The best one is with another youtuber called "LethalFeline" where he guides Lethal through an unarmed build to the end. Much punching of ancient vampires and doors abound.[/url]
It really is something special. Some of the magic grinding\dungeon misery videos are probably better listened to in the background though.  (Also, Jesus the first video has 48.000 views. I remember watching it when it first came out!)

My choice would be Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. All of the people I knew loathed it for being a big departure from its traditional RPG predecessors. The biggest "sins" were with the "D-Gauge" system, a limited resource that slowly trickles away and could never be recovered; if it reaches its limit, it's an instant game over. Unlike in the previous games, dragon transformations greatly consumed from this "D-Gauge", and as such, made it very painful to use in the long term. That the hero was only limited to one  dragon form didn't help matters for them either. Other gripes included very small character count (only 3 playable, 1 other temporarily), a drastic setting change (bleak, underground themed magi-steampunk instead of a more traditional fantasy setting), limited exploration (linear, winding paths through a looong dungeon instead of an open world), and ramped up difficulty (very few permanent save points, and no rest or recovery spots along with few ways to heal without items).

Honestly, I couldn't understand why they hated these changes as much as they did. As I saw it, the D-Gauge and limited health recovery methods added a strategic challenge through attrition, giving an appreciable sense of urgency to the story itself. This, along with a more mobile combat (more TTRPG than traditional RPG) and an actual fondness for dismal, hopeless settings allowed me to look well past those other percieved "flaws" above.

I just thought of another one: Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth.
It's unabashedly Civ 5 IN SPACE, and that's what I love about it. I also really liked the fact that units morph based on what technological focus you go down (up to 6 different skins w/ the expansion!)

Daggerfall. No one likes it, as no one was alive when it was released. I still love it, and I think it really deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. I can't be objective about this, as I played it in seventh grade after a friend gave me the strategy guide, which was literally a book full of code - the game's code. So they told you what the algorithm was for (say...) pickpocketing, etc. Fell in love.

Aurora. As with most games that I like, the majority of gamers take a look and say "DUUUUURRRRR TOO HARD/GAAAAARRRRRRP NO GRAPHIX", etc. I think it has a special place in gaming, much like DF does with it's own genre.

Hey, I loved Daggerfall when I was 7 and had no idea what the fuck I was doing. I tried it again a couple years back, had fun for a bit but never stuck with it to beat it.

As for Aurora, I really should give that a shot again. I tried it a few years back, but I didn't have the time to figure out exactly what the hell I was doing, so I was just typing in numbers and clicking buttons and just not having any fun. It's a game I really want to figure out, but I've never had the time and motivation to do so.

I thought the only people who hated that game were the ones who get motion sick. Really though Mirror's Edge was groundbreaking. It was unique at the time and led to other first-person games implementing interesting platforming in their gameplay. Games like Brink and Titanfall.

I'm one of those people who ultimately didn't like it, but not because it made me motion sick. I disliked it because people wouldn't stop talking about it. Yeah, the platforming was neat. It didn't hold up the game for me though. After getting frustrated on a few levels trying to figure out what the developers meant to happen, I eventually gave up on it. Not because I couldn't finish it, I got to the parts with the guns. I just realized the whole game was going to be me going 'is this not a valid place to go?" and being told NO. I'm not a platformers kind of guy in the end, and while I appreciated the technical novelty, as a game I didn't find it fun. I saw a bare bones tech demo with really good marketing. It kind of shows to this day as the protagonist is still referred to as an example of the strong female player character, and people still remember dat blue sky and glass and chrome.

I feel the same way about ME that I do about Shadow of the Colossus. A popular title, with for its day sporting technical wizardry, that I did not board the hype train for even after playing it. I saw a lot of atmosphere in both of them but very little game and at that age, I found the emphasis on style over substance to be really annoying. It's probably why the dozens and dozens of indie platformers today get no more than a glance from me. I see a big heavy art style and some platforming puzzles and go "meh. Give me something crunchy to play."

I guess SoC deserves its own entry here.

Brief update on Runescape, I played 2007scape on oldschool.runescape.com. I am having way more fun than I thought I would, even before I hooked up with an IRL friend and started playing cooperatively.

100% agreed there. ME1 was great for introducing the setting and a bunch of great characters, but it wasn't until 2 that much of it began to shine.

I'll give you guys that ME2 and 3 had nice shootytimes improvements (with the major exception of "we decided to upgrade from infinite ammo to finite ammo")
But they absolutely RUINED everything else.
EVERYTHING.

Oblivion. But, save your giggles for later - I think I will release a paper or some such on the subject one day, since the ridiculous amount of hate this game received goes actually way beyond the videogame field and gets a bit meta. The mental gymnastics used in the process are quite interesting.

You don't need to write a dissertation on why people hate Oblivion. You can sum it up in just a couple words: "It wasn't Morrowind."

That would be one bullet point, sure. However, this is more of a Fallout 3 territory.

I know that feel. It's kind of what's been pushing me away from Undertale.

Really? People talking about Undertale made me wonder about getting it, until someone linked me a YouTube link to one of the boss OSTs. I instantly went on steam and bought it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm not going to push it on anyone or anything. Let's just say I.....had a good time.

The whole "Indie 8bit NES RPG quirky with unique story like Earthboudn!!!!1!" hype machine turned me off to Undertale before I'd even seen it. Plenty of indie games are quirky 8bit NES 4th-wall-breaking games, and the vast majority are one-trick ponies at best. The "like Earthbound" bit especially turned me off, because a game claiming to be "like Earthbound" essentially means that the developer realizes that Earthbound is popular and is trying to cash in on its cult fame, like the wave of "Doom clones" and "Quake killers" that came out following those games' release.

Or maybe the developer is intimately familiar with Earthbound and it's a big inspiration for their work as a game designer. Assume the worst, though, and you'll never be disappointed.

I've never actually played Earthbound, due to my non-existance when it was released, but I thouroughly enjoyed Undertale.
