People always ignore natural experiments in economics.  ALWAYS.
To be fair, it's pretty hard to point at anything that isn't a natural experiment in economics, so I guess people have gotten desensitized to that sort of thing.

I suspect disenfranchising the elderly probably won't go over well, especially considering that the human lifespan continues to go on for longer and longer. Considering the already-existing consequences of such an early retirement age in the US, made back when it was normal... yeah, let's try not to peg a cap on something like that, shall we?

Life expectancy has not outpaced the retirement age for people most dependent on social security...  The retirement age is actually growing faster then life expectancy for the poor and the poor are getting less benefits.

We've got a world with China rising, Russia rearming, and America on the wane. We're looking at a real war within two decades unless something out of left field occurs.

China is rising?  I think it's a bit premature to say that their economic slowdown will lead to widescale strife.
Russia is rearming?  Is this a reference to the old Soviet joke about how the last car in a military parade is the staff of the economic ministry because their destructive power is so fearful?

You are saying that to a wrong person. I am not very "democratic" (read not a liberal) and don't think that everyone should have same set of rights.
...why not?

EDIT: I mean this, the only reason I can think of is 'I don't like their opinions'
In fact... Sure... Why not?

You say that no universal suffrage is tyrannical.

OK, then ask me two questions:

Is UK tyrannical toward 16-18 year old that got no chance to vote? Results would be different and 16 years voting limit is rather common in the world.

Is UK tyrannical toward non-citizen residents who live in UK for years? Why can't they vote? Aren't they human beings who deserve same rights? I guess Brits just dislike their opinions!

You're right UR, the choice is between abolishing citizenship and voting age, or taking the vote away from everyone who disagrees with you

America and NATO are on the precipice of losing technological overwatch against Russia and China. The PAK and J20 5th generation fighters are going to be damn close to the F22 at a significantly smaller price, plus they haven't shuttered the production lines.

The A3 is going to be the king of the tanks, but the Abrams is still a platform older than I am. Russians and Chinese get super great discounts in everything they do because the US pumps money into R&D, then the developments always sink into other's knowledge bases.

Yeah, we still have the greatest logistic expertise, Navy, and special operations apparatus in the world, but those won't last forever, especially if Pax Americana ends with a war against one or the other. After the US wins, we get to ape post WW2 England and watch the country that wasn't totally invested rise up top.

My god. The other day I heard someone say that the new divide is between authoritarian and libertarian, rather than right and left. It struck me as apt then, but after thinking on it, that is almost insanely accurate. Practically overnight we've undergone a total paradigm shift from the 20th century model to something wholly new, rapidly enough that a lot of people haven't really caught up to it yet. That's exactly what's going on here, with Brexit being supported by both political wings for reasons which, while different in the specifics, all tend to relate in some way to avoiding international tyranny and restoring personal and national liberty. Goodness knows the thought of the international corporate-capitalist system crumbling is enough to get me wet.

I can't say I hate it, either. I'd much rather deal with people with political views that I strongly oppose but who can be reasoned and compromised with, and who support free speech, personal liberties, and the democratic ideal as much as I do, rather than the opposite.

I don't see any wing of politicians being particularly libertarian in any way but lip service. I am, however, Amerocentric, so I have pretty specific opinions about what libertarianism entails.

Yeah, sorry. Not libertarian in the modern alt-right-only American sense, more the general. Surprisingly, Wikipedia actually does a decent job of giving a general breakdown. The core uniting factor is a primary concern with personal liberty, nothing more or less.

There's also the option that the people are mentally ill and incapable of rational decision making. Pretty sure most nations don't allow the clinically insane to vote.
But where does political dissident end and clinically insane start? 'Insane asylum' has more than once been used as a euphemism for political prison camp.

I wonder what the next round of constitutions will look like. Current ones went great length to curtail military dictatorships, I wonder if the next will focus on media control.

So you're saying we're going to have Trump elected, collapse the US, become part of the MLE1, supplying our military tech which proves a devastating combination with their inherent politeness ("Oh, sorry about blowing that up, really, here, why don't you come by for a beer later and we'll watch some slappypuckchasers?") and is only slowed down by the sheer absurdity of wing after wing of vodka powered SU-50 fighters.

There were problems with all the bears sneaking in to drink the vodka but that was handled in a brilliant move by Putin convincing them to drive tanks.

The FSW2 was brief and bloody, but finally managed to secure the enormous deposits within the Former Republic of Londonistan, and the ceasefire was negotiated on the condition that kilt-flashing be added to the Geneva Convention after the Edinburgh Atrocities.

Its not like internet "regulation" isn't already a thing governments around the world are desperately trying to put out.
