Game of War [New Thread Created]
« on: May 18, 2016, 05:39:45 am »

Hi guys,

I had an idea for a war game that I wanted to share with you.

The game would be played on a map of a real world region but the whole world and setting would be made up so in the area of our-world France (this worlds France might actually be somewhere else than ours) you could have communist fighting the democratic North Korea (just an example). Each team of players would consist of 2 players and a leader. The game would be played in rounds, each round having two phases the first phase would take three real world days and no in-game time. In this phase each team would secretly discuss what moves they are making, what are their units doing etc. Are they waiting, moving, attacking? Than you would send a pm to me saying what your team is doing, after I get the PM from both teams we proceed to the second phase, the resolving phase.  If you send me actions that exceed a month than I won't do them all.

This phase is pretty self explainable, it will take an in-game month. I will move all your units on the map add any units that you bought etc. if the two teams meet (even if it was intentional) I will stop the resolving phase right there, tell you the in-game date and let you resolve the conflict. For resolving battles we will use something simple that involves a single D6, I already have an idea for it. After the battle is fought we continue resolving phase till the end of the month. If there were any hidden actions made (like secretly moving units to a location) I will post the map with only the revealed units here and keep track of all the units  myself. Players are supposed to keep a map of their hidden units themselves but if you lost track you can ask me to PM the map with your units. Anything other than battles and probably some other simple things will be resolved by the GM's common sense (like the movable distance).

Sorry for the wall of text, but the rules are actually pretty simple. Anybody interested? I will be looking for 6 players (3 for each team).

Had this idea myself for a while but never got it worked out in a way that wouldn't end in too much clutter.

i'd be interested, depending on the setting.

(coming from me this is a bit of hypocrisy...) Do you have some actual worked out rules for us or are you going by GM Fiat?

Sounds interesting, I'd also be curious on tech level/setting.

I would ask why fire can burn two men to death without getting hot enough to burn a book, but then I read "INEXTINGUISHABLE RUNNING KAMIKAZE RADIOACTIVE FLAMING ZOMBIE" and realized that logic, reason, and physics are all occupied with crying in the corner right now.

Speaking of lowest intelligence, that reminds me of the fact that it's probably your first time in prison. Don't worry, I can give you some tips, having spent some time in a few myself. I have most of the rules in my mind but I'm sure, as this was made in 24h, there will be some rule-changing.

Sounds interesting, I'd also be curious on tech level/setting.

I was actually thinking about letting the players decide about the setting.

Sorry leader will be decided by team members or if the team can't decide randomly. Also does this mean (if the above guys decide to play) that we just need one more player?

I'd agree with your maths there.

I'm also going to go ahead and suggest some settings:
Steampunk Imperial Age - The age of cannon and musket, wooden ships and iron men. With the inclusion of steam tanks, airships and other such rule-of-cool nonsense.
Ancient Civilisation - Age of the Roman Empire, with added Greeks, Egyptians, Gauls, etc. Also with the possibility of mythological creatures.
Age of Chivalry - Steel plated knights on gallant steeds. The most offensive weapon to a knight is the crossbow and gunpowder is nowhere in sight.

I was actually thinking about the Steampunk Imperial Age when thinking of a setting, Ancient Civilization is also very interesting but I leave the deciding to you.

I would personally prefer a more classical era. Greeks and Romans in classical age. Time of the Roman Republic and some time when the Greeks were unified (under Alexander?)

When creating this game I didn't want to use any events from real-world history cause that would kind of make us think of the ending and suggest what to do (maybe I'm wrong).

I also want to note everybody that, for now as I want to test out the more important parts of the system, we will not command single battles, just the war at all.

Vote for one setting (it's more about the technology available and who against who):
1900 Warfare/Trench warfare:
Classical Era:
Steampunk:
Ancient Civilization:
Age of Chivalry:

Notes: if we choose I world war than I will be looking for 7 players.
