Interesting. Not a direction I expected plot to take, but it is a natural one.

The descriptions of running out of clothes...Are you using some kind of manager orders to make new cloth when there's worn clothing?

100 paper in what, 4 months or so? How many did you have working on that again?

(So fast, compared to the pearlash)

Looking at your pierce plans, it might be useful to remember that you can dig upstairs from downstairs above, though these upstairs will block cave-ins.

And yeah, like Spriggans I'm having trouble imagining what's 9 pumps needed for - never seen a pierce strategy that used more than 2 per level.

Btw, Spriggans, I think Dame would have gotten over thousand logs (maybe near two thousand? Don't remember how forested the shrubland was) clearcutting the map back in 74, and since currently it is 78 and trees take at most 3 years to grow, he's probably had another harvest mature by now.

Imic and the postman were walking through the jungle. Once he had taken a complete scan of everything that the fortress had, the postman had asked to leave. Imic, of course, had volunteered to "escort" him.
'We'll have you back in no time, sir.'
'I'd better be back soon, the king will be wanting my report.
too bad he won't get said report. Imic's own thoughts shocked him. But, it was rime that he did it. He drew his weap-
A herd of deer jumped out from the bushes, chased by a lion, who bumped into the postman, before they were both flattened under a falling tree. A herd of birds proceeded to poo all over said tree.
Imic, on the other hand, stood there, speechless. As he was about to walk back to the fort, he spotted a list in the hand of the postman. He picked up the list, which had a list of things that the fortress had, along with some comments for Bomrek, and some others marked 'to be forwarded to the king'
Imic walked away, clutching the list in his hampnd. Behind him, the grave of the postman was struck by lighning.

I'm still habing a hard time visualing how you'll go through the aquifer.
Is that some kind of double-slit method ?
That's where it started, then it evolved into my current method, which has a large enough aquifer shaft by the end of digging to actually get a mine cart system that goes from the surface fort all the way down to magma (ultimately) with various offshoots where practical.  And it doesn't require piercing the aquifer in more than one place.

When you actually breach it. Please make lots of screenshots for lazy dwarves like me to understand :-*
That is part of the plan.   But working with only 1.5 dwarves makes it slow (I may have to break my small fort rule eventually...as I usually focus on the aquifer first and only have 4-5 dwarves to keep everyone else fed/protected).  This is basically a complete reversal of my normal aquifer-piercing process, which is making it more of a challenge (piercing the aquifer had gotten rather ho-hum).  But with the economy update getting closer, I want to see if it's really possible to fulfill quotas (or what fraction of them can be filled), given some of the more stringent constraints that players can impose (small population, presence of aquifer, etc.).

With all the wood you're using (coal, splints, toys, ...), do you still have enough ? Are trees growing at a good pace that allows wood to be virtually infinite?

I actually haven't managed to clearcut the map yet.  So yes, wood is essentially infinite, which is why I keep making things out of it.

I hadn't, but then I'm not completely comfortable with the conditional orders yet.  I'm still figuring out how quickly specific jobs take, given that that's such an integral part of this challenge and not one that I'd paid much (if any) attention to in the past.   The paper was a case in point.

I had 2, one milling the paper slurry, one pressing the slurry into paper (not counting the 3 planters).  Apparently one plant slurry will make ~3 sheets of paper (I just checked by running one "press pig tail slurry" job, which gave me another three sheets).  It's not hard-and-fast though, as I've now made 95 sheets of paper, which isn't divisible by three, so some of the slurries made less or more (and I'll have to check much more closely the next time I need to make paper to see which is most efficient, unless that number is governed by the dwarf's skill, which can't be excluded yet).  So that went much faster than I had anticipated.

Ok, I've finished catching up on the thread.

I've been busy. All of those screws that I make intended for the aquifer device, and my fiancee keeps trading them, though who can blame him. The King is an ass, and that Bomrek... well lets just say I hope that the Doc's study into toxicology proves fruitful.

That one Kobold though, what's his name... ah Tayldis I think it was, he's been a recurring thing here. He's a little banged up, I must say. He has some serious injuries that only appear on the more experienced of his kind, better watch out for him.

On another note, my recent inquiries to the other outposts and fortresses have had mixed results. They all are of the opinion that the King is an incompetent ass who should be disposed, but a few are still loyal to the Crown, regardless of who wears it. I think I will bring my soon-to-be Hubby in the ring soon, because even if I am successful, I don't want that responsibility.

If the plan works, the King will come here and will come down with a "sickness" and will leave this mortal coil. And then my Allies in the other forts will launch a campaign against the loyalists, and when all is calm and the smoke clears, I will humbly present my Hubby the Crown and I will become Queen.

Not bad huh, still MANY loose ends though, the Doc's work in Toxicology is still rudimentary at best, and my allies are too few. Even here, I'm just a shadow behind Lotu (though I am NOT complaining, the spotlight always did scare me). I think I can count Imic among my potential allies though, I may formally invite him to join...

Anywho, I need to get back to work, those pumps ain't gonna finish themselves.

Wanting to kill someone and all their offspring...For being on the losing end of a war that doesn't affect you, for being bad at spearthrowing, for greed? This is truly horrifying.

I've never seen dwarves, goblins or elves go to war with each other in world gen....No, this behaviour is all too human.

Ah, one of the first orders I take (with dfhack) is cutting down all the non-fruit trees with getplants, or at least all the willows (lighter).

Enough room for both workshops and minecart tracks in a single pierce...Grand!

Looking through our supplies, I’ve ordered all of our tattered silk clothes moved to the depot, in addition to the extra green glass corkscrews and a spare glass pipe that was lying in the stockpile.

The elves brought more useless junk, but I bought all of their brewable fruit, at it makes some fairly decent drinks.  The elves did bring a selection of animals, so we now are the proud owners of: a giant porcupine, a black bear, a sloth, a gray langur, and a giant coati.  I’ve also acquired a giant dingo and a tiger to be war-trained, assuming NCommander can manage it, and a giant sparrow for the eggs. I’ll once more be able to enjoy my poached egg in the morning, at least occasionally.  Ravens are supposedly intelligent, according to the ancient legends, so we now have one of those roaming the place, and I absolutely refused the kea.

But that does beg an important consideration.  Are the elves in league with the keas?  They always have at least one in their shipments.

We’ll have to keep a close eye on them.

On the plus side, as we replace our clothes and use up supplies, we’re able to import more and more, despite the king’s import restriction.

Lotu stopped by the glassworks on his way back to the crafters’ workshops.  “Mebzuth?”  He glanced around the seemingly-empty building.  “You here?”

Mebzuth stepped around the chimney, hanging the poker on its dedicated hook.  “Yeah?”

“Don’t worry about making anything other than the windows and goblets for the rest of spring and summer.  I got everything potentially useful that the elves brought, so we can make do with the wooden stuff for the humans.”

“Hmpph.”  Mebzuth snorted, but nodded.  Maybe now I’ll actually be able to finish that quota.  With Mestthos’s help.  “ ‘N Mestthos?”

“She’s not in her glassworks, so I’m going to try to track her down.  If you see her first, though, can you pass on the message?”

Mebzuth grunted, already starting to process the bag of sand that was sitting next to the work-bench.

Taking that as a yes, Lotu headed for the common area, hoping to find Mestthos enjoying a break.

NCommander has managed to train the tiger, so we now have a war tiger roaming around.  Unfortunately, she claims that dingoes can’t be trained, even though they look like dogs.  Something to do with them being marsupials, is her best guess.  Pity.

28 Slate 79

A single kea made its way almost all the way to the depot.



I knew pasturing the extra war animals there would be worth the constant aggravation of them trying to follow NCommander every time they saw her.  The other dwarves have certainly stopped complaining about the extra work.

The body was too mangled to use for anything, so the pieces have been dumped, out of the way.  At least, the bits the animals didn’t eat.

Of course, now there’s blood everywhere.



For once, I welcome the rain that started up again a little while ago.  It will wash that gore away without our having to lift a finger.

02 Felsite 79

That first kea was clearly just an advance scout.  The entire flock is back, terrorizing honest, hard-working dwarves who never did them a single disservice.

Well, we’re prepared to deal with them now.



Our archers are starting to have very good aim.

Lotu opened his eyes, feeling at peace after praying to the Book of Insight.  As he made to leave the temple area, he glance over to the library.

Huh, that’s odd.  I don’t think I’ve seen Dr. Urist scribbling quite that ferociously before.  Has she found a solution to the Bomrek problem?



19 Felsite 79

Dr. Urist came charging out of the library waving a quire.  A quire covered in scribbles, Imic noted.

“I’ve done it!”  Pride emanated almost tangibly from her body.

“Let’s see it.”  Airith held her hand out.

Dr. Urist passed it over.



That’s it?  Imic thought.  Nothin’ remotely useful. 

Disgusted, he hefted his axe and headed out to cut some more trees, while keeping an eye on the environs for anything out of place.

Of course. By filling the windmill holes with water, you prevent keas from entering through them.

Hahaha, I certainly didn't expect that! Though how good are the archers, now?

Hm, a porcupine...could be annoying with dumping leftovers, as the needles are unusuable. Best you might be able to do is stick them into a minecart and trade that away.

And, well. A complete roof, now. So many years. 

Splints, windows, crowns, toys...Surprised that you elected to do glass mugs first, however.

As long as this thread doesn't stop, I'll be happy :)

I wonder how the story will go :
- when (if) the King astablishs to Atolasob
- when mighty beasts come to attack the fort (exept keas, there were no real threats to the fort yet, right ?)
- when you'll breach that fat aquifer
- when Tayldis will be captured and questionned
- many other things !

Just keep an update from time to time and it'll be ok :P

Apparently Dr. Urist is back to thinking about possible poisons. 



I’ll have to keep an eye and ear out for things that could help her.  Maybe some nice vials, once Mebzuth has finished the windows?  I wonder if she would prefer green or clear glass…

Their arrival has made me realize something.  No kobolds have come with the season change.  Where are they hiding?  And this had better not be a bad omen.

In any case, we will be able to get rid of all of the tattered cloth and leather clothing that is cluttering up the hallways and stockpiles.  I’ve ordered all of it moved to the depot.  And, just in case that isn’t enough, I’ve ordered some of the low quality empty barrels moved as well.  At least we have plenty of barrels, it’s the bins we keep falling short on.

The traders brought fish.  Lots of fish.



We’re not Bomrek.  We don’t want insane amounts of fish.  None of us even particularly like fish.  I hope not buying it won’t come back to haunt us.

They also brought a number of books, scrolls and quire copies, which I thought at first might be useful.  But they’re all travelogues of human hamlets and historical accounts of random apprenticeships.  Nothing remotely interesting.

I ended up trading for very little.  Just some more copper bars, which are better than no metal at all, a llama and an alpaca, since Zutthan seems to be able to handle both shearing, spinning and threshing, at least so far, and all of the thread the humans brought.  You can never have too much ready-made thread, even if the quality isn’t as good as something dwarven-made.

I also got a selection of seeds, maybe one of the farm plots can be used to grow real food, instead of for fiber production.  Or maybe we can make a new farm for that purpose.  I think we’re all starting to get a little tired of the same old, same old diet all the time.

The human caravan left.  I only noticed because the lead wagon almost ran over the war lion.  That was not a happy animal, and the incensed roar sped the caravan on its way.  Good riddance.

Erib has decided that we have plenty of dogs, and started to butcher some of the untrained ones.  NCommander put up quite a fuss.



They are now not talking to each other which, in such a small community, is making things rather tense.

Since we now have 22 war dogs, plus the war lion, war leopard and war tiger, not to mention another 29 puppies, with more appearing all the time and needing to be caged, I rather agree with Erib.

Besmar came to me today, requesting a new, temporary, assignment to one of the crafters’ workshops.  It seems that the need to do some carving is distracting him from the rest of his duties.

I agreed to his request, I admit with some alacrity.

I get to DIG!  Well, build the last retaining walls so I can dig without too much swimming.

Well, the retaining walls are coming along.  Slowly, but progress is being made.  Besmar, surprisingly enough, is proving to be quite a help, though I’ve insisted that he spend more time crafting.

Even with the pumps, though, the water is slowing things down.



But, soon Airith will be able to rotate the pumps and the real fun will begin.



28 Felsite 79

The end of summer is here, and the dwarven caravan will arrive before we know it, to snatch all of our hard work and impose a new set of Bomrek’s unreasonable demands.  But, each year, we get a little better.  A little more efficient.  A little more prepared.  And one day…  Yes, one day.

Meanwhile, only the windows remain. 



I also ordered an extra twelve toys made, so our children can enjoy the best fruits of our labors.  I’ve already gone through with NCommander and the other crafters, and we chose the 12 best toys produced this year to keep.  Bomrek will have to make do with the low-quality stuff.

Hey, can you import venom from caravans? With a bit of water to store the ammo in, you could do like Beastdiamond and copy the animal people of the underground for some of the deadliest weapons....Lets just hope the enemies aren't large and capable of wrestling away the crossbows to shoot back.

And if not arrows, perhaps a high velocity weapon.

Tayldis missing...It is probably nothing, given he has stolen nothing, but you could check legends mode.

Though Murdermachines did have the succession fort fall to kobold attack.

That seems unwise, given it has been requested twice. No idea if requests are random, but if they're not...

Well, lets hope you don't regret it come autumn. What did you request, this time?

About the war dogs: Beware of them pathing to their animal trainer or owner. The target constantly changes, and path has to be recalculated due overlaps with dogs, so it might cause some lag.

I think I see what you're doing with the aquifer better now. Huge! Well, once the walls are up digging out the inside should go quick...but then repeating a level lower.

Speaking of which, have you compared using doors instead of walls? One advantage I've found is that you can use the space to build stairs with tiny pierces (which otherwise don't have the room to stand adjacant to for building it).

Bomrek's role in this story is a little odd, to be honest. Hasn't he been failing king's demands and producing lower-quality stuff, too?

Perhaps exporting some masterwork wooden spears is just what the dude needs. Your carpenter is free, and you're not running out of logs.

And of course the report would distract the king from using glass rather than stone mugs. Not that the war isn't doing that well enough already, heh.
