Aliens: CM was a passable FPS as far as those go. Shame about the fact that it wasn't a good Aliens game, was buggy as hell and that its marketing outright lied.

Otherwise a pretty decent FPS, nothing to see here.

I'm gunna be THAT guy and say Runescape, or at least until my main got banned for macroing on a date that I can prove I was playing it. I never touch macros or cheats in general.
It'd be OK if I were allowed to appeal, but Jagex's policy on the matter is 'You were banned. Feel free to make another account because we don't allow ban appeals'

I do have other accounts, it's just that that one I had been playing since I was about ten and damn the nostalgia.

Ugh the "we can't make mistakes" attitude is so pathetic when it comes to ban appeals.

I only played runescape for a while when it was just new and it was fine back then. No idea why anyone would pay ~60$ a year for it though.

I used to really like Runescape. At the time it was literally the only MMO I'd played, I didn't even realize that there were other games like it in existence. I used to love exploring the tiny free-play world, fantasizing about members-only stuff, chatting with whoever had a moment, throwing "parties" at that inn in Varrock and the party house in Falador, and spending literal hours begging people to help me with the Draynor Manor switch puzzle.

Nowadays it's just... so different. It's modernized a lot, there's a voice-acted tutorial and everything. Even when I go to bootleg RS2007 servers, it's just not the same.

It was kinda hilarious for my level 40-ish character to be stuck in the tutorial instance last time I logged on, though.

EDIT: WAIT WHAT YOU *HAVE* TO INSTALL RUNESCAPE NOW?

I REMEMBER WHEN THE LAUNCHER WAS A TOTALLY-UNSUPPORTED OPTIONAL CONVENIENCE THAT NOBODY USED OR KNEW ABOUT

STRRAAAAAAAAANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENIN TO ME

Obligatory (and surprisingly absent) Dwarf Fortress mention. I mean, there's people who frequent the forums don't even play the game anymore. And I can't tell you how many times I've actually been asked if I'm reading the matrix.

Hitman: Absolution. They definitely hit their peak with Blood Money, there's no denying that, but I really enjoyed playing Absolution. It gets even better once you just skip all the cutscenes and ignore story. I'm kind of disappoint in the direction the series is going in though, but that's a discussion for another thread.

I remember getting a lot of enjoyment out of Heroes of Might and Magic 5 ... But at least it wasn't Heroes 4, amirite? Eh?

I really enjoyed Heroes of Might and Magic 4 when it came out :P

I really like Diablo 1. Nobody else seems to like it since Diablo 2 introduced the never-ending battle.net loot grind, uninteresting combat and turned a possibly interesting setting into just another generic dark fantasy world

I wonder if it's an age thing. I think most people who are Diablo fans who were old enough to enjoy 1 when it came out have an appreciation for it because it was a really great game for its time. I know I certainly have a soft spot for the first game!

I like Final Fantasy 13. And yes, I've played other Final Fantasy games, and I liked those too, but I've honestly never got the hate for 13. Sure it's not open world. Neither was 10 and people liked that. The only major complaint off the top of my head is the whole "party leader dies, game over even if you have 99 Phoenix Downs", and I've played other games with that that are popular.

Huh. What I've heard as the major complaint for FF13 (besides the linearity) is the story and poor writing. Like how they split up the party for 50%+ of the game into three or more groups, jumping between them after several hours of gameplay so you have trouble following what is going on. Plus the characters that people liked the least or thought were annoying got the most screentime, which made the story even more of a drag.

...

Okay, that wasn't meant to be such a rant. The point I was trying to make is that FF13's story was terrible and marred with unlikable characters, which compounded with the linearity to highlight its flaws. This is in contrast to the combat system which was actually good but not enough to carry an JRPG of its length. Which is why FF13-2 was better because it's story wasn't as terrible (though equally stupid) and had some gameplay refinements too. And then of course FF13-3 ditched all of that in favour of doing its own thing with questionable results. Both in terms of gameplay and story.

What's worse is that the story isn't even an entertaining train wreck a-la FF10.

Speaking of that, I loved FF10. Yes, it's stupid, entirely silly, with hammy voice acting and cringe turned up to 11. AND I LOVE IT.

WOW

I am amazed at the sheer amount of games in these lists that are "Popular at the time" that people have grown to dislike.

"popular at the time" usually means "under the influence of Hype".

Sometimes, the reverse happens and a game that was seen as run of the mill, generic or even bad at its release develops a cult following in later years when its subject matter becomes less common (e.g. Wolfenstein 2009)

Watch_Dogs

It has its failures, sure, but I actually thoroughly enjoyed playing through it. It also had a really cool multiplayer gimmick in its hide-and-seek "invasion" online mode that could have been amazing were not everyone a walking arsenal at all times. In fact, I think the game could have been a classic if they had just not made you a GTA protagonist and instead limited you to small guns. It would have made extended shootouts with police impossible and given the game a more low-key feeling.

Watch_Dogs

Honestly... Watch_Dogs I'll give it props.

In that the major issue with the entire story of Watch_Dogs is it thinks Aiden is a good guy, in spite kind of being a despicable person.

Yeah, he's definitely not a good person by any means. I get the impression that someone went "hey, no one wants to play as an evil guy, why don't we make him more of a hero?" somewhere along the line. There's this huge disconnect between you gunning down police and the public supposedly loving you for beating up the occasional mugger, for example.

There's this old-ish PC game called Urban Chaos (no, not the ps2 riot police game, an old pc game) in which you play as a black female cop fighting a losing battle against a rising crime wave in some city, and there's this weird partly mystical conspiracy involved in it or some sort, and she eventualy gets the aid of some sort of super hobo.

Anyway, the game has a nice combat system. You can use different guns and stuff, but the main part of the gameplay involve hand to hand combat, disabling and handcuffing people. When you get to play as the super robo, you get to strangle them instead of handcuffing, which is oddly fun :v! There's also a fair bit of exploration and stealth sections involved. You can climb on top of builds, drive cars around, arrest civilians for shits and giggles, etc.

People didn't seem to like it so much at the time it was released, but I liked playing it. Pretty nice game for its time, kind of a proto 3d grand theft auto thing.

There's also this one game called Street Wars, in which you manage some sort of real state company empire, and try to expand your influence over a certain area of the city and beat your competitors through all manners of underhanded means. You can literally corrupt the police, hire hooligans to break shit on your opponents turf, hire mafia assassins, thieves to steal stuff from enemies and all sorts of cool stuff. Got kinda challenging as you advanced, too. It also has a... Interesting art style and a fair bit of dark comedy involved. I might try to look it up on GoG.

The bit about "super hobos" made me remember another game I hugely enjoyed...well, at first.

Indigo Prophecy, aka Fahrenheit in most of the world. Okay, so the last few chapters were pretty bad, but Younger Sirus friggin loved that game. He loved the QTEs, the way you moved the control sticks to mimic on-screen actions, the bizarre story, the focus on the characters' mental health rather than their physical. Fighting some pretty bad depression at the time probably helped endear me to it.

I'm older and possibly a tinier bit wiser now and I still sometimes get nostalgic over it.

Dudes, HOMM4 was actually pretty good, at least in hindsight.
It was very unpolished, especially on the audiovisual end, but I loved some of its gameplay concepts that were sadly never expanded upon in future titles.
And the music was the absolute bomb. I dare say it was better than HOMM3's.
It's not my favorite game in the series, no, not by a long shot, but it really had potential to be very good. :v
