...Does that sort of thing even exist? As far as I'm aware, Katawa Shoujo takes place in the present day.

They've been around since 200X at least.  I think.  WIRED did a review on some.
They might have trouble with stairs but yes, definitely.
The reason to need one, however, is the real problem.

Unless they have severe newstuffallergyitis...

I'm just going to note that, when choosing disabilities, keep in mind the playability of the characters. Can you play them, and will you have fun playing them, should be things to ask.

I do see your point. It's for being there when you can't be.
But then, if your character couldn't be at the school, why not just find a different one they could be at?

What if they're severely allergic to {Set of things that are not their house or specifically set up to resemble their house}?  They can't go to any school.  And their parents are Far Too Busy People or something.

That's a thing, although it's not that severe in the case I know of.

ATH, no no nopity no no no.  Just a severe allergy can be mitigated.  It'd need to be a severe and all-encompassing allergy.
