I hear it often - I have submitted papers to journals and they required single space after period.  Mostly work related stuff, where I'm like... seriously just clean it with a formatter.

Plus if you do any type of actual engineering or technical writing, you probably come across it.

I've seen posts about it on LinkedIn; on sites related to web design (and browsers don't even care, they let you type with the extra space but don't render it anyway - I KNOW I put in two spaces in this post and in preview it eats them, best of both worlds), and the above mentioned journal.

- - -

Regarding insurance - interesting, I've never had anything of mine get denied. Closest I've come is my son got hurt at school on the playground because he was goofing off, and the insurance company keeps sending me questionnaires related to subrogation. I don't see why the school's insurance would need to pay for him falling when he was hanging upside down (it wasn't broken playground equipment or anything).  Also it's not like they are going to refund the $1000s I had to spend out of pocket even if it they get the school to pay for it.

I still maintain that a primary reason health care is expensive is because of insurance - public or private. The reason is if you can use "money from all the people" to pay for care for "some of the people", then of course the prices are going to rise.  It also doesn't help that insurance is tied not to statistically rare events but what is effectively a statistical certainty; "insurance" doesn't work well in those situations.

Maybe we need to ask AI how to have a system that minimizes individual financial risk of a health event without resulting in massive regulatory capture and monopoly power in the health care industry. I've thought about it from an engineering perspective and haven't been able to come up with anything - probably because it involves people and social structures rather than laws of physics.

My boss wanted me to help him destroy expired food because corporate ordered it cut open and trashed. To keep homeless people from seeking it. Obviously I refused, because I'm not going to help endanger anyone desperate enough to eat expired food out of the dumpster; if they can't get it from charity they're going to try to eat it anyway. It should be illegal to intentionally poison or expose food as far as I'm concerned.

I've worked at a foodbank before. When I disposed of food to keep homeless people from seeking it, it was in terms dealing with expired meat. We would poison it and then lock it in a special heavily fortified dumpster with the biohazard symbol on it.

It was done for their own protection. Meat doesn't have an expiration date, we throw it out because we physically see/smell it rotting. When you're desperate enough though, you may not care and try to eat it anyway and poison yourself. So now we have a dumpster that looks like a raccoon went through it and a dead homeless guy. It's better to just avoid that whole mess.

Then again, we were a food bank. We already did an above-average amount of work feeding the homeless so it's forgivable if we may have restricted ourselves in this one instance. You could never say that we didn't care.

Obviously we're disposing of spoiled meats and dairy properly, but they want us to destroy unopened/undamaged dry goods; cereal, crackers, oatmeal that sort of thing. Not even if we can tell its molded, but all of it all the time. Nothing's getting donated right now, either, even though supposedly other stores do, and we've been open for more than a year.

The forum certainly doesn't eat it up on posting - I can see there are two spaces after your sentences in that post.

The program I use to download youtube videos just stopped working, which really sucks because I've been using it for years and I can't up date it due to the update not working on my computer. At least I was able to find a replacement program after several hours of searching.

The one I went with is called Media Downloader (LINK) which is a GUI front end for the command line yt-dlp program. I went that rather than the plane yt-dlp because the command line is intimidating and I was worried about fucking stuff up if I typed the wrong thing into it.

Freetube also does an acceptable job of downloading videos, though its primary purpose is just to view youtube with added features + no ads. I use it for downloading short shitposts

Just a followup to this after using it for a few days, it can't do youtube shorts even if you change short in the URL to watch?v=, and that after getting used to how it works it does download just as fast as the old one except that there a few more steps in getting them to download.

I was supposed to get started on some uni work today, and I didn't.

Goddamn executive dysfunction, I don't know if it's ADHD causing it or some anxiety/minor trauma causing a maladaptive response. I need a therapist and/or medication regardless.

It does get to be a bit disheartening when "today was not the day" turns into "this week was not the week" or "this month was not the month" and more... Dealing with some of that myself, and for something I personally elected to do in the first place.

the time will pass anyways, tomorrow comes regardless, second best time to plant a tree is now, etc etc.
