The moment the Captain orders your arrest you raise you hands up into the air, and allow your self to be cuffed by the two bodyguards without any form of resistance as you are assured that the event had nothing to do with you thus guaranteeing your innocence. Once the cuffs are firmly on the two of you the Captain, and his escorts drag you through the soldiers flowing through the center of the camp towards a dull concrete building across the plaza from where you came in with a simple sign over it reading "Internal Affairs Office", and as you could easily guess the inside turns out to be a makeshift prison with several rooms that lock from the outside. Across from the doors are a few desks behind which several soldiers are dealing with quite a number of reports that are coming in along with one soldier who appears to be cursing repeatedly into a satellite phone as he attempts to get into contact with someone.

You look over to Carl for a moment, and find him looking at you with a massive grin spread on his face as he pipes up,

"Look on the bright side Chris, at least we're not human shaped lumps of charcoal. Now we get to sit in a cushy room with no work, and free food until they find out we're innocent along with potentially receiving a nice reparation check."

Upon hearing Carl's comment the Captain actually laughs as he opens the third cell door,

"Yeah, and when the higher ups give you that reparation check I'll get a nice big bonus for having to deal with your sarcastic bullshit."

Carl nods to the Captain before walking through the doorway whereupon the Captain slams the door shut, and throws the bolt into place before directing you personally to the fourth cell with a look of gratification on his face that makes you suspect he's had to deal with Carl quite a few times before this. You enter the cell as directed and take your time observing the rather small space as the door slams shut behind you, all that occupies the room is a rather clean toilet and a simple bed in the corner along with a window set into the opposite wall near the ceiling (and thus out of reach). With a light sigh you throw yourself on the bed, and try to find a comfortable position to wait out the investigation ...

You're not sure when you actually managed to fall asleep, but before you know it you're awoken by the sound of gunfire and screaming which causes you to jump out of the bed before staring up at the window in the wall. From the small section of sky you can see it's clear that something has moved into the space above the camp as the AA tracer fire tears through the air above towards faint black shadows that you can't really tell anything from as they fly through the sky above. It doesn't take long before the door to your cell is slung open, and the Captain who locked you in here storms in with full combat gear on,

"I would congratulate you on being cleared of all charges, but we have a few bigger problems at the moment. Ever since that explosion occurred we've lost contact with all branches of the UNSF outside of the few posts we set up throughout Midwestern America after establishing this camp, and even those outposts have become hard to get in touch with as something seems to be interfering with everything from long-distance radio to sat phones. On top of that we've got a host of creatures that look like the monsters from a damn b-movie horror film, roughly ten minutes ago our base has come under the assault from a force made up of large bat .... Dear god, I feel like this entire thing is like one of Carl's damned bad jokes ...

Our base is under siege from a force made up of large humanoid bats wielding primitive weapons made of solid metal; spears, axes, and hell I even saw one of the damn things throw a disc that embedded itself in a man's head. I hate to disappoint your desire for a break, but it looks like today we've got to fight for our damned lives, and hope whatever the hell these things are die quick."

With that the Captain reaches behind him, and a soldier passes him a loaded L85A2 with two mags,

"Now I'm going to give you a choice, something I'm only doing because that crazy bastard Carl seems to like you, and while he's annoying as hell I trust his opinion. The defensive setup on the west side of camp has come under the heaviest assault, last count we got was several hundred hostiles had engaged the roughly one hundred defenders, and I'm taking fifty men to reinforce them under the Major's orders. I need two more men, Carl is one and he suggested you for the last, so are you in? If you aren't I don't need someone whose going to piss themselves when they should be covering my ass."

Give me a gun, sir. How about one that's made in America? I want to die holding an M4.

The Captain yells out into the main room,

"Hey, Branson get in here, and give your M4 to our last recruit. You're going to be manning a fifty anyway."

Shortly afterward, a tanned stick of a man walks into the room, and hands his gun over to you along with three magazines before nodding to the Captain.

"The Bradley is loaded, and ready to go when you are, sir."

"Then let's get going. Private, you're going to be with Carl in Branson's unit, follow the orders you're given and try to keep your head on straight."

He says, before strolling out of the room alongside Branson. You follow after them quickly as you check the M4 over before stuffing the magazines into your combat webbing and falling in alongside a strangely happy looking Carl. When he notices your glance he simply nods, and leads you out of the jail into the central plaza where you find a convoy awaiting your and the Captain's arrival. It was made up of three M3 Bradley IFVs, five Humvees, and around twenty-five people who were spread out, either with their guns aimed towards the skies or finishing loading belts into the .50s on the Humvees.

You see the Captain talking to Branson and a brown-haired woman in an American military uniform who gives you a glance before turning her attention back to whatever orders the Captain was giving. It doesn't take long for Branson to run over to you and Carl to give out your orders,

"We're going to split off from the convoy and take our Humvee to the southwest checkpoint. Get in and make sure your weapons are ready."

With that Branson sprints over to a Humvee and quickly climbs into the turret as you and Carl clamber into the backseat. Immediately after Branson is in place you hear him fire off a burst on the .50 as two other soldiers climb in. One of them is a bespectacled medic and the other is the woman you'd seen a moment ago, and she takes the driver's seat. Without skipping a beat the woman puts the Humvee in gear and pulls away from the convoy. She begins heading towards one of the the smaller roads leading away from the plaza.

As you drive down the road you see soldiers moving in and out of the buildings along it, a number of them taking positions on roofs or in alleyways between prefabricated fortifications to fire up at the hostile bats swooping down towards the camp. You flinch as a bat swoops down and plunges a spear into a dismounted rifleman's chest before Branson fires a burst after it, cutting it in two and misting the windows with black blood.

Amidst all of the chaos you arrive at the checkpoint to find a swarm of the bat monstrosities assaulting a group of four soldiers that are holding onto a fortified post as best they can. Of the four soldiers one is lying against a building clutching the bleeding stump that used to be his arm while another is lying in the middle of the road with a sword stabbed into his stomach firing his pistol point-blank into his attacker's face. Branson yells for the driver to halt and orders you all to dismount as he starts to open up on the bats flying towards the post. As you climb out you take a look at the fortified post, a three-sided sandbag structure with a sheet metal roof, beside which one of the friendlies lies unconscious clutching onto his bleeding stump of an arm next to an unmanned .50 caliber.

Man the .50 cal. If it's out of ammo, then fire at hostiles with the M4.

Now that we've talked them into giving us a gun, rather than stay here and possibly get killed by bats, why don't we make up a convenient excuse to get away from the battle and obtain permission to try to evacuate the wounded guys using a humvee?

While Carl and the female soldier open fire at some bats closing on the humvee you quickly holler to Branson,

"Corporal, I would like permission to use the humvee to evacuate the two wounded soldiers, sir!"

Branson remains silent as first as he focuses on whatever he's set in his sights before you hear the fifty roar to life followed shortly by the sound of something heavy, but soft crashing to the ground signalling the death of at least one of the bats. As he starts to change his focus to another target he finally replies,

"Keep your head focused on the fight Private, let the 7 tons coming up handle the medevac. You go cover the medic, and Carl go man that damned Fifty before these bastards decide to all land on top of us!"

You yell an affirmative to Branson before sighing under your breath, begrudgingly you leave the cover of the humvee door and focus on the air above the medic who is currently tending to the soldier with the sword sticking from his stomach. However, before you can even react another bat swoops down and jams it's spear through the medic's spine plunging it straight through the now twitching medic's corpse. At the same time as the medic dies Carl sprints out from the cover of the HMMV to head for the .50 caliber while another of the bats swoops down towards him, and off to the side you notice a sword wielding bat land to strike at the female soldier ...

"Hey lady, look out!"

You yell as you pull your M4 up and fire off a hurried trio of shots at the bat flying towards Carl, and much to your amazement all three shots fine their way into the damned beast's head causing it suddenly go limp mid-air. From the woman's direction you hear a few shots followed by a pained scream, but as you turn to try and cover her after dispatching Carl's attacker you find her stabbing a knife into one of the monster's eyes as she ignores the sword stabbed into her leg. You rush up and shove the bat corpse away from the driver before raising your rifle to fire up at bats swarming above, and the sound of a second fifty opening up gives you some semblance of comfort.

However, before you can get to comfortable you hear the sudden sound of metal screeching along with a slight tugging sensation on your cheek that sends chills up your spine. Looking over your shoulder you find a metal disc stuck into the side of the humvee door leading you to duck down as you try, and get a grasp of the situation. What awaits you is the sight of a second metal disc that flies into the guard outpost and outright takes the head off one of the soldiers, and without a partner to cover his back the second soldier is unable to notice a spear wielding bat drop to the ground behind him.

Much to your amazement the soldier lying under the dead medic snaps his arm up and fires off five rounds that slam straight into the bat's back filling its chest with holes. Your attention is brought back to the immediate area when you hear a grunt of pain followed by someone crashing to the floor inside the HMMWV and you look to find Branson trying to stop blood flowing from his shoulder where one of those damned discs is sunk in a few inches.

I thought about suggesting that we roll under the HMMWV and hide, but we have a rifle and if something attacks us we'll have a hard time defending ourselves.

Sprint over to Carl and watch his back.

You watch Branson grit his teeth before deciding to ignore the disc as he lurches back onto his feet and drunkenly hauls himself back onto the fifty caliber. Seeing the Corporal isn't at risk of dying any time soon you bring your gun up and rush across the street snapping shots off as you try to get in a good position to cover Carl. You hear a disc go whistling past you to smash into the road behind you followed by the sound of a pistol firing as the soldier in the middle of the street manages to kill the bat who had attacked you with eerily precise accuracy.

When you get into cover behind some sandbags near Carl's position you're able to watch the combined fire from him and Branson tear apart six of the damn bats, and you manage to burst the head of a sword wielding bat that attempted to take of Carl's. It's not long before you suddenly hear the sound of horns blaring in the distance which causes the bats above you to pause before flying away as fast as their damned black wings can carry them. You're even more relieved when you hear a truck making its way down the road towards you and turn to find a 7 ton making its way toward the post with several medics clambering around inside seemingly taking care of something.

When it stops and the medics finally start to load wounded onto the truck you collapse onto the ground to lean up against the sandbags as Carl takes a cigarette from his pocket, and lights it up.

"This day hasn't been the picture of sanity has it? For some reason this hasn't been all that bad. Not sure its even thrown me all that much, but that's a given since I'm the veteran of the two of us isn't it rookie? What do you think it is rookie?"
