

Lyra and Uvash will split their time between making splints and making more bins.  We never seem to have enough of the latter.

Erib, Minkot, and Edzul will continue to grow plants, this time destined for milling rather than threshing.

Sodel and Olon will use the cloth and leather I bought to make us some replacement clothing.  Finally something just for us.

The six militia will be hauling in wood, and keeping an eye out for…kobolds.  We’re in such an out-of-the-way place, literally just a hole in the ground, that I don’t expect any other visitors.
______________________________________________________________________________

Excerpt from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

3 Timber 78

I tracked down Dr. Urist today, to find out why she still hadn’t built the millstone and the screw press.  It turns out she was in her library, testing poisons.

While I have no issues with her trying to find a way to remove the Bomrek problem, I told her that she wouldn’t have any peace and quiet until that machinery was built.

I swear that dwarf actually flounced away.

18 Timber 78

They kids are overjoyed with the toys we’ve been making.  Once we’re done with quota, I’ll get some extras made for them.

(OOC: The kid with “Store Item in Bin” is actually putting a toy axe away.  I didn’t know they did that.  I thought they just left them lying around for someone else to trip over.)

24 Timber 78

The puppies keep following their mothers.  I’ve gotten tired of seeing a dwarf stop whatever it’s doing to go after a puppy and bring it back to the pasture.

I’ve ordered them all caged.  Their whimpering is pitiful, but we need to work.

28 Timber 78

Production is well in hand.

Apparently Catten had already made a whole bunch of crossbows earlier, before I reassigned her for the last quota.  That’s going to help.

OOC: I've been too busy to play this week, but finally got the last of the pictures uploaded for fall.  I'll get back to playing this weekend.

I doubt any friend of Bomrek would want to prevent him from getting stuff. No, if anything Sodel might be opposite...I wonder if Lotu will start engaging in random slaughter, paranoid against others?

Toys, splints, and crowns should be easy. Windows will be moderately difficult ( 3 jobs per window). Paper...Growing, mashing and pressing, 3 jobs per paper. I wonder how long that will take?

Rock mugs should be easy too...provided aquifer is penetrated. Floored over entrance, so no keas, and chained dogs to ensure no kobolds....

Perhaps 6 dwarves on papermaking and windowmaking, so 19 remaining...9 after subtracting the kids.....

Is the aquifer truly too fat to pierce in a year with 9 dwarves? Terrifying, I haven't encountered one fatter than 3 layers yet myself.

could you make clay mugs?

ill check

edit:

Dr Urist:

Hmmm.... Glass is similar to rocks. What if we make glass goblets in the shape of mugs? Obsidian is a rock. It is also glass, so it should work, right?

Make green glass goblets. If obsidian is glass and a rock, why not make green glass a rock? Ha!

Already looked at that.  If it's possible, I don't see how to do it, all I see is "make clay crafts", which AFAIK don't make goblets/mugs.  The green glass...hadn't thought of that justification.

Humm... Why don't you pierce that aquifer yet ?

Because low-level dwarves work so slowly, I've only gotten about halfway through the first layer (and according to reveal, it's 6 layers deep).  Now that I'm starting to get high-level craftsdwarves, Lotu & Airith will probably get a chance to actually work on it during this next year.

OOC:  17x17 will be the size after everything is finished and looks nice.  The working shaft to get down is rather smaller than that.

Early Winter 78, Theaterknowledge

The cloaked and hooded figure entered the little-used room in which Dastot waited.

“And?”

“Finderboards met the entire quota this fall.”

The newcomer hissed.  “What?”

Dastot shrugged.  There really was nothing else to say.

The other paced back and forth several times, before turning back to Dastot with a swirl of the cape around the feet.

“This next quota, is it possible?”

Dastot slowly shook his head, a smug little smirk playing around his lips.  “Bomrek’s asked for rock mugs.”

The other made an impatient gesture.  “Any settlement of seven can make rock mugs!”

Dastot kept shaking his head.  “Finderboards has an aquifer.  A deep one, apparently, from the geology.  They haven’t even finished getting through the soil layer.  They won’t be able to get enough rock before we return in the fall.  This quota will once again be incomplete.”

“Indeed.”  Satisfaction oozed from the word.  “Very well.  Dismisssed.”

Dastot lost no time checking that the corridor was empty, before slipping away, relieved.  That one…gives me the creepiest feeling.
______________________________________________________________________________

1 Moonstone 78

“Mebzuth!”  Dr. Urist entered the glassworks.

“One moment.”  Mebzuth spoke absently, focused on the glass he was carefully melting.  Several minutes later, he finally removed the sheet of glass and slid it into the nearby tub of water to cool.

Only then did he glance up to register Dr. Urist’s impatient shifting from foot to foot.  “What?”

“I’ve found a solution to the rock mug problem.  But, before I tell Lotu, I wanted to make sure you could make 141 glass goblets, in addition to the 188 windows.”

“Glass goblets?  For rock?”

“Yes!  Obsidian is rock, right?  Well, it’s also a kind of glass!  So, if obsidian is actually glass, then glass is a kind of rock.  See?”

“Seems to me you’re reaching,”

“Maybe, but it’s closer to rock than wood.  Can you manage?”

Mebzuth looked around thoughtfully.  He had already completed nineteen windows, and some corkscrews to trade with the elves.

Let’s see.  One bag of sand per window, that’s 169 jobs.  I can probably make three goblets per sand bag, that’s another…forty-seven jobs.  So a total of 216 jobs.  I have six months, so I need to do thirty-six jobs a month.  And I still need to make those corkscrews Lotu wants on hand to trade to the elves.

“It’ll be tight.”  He said.  “I can do it, if I get an extra pair of hands and other people to collect the sand.  And Spriggans will probably need an assistant for the charcoal.”

Dr. Urist nodded.  “All right.  That’s what I’ll tell him.”

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

2 Moonstone 78

It wouldn’t be a new season without another kobold showing up.  They never get close, so we’ve learned to ignore them.

I’ve asked Airith to build an extra glassworks and another wood furnace, in accordance with Dr. Urist’s suggestion.  If we really can make enough glass, then that’s one less woodcrafter that we need, and I can turn my attention to other priorities.

Now to figure out who to juggle once Airith has finished those buildings.
______________________________________________________________________________

5 Moonstone 78

“Ah, Lotu.”

Lotu was surprised to see the liaison still around, and said as much.

“Oh, I wanted to spend some quality time with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  At any rate, I was packing up to head back to Theaterknowledge, and realized I never gave you this.”  Echoworked held out a letter, sealed with the royal insignia.

Uh-oh.

Automatically wishing Echoworked a good journey, Lotu headed for the pumps on the sublevel.  He needed privacy to deal with what he was sure was bad news.

Sliding his thumbnail beneath the wax, he opened the letter.

Attention: Lotu Sizzlediron

It has come to my attention that Finderboards has failed in its duty to fill a second supply shipment.  Not only that, but over 40% of the required goods were lacking. This caused a severe loss of focus and distraction which resulted in the production of substandard spears.  Should this happen again, I will have no option but to replace you as the expedition leader of Finderboards in favor of a more capable administrator.  You have been warned.

Signed: His Majesty by the Grace of Armok, King Dodok Charmedmirror, Cheesemaker

Lotu leaned his head back against the sand wall.  At least this year’s quota was complete.
______________________________________________________________________________

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

17 Moonstone 78

The second wood furnace is finished, and Edzul has been reassigned from the fields to charcoal duty, under Spriggans’s supervision.  Mebzuth will soon have more charcoal than he can use.

26 Moonstone 78

The second glassworks is done.

Since everyone already has a job, I’ve ordered that it only be used to collect sand.  Hopefully that will free up enough time for Mebzuth to complete the goblets and windows.

Thank goodness Sodel is making more bags than we can use, though our cloth reserves are dropping.  At least the paper production seems to be working well.

Lorbam and Lotu sat in Lorbam’s office, going over Finderboards’ monthly status.

“One last thing.”  Lorbam said, checking his list.  “We have all the paper we need to fulfill quota.”

“Already?”  Lotu was amazed, having expected the paper to take longer.

“Hmm-mmm.”

“That means Zutthan and Mestthos can be assigned to other things!”  Like glassmaking!

Checking that they had finished discussing all the items on Lorbam’s list, Lotu headed off to inform them of their new assignments.

“I’m outta’ sand!”  Mebzuth called down to Lotu’s current digging spot.

“What?”  Lotu pulled himself up to sit on the top of the ramp.  “There’s sand all around, how can you be out?”  As he spoke he waved at the yellow sand surrounding them.

“No bags t’collect it.”

“I thought Sodel had made plenty.”

“He’s been makin’ clothes, not bags.  And nice ‘uns, too.”  Sodel fingered the sleeve of his new dress, which Lotu had to admit was very well-made, indeed.

With a sigh, he got to his feet and headed off to deal with the latest crisis.

Arriving at the clothiers’, he found Sodel putting the finishing touches on a pair of mittens.  “What’s up with the bag situation?”

“No cloth.  All of the plant fiber is going to paper-making, and several others were complaining about wearing tattered rags that barely even fit the description of ‘clothing’.  I decided to do something about it, and used up all of the traded cloth.”

Lotu took a deep breath, and let it out slowly through his nose.  “And you couldn’t tell Zutthan that you needed him to make some thread?”

You put him on glassmaking duty and forbade him from threshing.”  Sodel pointed out acidly.

“Fine.  He’ll go back to the farmer’s workshop.  Just make more bags.”

Lotu walked out, oblivious to the glare Sodel shot at his back.

Glassmaking continues, more slowly than I’d like, since Mestthos and Mebzuth have to keep interrupting their work to wait for others to collect more sand.  As a result, I’ve ordered a third glassworks built.  Mestthos and Mebzuth will each have their own, and the third will be used exclusively for sand collection.

The final walls for the aquifer attack are in place.

All that remains is to remove the wall into the pumping tower, so the water has someplace to go.  Once that’s done, I’ll get some volunteers to man the extra pump while I dig out enough of the deepest soil level to actually work from when tackling the stone aquifer.

Progress may be slow, but it is happening.  And it’s happening without anyone beyond these walls being aware.

Winter is at its end, and we are doing well.

I’ve ordered Mebzuth to stop making any glass items other than those required for the quota, as we have enough corkscrews and used silk clothing to trade for anything we want from the elves.

I'm still habing a hard time visualing how you'll go through the aquifer.
Is that some kind of double-slit method ?

When you actually breach it. Please make lots of screenshots for lazy dwarves like me to understand :-*

With all the wood you're using (coal, splints, toys, ...), do you still have enough ? Are trees growing at a good pace that allows wood to be virtually infinite ?
I've never made a entirely wood centered fort yet. I Probably should :P
